Important supply bases for buyers are those that emphasize minority-owned businesses. The increased focus on globalization, corporate social responsibility, supplier diversity, and additional benefits has established a need for buyers to develop sustainable relationships with minority-owned firms. Based on a review of the literature, and interviews with a minority supplier director, minority suppliers, and a purchasing manager, this chapter examines the relationship constructs that are important to buyer-minority-owned supplier relationships. Trust, perception of buyer’s commitment, and minority-owned supplier commitment is explored. Research propositions, implications, and directions for further research are offered.

Diversity management has emerged as a unique agenda of today's corporations in the global economy. One important area of corporate diversity management is supplier diversity, which is an inclusive growth program designed to help develop under-represented businesses into competitive suppliers of corporations. A major challenge of supplier diversity is that many minority suppliers lack the capability to deliver products which the corporate buyers need. Another major challenge is that few minority suppliers have the ability to participate in the global markets opportunities. We address these two problems by proposing an innovative “Flying High, Landing Soft” platform for international education in supplier diversity to help multinationals manage their global supplier diversity.

The increased focus on globalization, corporate social responsibility, sustainability, supplier diversity and other socially responsible initiatives have made minority-owned businesses an important supply base for buyers. Moreover, this emphasis has established a need for buyers to develop long-term effective relationships with minority owned firms. Businesses seeking to increase their global supplier diversity need to understand the global challenges of defining “minority” and other critical relational issues in order to increase effectiveness. Based on a review of the literature, and interviews with a minority supplier director this chapter discusses these challenges and offers practical implications.

Supplier diversity programs were created in the United States nearly 50 years ago to encourage private sector companies to provide business opportunities to underutilized minority business enterprises. In order to assess the experiences that minority business enterprise CEOs have with large purchasing organizations and their perceptions of justice and commitment of large purchasing organizations to the buyer–supplier relationship (BSR), this study utilizes survey data collected from 206 minority business enterprise CEOs who supply large purchasing organizations that espouse a strong commitment to supplier diversity. The theoretical framework of organizational justice is utilized to establish testable hypotheses. The results from hierarchical linear regression show minority business enterprise CEOs’ perception of large purchasing organizations’ commitment to the BSR is positively related to the distributive and informational dimensions of organizational justice. Surprisingly, the procedural dimension was found to have a significantly negative relationship. This research also found a significant, negative relationship between minority firm CEOs’ perception of distributive and informational justice and their perceptions of unethical behavior by large purchasing organizations.
