Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test the properties of the well-known three-dimensional adjustment scale, established by Black et al. (1988, 1989), namely, its dimensionality and internal consistency. The theoretical basis of the construct is discussed in relation to formative and reflective measurement approaches. Design/methodology/approach – Two different ways of organizing the adjustment items (random/non-random) were used to assess the internal consistency of the three-dimensional adjustment scale. The quantitative analysis presented is based on survey data from 468 assigned expatriates in Asia that were subjected to an exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis as well as a structural equation modeling – more specifically the multiple indicators multiple causes model (MIMIC). Findings – The study revealed that the adjustment construct is possibly misspecified, especially the general adjustment dimension, that was tested as a formative, not a reflective scale. There is further evidence that the wrong measurement approach skewed the coefficient that connects adjustment to performance, which is the key construct in its nomological network. Moreover, the dimensionality and the internal consistency of the scale are deteriorated to a large extent by randomization of the items. The findings highlight the need for a clear concept definition that would lead to an appropriate operationalization of the construct. Originality/value – The study is one of the few rigorously testing the properties of a construct that has been used for almost 30 years, thus yielding some novel conclusions about its stability and consistency.

Security is multidimensional in nature and diverse in practice. This diversity leads to difficulty in providing a single all-encompassing definition for the many applied domains of security. Security cannot be considered singular in concept definition, as definition is dependent on applied context. Security incorporates diverse and multi-disciplined actors, originating and practicing across many disciplines. This multidimensional nature of security results unclear understanding of a definition for the concept of security. Bridging the gap between the traditional definitions of science and the undefined definition of what is Security can be achieved through Scientific Security Research methodologies that will be engaged and implemented in the exploration, analysis and conclusions of the systematic and organized body of knowledge.

The papers which follow in this special focus on lifelong learning are based on presentations at the First Global Conference on Lifelong Learning, held in Rome on 30 November–2 December 1994. In this introductory paper, Norman Longworth discusses the concept, definition and practice of lifelong learning and assesses why its importance and significance for the future are increasingly appreciated and stressed. He also sets out and discusses the main themes of the Rome conference, and analyses their implications and challenges specifically for business and higher education. Finally he describes the roles of the European Lifelong Learning Initiative (ELU), which organized the Rome conference, and the World Initiative on Lifelong Learning (WILL), which was established at the conference.

Faced with increasing budget constraints and a need to conserve the B-52 weapon system, the Strategic Air Command has pursued several avenues to make continuation training programs more efficient. Because actual flight training is considered to be critical, one proposed solution involved the use of a low cost business jet to supplement reduced B-52 flying schedules. This jet would be augmented to provide training for the radar navigator, navigator, and electronic warfare officer in addition to the pilot and copilot. Some training missions would be flown in this Companion Trainer Aircraft (CTA) to reduce the need to fly the B-52. This paper describes two efforts concerning training effectiveness of a possible CTA. First, a theoretical approach based on transfer of training considerations was used to predict the training potential of the CTA. Second, because the transfer expectations for the pilot and copilot were particularly difficult to specify, a study was designed involving operational SAC crews. This study employed a modified T-39B to supplement B-52 training for eight aircrews from the 2nd Bombardment Wing, Barksdale Air Force Base, LA. Although the CTA program was cancelled and the test was terminated early, crew responses to the program and problems encountered provide valuable lessons for any future CTA program.

O presente artigo tem por objetivo discutir numa perspectiva contemporânea os conteúdos de Lógica, Matemática, Filosofia da Matemática e História da Matemática presentes no livro A Lógica na Matemática, escrito por Malba Tahan. Para isso, mediante o uso da historiografia, foram selecionados temas concernentes com os assuntos da pesquisa. Foram tratados os seguintes temas: a base lógica da Matemática, a definição de conceito, os princípios para se definir um objeto, as definições e a natureza dos axiomas em Matemática, o método axiomático e as diversas axiomáticas para a geometria euclidiana, a estrutura lógica de um sistema dedutivo, os métodos de demonstração em Matemática, a indução, analogia e dedução em Matemática.   Palavras-chave: Lógica Matemática; História da Matemática; Filosofia da Matemática.   A TOUR BY THE LABYRINTH OF MATHEMATICAL LOGIC IN THE COMPANY OF MALBA TAHAN   Abstract   In this paper we discuss the Mathematics, the Logic of Mathematics, the Philosophy and History of Mathematics that presents in the book A Lógica na Matemática of the Malba Tahan, in a contemporary approach. For that, we use the historiography to select matters in adherence with the research. Are treated this topics: the basis of the Logic of Mathematics; the concept definition; principles to define an object; definitions and nature of the axioms in Mathematics; the axiomatic method and the diverse axiomatic to the Euclidean Geometry; the logical structure of a deductive system; demonstration methods in mathematics; the induction, analogy and deduction in mathematics.
