This investigation reports the experimental and theoretical results carried out to evaluate the axial dispersion number for an air-water system in a novel hybrid rotating and reciprocating perforated plate bubble column for single phase and two phase flow conditions. Axial dispersion studies are carried out using stimulus response technique. Sodium hydroxide solution is used as the tracer. Effects of superficial liquid velocity, agitation level and superficial gas velocity on axial dispersion number were analyzed and found to be significant. For the single phase (water) flow condition, it is found that the main variables affecting the axial dispersion number are the agitation level and superficial liquid velocity. When compared to the agitation level, the effect of superficial liquid velocity on axial dispersion number is more predominant. The increase in superficial liquid velocity decreases the axial dispersion number. The same trend is shown by agitation level but the effect is less. The rotational movement of the perforated plates enhances the radial mixing in the section; hence, axial dispersion number is reduced. For the two phase flow condition, the increase in superficial liquid velocity decreases the axial dispersion number, as reported in the single phase flow condition. The increase in agitation level decreases the axial dispersion number, but this decreasing trend is non-linear. An increase in superficial gas velocity increases the axial dispersion number. Correlations have been developed for axial dispersion number for single phase and two phase flow conditions. The correlation values are found to concur with the experimental values.

A tandem arrangement of double rotating cascades and single diffuser cascade, proposed as a centrifugal pump with high performance in air-water two-phase flow condition, yields lower head due to the smallness of the impeller outlet in comparison with a impeller with large outlet diameter and no diffuser. Influences of impeller diameter change and installation of diffuser blades on two-phase flow performance were experimentally investigated under the case of the same volute casing. As the result, the similarity law of the diameter of impeller having the similar blade geometry and the rotational speed is satisfied even in two-phase flow condition. Comparing pump performances between a large impeller without diffuser blades and a small one with diffuser blades, higher two-phase flow performance is obtained by controlling the rotational speed of a small impeller with diffuser blades in the range of small water flow rates, while a large impeller with no diffuser gives high performance in the range of high water flow rate and small air flow rate.

The gas-liquid two-phase flow exists widely in nature and in our daily life, to realize the phase flow does not separate online measurement has become an important subject in the study. Through CFD simulation experiment, the optimal structure of inner and outer tube differential pressure flowmeter prototype. Through the analysis of the experimental data, comparison of the classical theoretical models found high Chishlom prediction model error is minimum. Moisture the modified model, the relative error of measurement is better than in the range of experiment 5%.

CFD simulation and PIV test technology provide effective solution for revealing the complex flow of hydrodynamic coupling’s internal flow field. Some articles reported that the combination of CFD simulation and PIV test can be used for analyzing the internal flow field of coupling, and such analysis focuses on one-phase flow. However, most internal flow field of coupling are gas-fluid two-phase flow under the real operation conditions. In order to reflect the gas-fluid two-phase flow of coupling objectively, CFD three-dimensional numerical simulation is conducted under two typical operation conditions. In addition, modern two-dimensional PIV technology is used to test the two-phase flow. This method of combining experiments and simulation presents the characteristics of the flow field when charging ratios are different.

This paper concerns the model of a polydispersed bubble population in the frame of an ensemble averaged two-phase flow formulation. The ability of the moment density approach to represent bubble population size distribution within a multi-dimensional CFD code based on the two-fluid model is studied. Two different methods describing the polydispersion are presented: (i) a moment density method, developed at IRSN, to model the bubble size distribution function and (ii) a population balance method considering several different velocity fields of the gaseous phase. The first method is implemented in the Neptune_CFD code, whereas the second method is implemented in the CFD code ANSYS/CFX. Both methods consider coalescence and breakup phenomena and momentum interphase transfers related to drag and lift forces. Air-water bubbly flows in a vertical pipe with obstacle of the TOPFLOW experiments series performed at FZD are then used as simulations test cases. The numerical results, obtained with Neptune_CFD and with ANSYS/CFX, allow attesting the validity of the approaches. Perspectives concerning the improvement of the models, their validation, as well as the extension of their applicability range are discussed.
