Parents of children born with complex life-threatening chronic conditions (CLTCs) experience an uncertain trajectory that requires critical decision making. Along this trajectory, hope plays an influential but largely unexplored role; therefore, this qualitative descriptive study explores how parent and provider hope may influence decision making and care of a child born with CLTCs. A total of 193 interviews from 46 individuals (parents, nurses, physicians, and nurse practitioners) responsible for the care of 11 infants with complex congenital heart disease (CCHD) were analyzed to understand how hope features in experiences related to communication, relationships, and emotions that influence decision making. Overall, parental hope remained strong and played a pivotal role in parental decision making. Parents and professional healthcare providers expressed a range of emotions that appeared to be integrally linked to hope and affected decision making. Providers and parents brought their own judgments, perceptions, and measure of hope to relationships, when there was common ground for expressing, and having, hope, shared decision making was more productive and they developed more effective relationships and communication. Relationships between parents and providers were particularly influenced by and contributory to hope. Communication between parents and providers was also responsible for and responsive to hope.

This paper reports on the findings from a systematic review of parenting interventions used by social workers to support vulnerable children in the United Kingdom. The study focused on children from birth to 11 years and 11 months based on Munro's rationale for early intervention. From the 423 papers initially identified, twelve met the inclusion criteria for this review. Four common themes were identified: developing relationships, the effectiveness of parenting interventions, societal impact on families and health and psychological concerns. The importance of effective relationships between parents and social workers was identified as key to effective parental interventions but there was limited evidence of improved outcomes for children despite this. A common factor in the studies was the level of parental deprivation which in many cases was associated with a range of mental health issues frequently seen in association with drug and alcohol abuse and domestic violence. The review identified a number of successful outcomes across a range of parenting interventions. However, what was surprising was the limited input from the children themselves within this review. Applying our findings to practice, the authors recommend a number of ways to contribute to the development of parenting interventions.

This paper presents a mini-review of employability as a guiding outcome in veterinary education—its conceptualisation, utility, core elements and dimensions, and pedagogical approaches—through a summary of the findings of a major international project with the same aims (the VetSet2Go project). Guided by a conception of the successful veterinary professional as one capable of navigating and sustainably balancing the (sometimes competing) needs and expectations of multiple stakeholders, the project integrated multiple sources of evidence to derive an employability framework representing the dimensions and capabilities most important to veterinary professional success. This framework provides a useful complement to those based in narrower views of competency and professionalism. One notable difference is its added emphasis on broad success outcomes of satisfaction and sustainability as well as task-oriented efficacy, thus inserting “the self” as a major stakeholder and bringing attention to resilience and sustainable well-being. The framework contains 18 key capabilities consistently identified as important to employability in the veterinary context, aligned to five broad, overlapping domains: veterinary capabilities (task-oriented work performance), effective relationships (approaches to others), professional commitment (approaches to work and the broader professional “mission”), psychological resources (approaches to self), plus a central process of reflective self-awareness and identity formation. A summary of evidence supporting these is presented, as well as recommendations for situating, developing, and accessing these as learning outcomes within veterinary curricula. Though developed within the specific context of veterinarian transition-to-practise, this framework would be readily adaptable to other professions, particularly in other health disciplines.

Abstract Introduction Surgeons must establish and maintain effective relationships with patients and, where appropriate, with their supporters. Before surgery, surgeons should strive to have an honest and sensitive discussion with patients about their options for treatment that leads to informed and deliberate consent. The aim of this study is to compare our consent practice in the vascular department in Royal Stoke Teaching Hospital against consent guideline in the Best surgical practice and to if we are meeting patient satisfaction. Method A prospective study of 30 patients from 21/09/2020 to 21/10/2020. Questionnaire form was designed based on the best surgical practice guideline and was given to the patient to fill. We include patients admitted for elective vascular procedures, wide range ages. The questionnaire Results Most of the of the patient (90%) were consented by the professionals who provide the treatment. 63% of the patients asked for further information in the form pf leaflets or websites. 70% of them request to know the recent guidelines of their procedures. Only 13% of them had a copy of the consent prior to surgery. Recommendations We must provide the patients with further information, Recent guidelines, and a copy of the consent to take home prior to surgery day. This can be achieved by consenting them before the operation day.

In a world increasingly trying to erase past inequalities and discriminations, words must communicate intent as much as ideas. We live in politically correct cultures, where unspoken rules of respectability govern conduct in cross-cultural interactions, meaning interactions among people of different races, genders, or religions. Therefore, it is essential to use politically correct language to avoid offending the audience. Even if it is not intended, failing to do so can have devastating effects professionally and personally. As it is frequently seen in the media, writing or speaking without using politically correct or inclusive language can have a negative impact that proves impossible to take back, especially in today’s age of social media and online content sharing. Politically correct means expressing yourself using neutral, unbiased, and inoffensive language that does not degrade, demoralize, or discriminate against another person or group. Inclusive language considers all perspectives without exclusion, inferiority, or stereotyping. Conspicuous prejudice and discrimination in the workplace are far less acceptable today. Laws now protect traditionally underrepresented groups from flagrant discrimination in hiring and promotion, and political correctness has reset the standards for politeness and respect in people’s daily interactions. Yet, in spite of the progress mentioned, political correctness is an equivocal term. While it has helped many traditionally underrepresented employees to experience their workplace as more inclusive, the rules of political correctness can prevent employees from developing effective relationships across differences that might divide groups. The paper attempts to analyze the rise and enforcement of political correctness rules related to the ongoing economic processes in the new economy of the world. In this new economy, the organizational boundaries between states and firms become unclear and, apart from conceiving a new vocabulary able to express the changes the firms are undergoing, when speaking or writing, all members of the audience should be included and addressed using inclusive language.

The object of research is the process of substantiating design decisions for creating an image video at the pre-production stage. An insufficiently thought-out image video can cause a negative effect that is destructive for the image of the advertised subject. Therefore, every decision made when creating an image video at the pre-production stage must be substantiated on the basis of a multidimensional analysis. In this study, the content of the traditional stages of the pre-production stage has been improved by taking into account the specifics of the image video, as well as by using the questionnaire method:   the image of the advertised entity is considered as a system consisting of a set of specific qualitative characteristics of the relevant person or organization;   the main characteristics of the video being developed are determined by the results of a survey of the target audience. The result of the study was an improved methodology for substantiating design decisions for creating an image video, which features: 1) justification of the list of components of the customer's image that need to be advertised; 2) application of the questionnaire method to determine the main characteristics of the video being developed, such as: type of video, graphic style, color scheme, duration, prevailing ways of presenting information. The proposed methodology is concretized to substantiate decisions in the process of creating an image video of an educational program with a dual form of training. The components of the image of the educational program that need to be advertised in the video are determined based on the results of a survey of applicants and students. Expert assessment was carried out using the ranking method. When processing the results of the questionnaire, a difference was revealed in the judgments of different groups of respondents, which became the basis for setting the task of advertising several components of the image of the educational program. The use of the proposed methodology allows making more informed decisions regarding the content and form of an image video, which will contribute to the establishment of effective relationships between the advertised subject and its stakeholders.

The article discusses the history of the port's development and its relationship with the city. There has been analyzed the process of the port transformation into a separate structure, which specializes in cargo handling operations, as well as cargo storage, cargo consolidation and the provision of various services related to logistics. The relationship between the port and the city at all stages of their interaction is characterized. Methods of solving problems arising in the process of restructuring the urban and port territories at each historical stage of the development of the port and city are considered. There has been also noted the importance of the effective relationships between the port and the city in the process of their transformation and the need for their mutual influence at the current stage of economic development.

PurposeThe present study aimed to predict department heads' wisdom in Tehran universities based on their metacognitive beliefs and gender.Design/methodology/approachThe study employed a nonexperimental design. The statistical population consisted of all male and female heads of departments in Tehran universities, among whom 150 participants were selected using Morgan's table and via the random sampling method. The research instruments were the Meta-Cognitive Beliefs Questionnaire (Wells, 1997) and the Wisdom Scale (Schmit et al., 2012). The data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis and independent-samples t-test.FindingsThe total scores of male and female principals were significantly different in the two scales and some of their subscales. The metacognitive beliefs scale and its components were good and significant predictors of the principals' wisdom. Cognitive self-awareness was the best positive predictor, and positive beliefs about worries were the best negative predictor for their wisdom.Practical implicationsWise department heads are usually more empathetic, and this makes their decisions for the well-being and satisfaction of their colleagues as well as the students. Therefore, when faculty members are more satisfied and relaxed, they can do their teaching better and establish more effective relationships with their students. They should also be more motivated to do scientific research studies. Because wise managers are happier and more relaxed, they can focus more on solving educational problems in their department, and this, in turn, improves the educational quality of their department. The higher the quality of the university educational system, the less stress and the more mental health the students will have. Students in such educational environments are more focused on learning courses and gain better expertise. These students will provide more specialized services to the community in the future.Social implicationsWisdom is associated with better contributing to a happy life, and as a result, we have a healthier and more productive society.Originality/valueIt can be concluded that positive metacognitive knowledge, such as cognitive self-awareness via affecting the principals' mental awareness and regulating thoughts, and negative metacognitive experiences, such as worrying about the future, low meta memory and sensitive-obsessive control negatively affecting their affective and cognitive states, affect the principals' decisions and behaviors in educational settings. According to the results of this research, university presidents can hold workshops to increases metacognitive skills to their administrators and teachers. Also, the results of the present study can help the heads of university departments to establish more constructive and effective relationships with the faculty members and students by strengthening their metacognitive skills.

This article argues that the dominant culture perception of indigenous peoples remains intimately woven with dominant culture beliefs about the environment. Taber-Hamilton asserts that if the environment is viewed as expendable within a model of colonial consumerism, then indigenous peoples who inhabit colonized spaces are viewed as expendable, as part of the cooptation and exploitation of environmental resources. Taber-Hamilton provides case examples that emphasize the critical need for establishing collaborative partnerships with indigenous communities for effective environmental justice advocacy. Providing a perspective of Christian theology through the lens of the indigenous environmental context, Taber-Hamilton concludes with advances in relationships between the Episcopal Church and indigenous peoples. She advocates that effective relationships with indigenous communities require a decolonized Christian faith that restores the indigenous Jesus to the landscape of theological reflection, a restoration that benefits both faith-based environmental advocacy and the Church’s relationship with indigenous peoples.
