Anthers from more than 17000 flowers of 19 bell pepper Capsicum annuum L. hybrids (provided by `Semillas Fitó S.A.') were cultured in a double layer modified H medium (Nitsch and Nitsch, 1969) supplemented with 0.5 % activated charcoal and 0.26 % Gelrite in the solid phase. Significant differences between genotypes were observed on embryogenesis (472.3 to 9.7 embryos / 100 flowers) and number of plants rescued (4.0 to 0.3 plants / 100 flowers). Trying out maltose, malt extract, and sucrose. as carbohydrates, at 20, 40, 60 or 80 g/l, gave significantly better results for maltose (20 or 40 g/l). In addition, maintaining the anther cultures in an atmosphere enriched with 600 ppm CO2 was beneficial for embryo number, embryo development and number of rescued plants. Isocitrate dehydrogenase zymograms from leaf extracts indicate the microspore origin of the acclimated plants. Flow citometry of nuclei was used to determined an early diploidization of 70 % of the acclimated plants.

This study assessed the preservative efficacy of Azadirachta indica (Neem) and Psidium guajava (Guava) leaf extracts on Capsicum annuum (Bell pepper). The phytochemical compositions of A. indica and P. guajava leaf extracts were determined using standard methods. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of saponnin, anthraquinone tannin, steroid, terpenoid, flavonoid and glycosides in ethanol extracts of Azadirachta Indica A. Juss. and Psidium guajava L. leaves and tannin, terpenoid, flavonoid and glycosides are present in n-hexane extracts of the selected plants. Among the phytochemicals identified, Terpenoid was the highest in value (25.79mg/g) and saponnin has the least value (3.27 mg/g). The ethanolic extracts of Guava had the highest inhibition against the growth of Staphyloccoccus aureus (35.00±1.15 mm).The n-hexane extracts of Neem leaves had the lowest inhibition against the growth of Staphyloccoccus sp (8.00±0.57 mm). Ethanolic extract has the highest antifungal effect against Saccharomyces cerevisiae (58.66±0.90 mm). Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that the ethanol extracts of Azadirachta indica A. Juss. and Psidium guajava L. leaves are more effective than the n-hexane extracts of P. guajava and A. indica leaves because it effectively inhibited the growth of the microorganisms. The Capsicum annuum L. fruits coated with selected plant extracts were preserved for a longer period than the uncoated fruits. All these results therefore suggest that the leaf extracts of P. guajava and A. indica can be used as bio preservatives for the extension of the shelf life of C. annuum.

<em>Konsumsi cabai rawit terus meningkat namun produktivitasnya masih rendah, sehingga diperlukan pemuliaan yang mengarah pada perbaikan daya hasil. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis keragaman genetik, korelasi antar karakter, heritabilitas arti luas, dan nilai kemajuan seleksi populasi F3 cabai rawit. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Kebun Percobaan Leuwikopo, IPB, Dramaga, Bogor dan Laboratorium Genetika dan Pemuliaan Tanaman, Departemen Agronomi dan Hortikultura, IPB. Percobaan menggunakan 5 genotipe tetua dan 6 genotipe F3 cabai rawit, dengan genotipe tetua yang diulang sebanyak 3 ulangan dan genotipe F3 tanpa ulangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa karakter bobot buah per tanaman dan jumlah buah per tanaman memiliki keragaman genetik luas pada semua genotipe. Semua karakter pengamatan berkorelasi positif terhadap daya hasil kecuali umur berbunga dan umur panen. Nilai heritabilitas arti luas dengan kriteria tinggi terdapat pada karakter bobot buah per tanaman, bobot per buah, dan panjang buah. Hasil seleksi indeks yang dilakukan menunjukkan kemajuan seleksi yang besar pada karakter bobot buah per tanaman dan jumlah buah per tanaman.</em>
