Abstract A Gram-negative, yellow-pigmented, rod-shaped bacterial strain YIM B02567 T was isolated from the root of Paris polyphylla Smith var. yunnanensis in China. Strain YIM B02567 T grew optimally at 25–30°C and at pH 7.0 in the absence of NaCl on nutrient agar. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain YIM B02567 T belong to the genus Chryseobacterium , and closely related to Chryseobacterium piperi CTM T and Chryseobacterium soli DSM 19298 T . Whole genome sequencing indicated that the genome size was 4,774,612 bp and had a DNA G+C content of 34.5 %. Values of the ANI and the dDDH between strain YIM B02567 T and its closely related Chryseobacterium species were below 81.72 % and 24.7 %. Strain YIM B02567 T contained menaquinone-6 as the sole isoprenoid quinone, anteiso-C 15:0, iso-C 17:1 ω 9 c and iso-C 17:0 3-OH as major fatty acids and phosphatidylethanolamine as major polar lipid. Based on the polyphasic analyses, strain YIM B02567 T could be differentiated genotypically and phenotypically from recognized species of the genus Chryseobacterium . The isolate therefore represents a novel species, for which the name Chryseobacterium paridis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM B02567 T (=CGMCC 1.18657 T =JCM 5426 T ).

A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, non-spore-forming bacterium, motile by means of single polar flagellum and rod-shaped, designated strain GR12-1T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in Yeongju region, Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that this strain is related to members of the genus Pseudoxanthomonas, showing sequence similarity values ranged from 92.3 to 96.2 %. This organism grew at 5–33 °C, with optimum growth at 28 °C. Strain GR12-1T grew optimally in the presence of 0–2 % NaCl. The whole-cell fatty acid profile included iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, iso-C16 : 0, iso-C11 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 0 as major components. The only isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone 8 (Q-8). The DNA G+C content was 63.4 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, genetic and phylogenetic data, strain GR12-1T should be classified as a member of a novel species of the genus Pseudoxanthomonas, for which the name Pseudoxanthomonas yeongjuensis sp. nov. is proposed, with strain GR12-1T (=KACC 11580T=DSM 18204T) as the type strain.

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile, psychrophilic bacterium, designated strain Cr6-08T, was isolated from alpine glacier cryoconite. Growth of strain Cr6-08T occurred at 1–25 °C. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain Cr6-08T is most closely related to members of the genus Arthrobacter. Strain Cr6-08T possessed chemotaxonomic properties consistent with those of the genus Arthrobacter, such as peptidoglycan type A3α (l-Lys–l-Ala4), MK-9(H2) as major menaquinone and anteiso- and iso-branched compounds (anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0) as major cellular fatty acids. The polar lipid profile contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, one unknown glycolipid and three unknown polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain Cr6-08T was 57.3 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, strain Cr6-08T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Arthrobacter, for which the name Arthrobacter cryoconiti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Cr6-08T ( = DSM 23324T  = LMG 26052T  = CGMCC 1.10698T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated CW-E 2T, was isolated from a polluted soil sample collected from Jiangsu Province, China. A taxonomic study of the isolate, including phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and phenotypic characteristics, was carried out. The predominant menaquinone was MK-6 and the major fatty acids were i-C15 : 0, i-C17 : 0 3-OH, i-C17 : 1 ω9c and summed feature 4. The G+C content of the DNA was 37.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain CW-E 2T represents a novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium for which the name Chryseobacterium flavum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CW-E 2T (=KCTC 12877T=CCTCC AB 206147T).

Three short spore chain-forming actinomycete strains were isolated from soil samples collected from subtropical islands in Japan. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of these strains contained meso-diaminopimelic acid (meso-A2pm), glutamic acid and alanine. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-9(H4), iso-C16 : 0 and 2-OH iso-C16 : 0 were the major cellular fatty acids and phosphatidylethanolamine was a component of the polar lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 67–69 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the novel strains consistently formed a monophyletic cluster with Amycolatopsis taiwanensis. On the basis this polyphasic taxonomical study, it is proposed that the two new isolates represent two novel species: Amycolatopsis helveola (type strain TT00-43T=NBRC 103394T=KCTC 19329T) and Amycolatopsis pigmentata (type strain TT99-32T=NBRC 103392T=KCTC 19330T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain KIS83-12T, was isolated from soil of Gaui island in the Taean region of South Korea. The strain grew at 15–33 °C (optimum, 28 °C), at pH 5.0–8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0). Growth did not occur in the presence of NaCl. The strain was catalase-negative and oxidase-positive. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that KIS83-12T was most closely related to Solimonas soli DCY12T (96.9 %), Solimonas variicoloris MN28T (96.5 %), Solimonas flava CW-KD 4T (96.5 %) and Solimonas aquatica NAA16T (96.0 %), and formed a robust phyletic lineage with members of the genus Solimonas . The main isoprenoid quinone was Q-8. Major polar lipids included phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. Fatty acids present in large and moderate amounts (>5.0 %) were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c), C16 : 0, C16 : 1ω5c, summed feature 2 (iso-C16 : 1 I and/or C14 : 0 3-OH) and C12 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 67.9 mol%. On the basis of the taxonomic data obtained in this study, KIS83-12T represents a novel species of the genus Solimonas , for which the name Solimonas terrae sp. nov. is proposed, with KIS83-12T ( = KACC 16967T = DSM 27281T) as the type strain.

A novel lactic acid-producing, Gram-stain-positive, catalase-negative and rod-shaped strain, designated as strain C06_No.73T, was isolated from a traditional Japanese fermented beverage called kôso. According to the results of phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain C06_No.73T belongs to the genus Lentilactobacillus . The closest type strain was Lentilactobacillus curieae CCTCC M 2011381T, with a sequence identity of 98.1 %. The identity values with other strains were all below 97 %. The isolate propagated under the conditions of 18–39 °C (optimum, 27 °C for 48 h incubation) and pH 4.0–7.0 (optimum, pH 6.5). The G+C content of its genomic DNA was determined to be 37.9 mol%. The main fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω7c, C18 : 1 ω9c and C19 : 0 cyclopropane 11,12. The major polar lipid was identified as phosphatidylglycerol. No isoprenoid quinone was detected. The predominant cell-wall amino acids were lysine, alanine, glutamic acid and aspartic acid. Neither meso-diaminopimelic acid nor ornithine were detected. On the basis of this polyphasic taxonomic study, the isolate is concluded to represent a novel species, for which the name Lentilactobacillus kosonis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is C06_No.73T (=NBRC 111893T=BCRC 81282T).

A non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain WPCB133T, was isolated from freshwater collected from the Woopo wetland (Republic of Korea). Cells were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The strain contained MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone. The DNA G+C content was 47 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WPCB133T forms an independent lineage within the genus Mucilaginibacter. Strain WPCB133T was distantly related to Mucilaginibacter kameinonensis SCKT (94.7 % sequence similarity), Mucilaginibacter paludis TPT56T (94.5 %) and Mucilaginibacter gracilis TPT18T (94.4 %). Phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain WPCB133T from members of the genus Mucilaginibacter. On the basis of evidence presented in this study, strain WPCB133T represents a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter rigui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WPCB133T (=KCTC 12534T =NBRC 101115T). An emended description of the genus Mucilaginibacter is also proposed.

A novel facultatively methylotrophic, Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain S2R03-9T, was isolated from jeotgal, a traditional Korean fermented seafood. The organism was strictly aerobic, motile by means of a single polar flagellum, non-sporulating and catalase- and oxidase-positive. Strain S2R03-9T grew in the presence of 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 6.0–10.0, with optimum growth in the absence of NaCl and at pH 7.0. It grew at temperatures in the range 20.0–30.0 °C, with optimum growth at 30 °C. Colonies grown on R2A medium were non-pigmented, opaque and creamy white. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that it was most closely related to Methylobacterium organophilum JCM 2833T (96.6 % similarity) and the phylogenetic similarities to all other Methylobacterium species with validly published names were less than 95.0 %. The DNA G+C content was 64.9 mol%. The phylogenetic analysis, the phenotypic assessment and the chemotaxonomic data (major ubiquinone, Q-10; major fatty acids, C18 : 1 and C18 : 0) showed that S2R03-9T represents a novel species within the genus Methylobacterium in the class Alphaproteobacteria, for which the name Methylobacterium jeotgali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S2R03-9T (=KCTC 12671T=LMG 23639T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped bacterial strain, CH15-1T, was isolated from a sediment sample taken from Daechung Reservoir, South Korea, during the late-blooming period of cyanobacteria. Strain CH15-1T grew optimally at pH 7.0 and 30 °C. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences confirmed that strain CH15-1T belongs to the genus Arenimonas with the similarity range from 92.6–97.4 % and is closely related to Arenimonas oryziterrae YC6267T (97.4 %), Arenimonas composti TR7-09T (95.4 %), Arenimonas metalli CF5-1T (94.7 %), Arenimonas malthae CC-JY-1T (94.6 %) and Arenimonas donghaensis HO3-R19T (92.6 %). However, the DNA–DNA hybridization between strain CH15-1T and the closest strain, Arenimonas oryziterrae YC6267T, was 8.9–12.9 %. The DNA G+C content was 63.9 mol% compared to A. oryziterrae YC626T, 65.8 mol%. Strain CH15-1T included Q-8 as the major ubiquinone and phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine as the major polar lipids. The major fatty acids (>5 %) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, iso-C14 : 0, iso-C11 : 0 3-OH, iso-C17 : 0 and summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1ω9c and/or C16 : 0 10-methyl). On the basis of phylogenetic, phenotypic and genetic data, strain CH15-1T was classified in the genus Arenimonas as a member of a novel species, for which the name Arenimonas daechungensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CH15-1T ( = KCTC 23553T = DSM 24763T).

A Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, yellow-pigmented bacterium, strain LQY-7T, was isolated from activated sludge treating synthetic pyrethroid-manufacturing wastewater. The taxonomic status of the strain was determined using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain LQY-7T was a member of the genus Flavobacterium but had low similarities with other species of this genus (95.0 % similarity with Flavobacterium indicum GPTSA100-9T and <94 % similarities with other Flavobacterium species). On the basis of phenotypic, genetic and phylogenetic data, strain LQY-7T should be classified as a representative of a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium haoranii sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is LQY-7T (=ACCC 05409T =KCTC 23008T).
