Three short spore chain-forming actinomycete strains were isolated from soil samples collected from subtropical islands in Japan. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of these strains contained meso-diaminopimelic acid (meso-A2pm), glutamic acid and alanine. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-9(H4), iso-C16 : 0 and 2-OH iso-C16 : 0 were the major cellular fatty acids and phosphatidylethanolamine was a component of the polar lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 67–69 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the novel strains consistently formed a monophyletic cluster with Amycolatopsis taiwanensis. On the basis this polyphasic taxonomical study, it is proposed that the two new isolates represent two novel species: Amycolatopsis helveola (type strain TT00-43T=NBRC 103394T=KCTC 19329T) and Amycolatopsis pigmentata (type strain TT99-32T=NBRC 103392T=KCTC 19330T).

Two strains of pink-coloured bacteria, 5516T-9T and 5516T-11T, were isolated from an air sample collected in Korea. The taxonomic status of these novel strains was investigated by means of a polyphasic approach. The novel strains were Gram-positive, aerobic, non-spore-forming and coccus-shaped bacteria. The DNA G+C contents of strains 5516T-9T and 5516T-11T were 61.0 and 59.3 mol%, respectively. The major isoprenoid quinone for both strains was MK-8. Strain 5516T-9T contained summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c), C16 : 0 and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, and strain 5516T-11T contained summed feature 3, iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, C17 : 1 ω8c and C15 : 1 ω6c as the major fatty acids (>10 %). The polar lipid patterns of both strains were similar, comprising one phospholipid and one aminophospholipid as the major components. Phylogenetic analyses using 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that both novel strains were affiliated to the genus Deinococcus. Strain 5516T-9T exhibited the highest sequence similarity with Deinococcus marmoris DSM 12784T (96.8 %) and strain 5516T-11T showed the highest sequence similarity with Deinococcus saxicola DSM 15974T (94.5 %). The sequence similarity between strains 5516T-9T and 5516T-11T was 94.7 %. On the basis of the data presented, it is evident that both strains represent separate novel species of the genus Deinococcus for which the names Deinococcus aerolatus sp. nov. (type strain 5516T-9T=KACC 12745T=JCM 15442T) and Deinococcus aerophilus sp. nov. (type strain 5516T-11T=KACC 12746T=JCM 15443T) are proposed.

Abstract A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile actinobacterium, designated strain YIM 93776T, was isolated from a saline sediment sample collected from Aiding Lake in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Northwest China. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain YIM 93776T was affiliated to the genus Glycomyces, and was closely related to Glycomyces albus TRM 49136T (97.6 % sequence similarity), Glycomyces lacisalsi XHU 5089T (97.0 %) and Glycomyces anabasis EGI 6500139T (96.2 %). The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid and the whole-cell hydrolysates sugars were galactose, mannose, arabinase, glucose and ribose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9 (H4) and MK-10 (H4). Diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, two phosphatidylglyceride, two unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified polar lipids were detected in the polar lipid extracts. Major fatty acids were anteiso-C17:0, iso-C15:0, iso-C16:0, anteiso-C15:0 and anteiso C17:1 A. The draft genome sequence of strain YIM 93776T was 5.37 Mbp in size with 69.5 mol% DNA G+C content. On the basis of morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic evidence, strain YIM 93776T therefore represents a novel species, for which the name Glycomyces salinus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM 93776T (= KCTC 49430T = CGMCC 4.7685T).

An aerobic, Gram-negative, non-motile, yellow-to-orange pigmented and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain SM1T, was isolated from seawater in Thailand and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the novel isolate shared 93–95 % sequence similarity with species of the genus Myroides. The DNA–DNA relatedness values of strain SM1T with Myroides odoratimimus JCM 7460T and Myroides odoratus JCM 7458T were below 70 %. The DNA G+C content of strain SM1T was 33.6 mol%, the major menaquinone was MK-6 and the major fatty acids were C15 : 0 iso, C17 : 1 ω9c iso and C17 : 0 iso 3-OH. Based on its phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain SM1T was classified as representing a novel species of the genus Myroides, for which the name Myroides pelagicus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SM1T (=IAM 15337T=KCTC 12661T).

The taxonomic position of a Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, facultatively anaerobic bacterial strain, CAU 9324T, isolated from a grassy sandbank was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain CAU 9324T grew optimally at 30 °C and pH 6.0. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol as the major component. The predominant cellular fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content of strain CAU 9324T was 48.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strain belonged to the genus Paenibacillus, showing <96.4 % similarity to the type strains of all recognized Paenibacillus species. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data, strain CAU 9324T was considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus puldeungensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 9324T (=KCTC 13718T =CCUG 59189T).

An actinomycete that developed sporangia containing four spores in a single row at the ends of short sporangiophores on branched aerial hyphae was isolated from subtropical forest soil. The isolate contained menaquinone MK-9(H4), glutamic acid, alanine and meso-diaminopimelic acid as cell-wall amino acids and madurose in the whole-cell hydrolysate. The 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the isolate formed a monophyletic cluster with Planotetraspora mira. On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, a novel species of the genus Planotetraspora is proposed, Planotetraspora silvatica sp. nov. (type strain, TT 00-51T=NBRC 100141T=DSM 44746T).

A Gram-negative-staining, obligately aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped and chemoheterotrophic bacterium, designated strain MN1-1006T, was isolated from an ascidian (sea squirt) sample, and was studied using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the new isolate shared approximately 93–99% sequence similarity with recognized species of the genus Rubritalea within the phylum ‘Verrucomicrobia’. DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain MN1-1006T and Rubritalea squalenifaciens HOact23T and Rubritalea sabuli YM29-052T were 57% and 14.5%, respectively. Strain MN1-1006T produced carotenoid compounds that rendered the cell biomass a reddish pink colour. The strain also contained squalene. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of the novel strain contained muramic acid and meso-diaminopimelic acid. The DNA G+C content of strain MN1-1006T was 51.4 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C14:0, iso-C16:0 and anteiso-C15:0. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-9. On the basis of these data, it was concluded that strain MN1-1006T represents a novel species of the genus Rubritalea, for which the name Rubritalea halochordaticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MN1-1006T ( = KCTC 23186T = NBRC 107102T).

An orange-pigmented, Gram-staining-negative, rod-shaped bacterium, designated 96_Hippo_TS_3/13T was isolated from the brood pouch of a diseased seahorse male of the species Hippocampus barbouri from the animal facility of the University of Giessen, Germany. Phylogenetic analyses based on the nearly full-length 16S rRNA gene sequence placed strain 96_Hippo_TS_3/13T into the monophyletic cluster of the genus Mesonia within the family Flavobacteriaceae. However, the strain shared only 92.2–93.8 % sequence similarity to type strains of species of the genus Mesonia, with highest sequence similarity to the type strain of Mesonia aquimarina. Cellular fatty acid analysis showed a Mesonia-typical fatty acid profile including several branched and hydroxyl fatty acids with highest amounts of iso-C15 : 0 (40.9 %) followed by iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (14.8 %). In the polyamine pattern, sym-homospermidine was predominant. The diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The quinone system contained exclusively menaquinone MK-6. The only identified compound in the polar lipid profile was phosphatidylethanolamine present in major amounts. Additionally, major amounts of an unidentified aminolipid and two unidentified lipids not containing a phosphate group, an amino group or a sugar residue were detected. The genomic G+C content of strain 96_Hippo_TS_3/13T was 30 mol%. Based on genotypic, chemotaxonomic and physiological characterizations we propose a novel species of the genus Mesonia, Mesonia hippocampi sp. nov., with strain 96_Hippo_TS_3/13T ( = CIP 110839T =  LMG 28572T = CCM 8557T) as the type strain. An emended description of the genus Mesonia is also provided.

Four strains isolated in the last 15 years were revealed to be identical in their 16S rRNA gene sequences to MCRO19, the sequence of which was deposited in GenBank in 1995. In a polyphasic analysis including phenotypic and genotypic features, the five strains (including MCRO19), which had been isolated in four European countries, turned out to represent a unique taxonomic entity. They are scotochromogenic slow growers and are genetically related to the group that included Mycobacterium simiae and 15 other species. The novel species Mycobacterium europaeum sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate these five strains. Strain FI-95228T ( = DSM 45397T  = CCUG 58464T) was chosen as the type strain. In addition, a thorough revision of the phenotypic and genotypic characters of the species related to M. simiae was conducted which leads us to suggest the denomination of the ‘Mycobacterium simiae complex’ for this group.

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, aerobic bacterium (FJAT-14571T) was isolated from a soil sample in Taiwan. Strain FJAT-14571T grew at 20–40 °C (optimum 35 °C), pH 6–10 (optimum pH 8) and 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain FJAT-14571T was a member of the genus Bacillus and was most closely related to Bacillus oceanisediminis DSM 24771T (96.2 %). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain FJAT-14571T and B. oceanisediminis DSM 24771T was low (32.0 % ± 0.88 %). The diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan of strain FJAT-14571T was meso-diaminopimelic acid and the predominant menaquinone was MK-7 (96.6 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (46.4 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (7.6 %), iso-C17 : 0 (8.2 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (10.0 %) and the DNA G+C content was 40.8 mol%. Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic properties clearly indicated that strain FJAT-14571T represents a novel species within the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus taiwanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FJAT-14571T ( = DSM 27845T = CGMCC1.1 2698T).

A novel actinobacterium, designated strain C4-31T, was isolated from soil collected from a cave. Cells were aerobic, Gram-reaction-positive, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive and non-motile cocci. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the organism occupied a distinct phylogenetic position within the suborder Frankineae, with sequence similarity values of less than 93.2 % to members of this suborder. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, an unknown aminophospholipid and an unknown phospholipid. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω6c and C16 : 0. The G+C content of the DNA was 62.8 mol%. On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic data as well as phylogenetic evidence, strain C4-31T ( = KCTC 39556T = DSM 100065T) is considered to represent the type strain of a novel species of a new genus in the suborder Frankineae, for which the name Antricoccus suffuscus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed.
