A search in the literature reveals that the use of fuzzy inference system (FIS) in criterion-referenced assessment (CRA) is not new. However, literature describing how an FIS-based CRA can be implemented in practice is scarce. Besides, for an FIS-based CRA, a large set of fuzzy rules is required and it is a rigorous work in obtaining a full set of rules. The aim of this chapter is to propose an FIS-based CRA procedure that incorporated with a rule selection and a similarity reasoning technique, i.e., analogical reasoning (AR) technique, as a solution for this problem. AR considers an antecedent with an unknown consequent as an observation, and it deduces a conclusion (as a prediction of the consequent) for the observation based on the incomplete fuzzy rule base. A case study conducted in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak is further reported.

Failure mode analysis formechatronics systems has many problems in real applications in terms of excessivedependency on experience, lack of uniform description and tedious analysis work. In order to increaseits effectiveness, an automatic failure modes analysis framework is constructedand an extended fuzzy cognitive map is used as a reasoning technique toanalysis the effect of the failures. A function-failure correlation model witha standard description is adopted to describe the relationship between failuremodes and functions, so that designers and engineers from different fields cancomprehend and communicate within the same framework. Functional flows andfailure modes are defined as basic concepts in the fuzzy cognitive map, whichprovides an easy way to carry out an automatic cause and effect reasoning.

Gamification can be viewed as a process design which encapsulates competition, achievements, status and self-expression. Gamification is used as a tool for improving physical fitness. In this chapter the physical activity using treadmill walking is considered. Calorie burn calculation plays a vital role in the gamification design. In treadmill calorie burn calculation, traditional and fuzzy based methods are compared for effective gamification. In the traditional calorie burn calculation method different equations are used for different incline levels. In the fuzzy logic method fuzzy reasoning technique is applied to calculate the calorie burn for different incline levels. It is identified that fuzzy based calorie calculation enhances physical activity and supports Gamification. Fuzzy based calorie burn calculation methods produces approximate values and supports the players to choose higher incline levels instead of lower incline levels and thereby burning more calories.
