This paper is a invitation to interaction designers across disciplines to rethink the shaping of interaction “intra-actively”. Whether in human-computer interaction design or interdisciplinary and interactive performance practices, we propose to shift the emphasis from interaction between things, towards the intra-active processes of differentiation by which such things are continually made and unmade. Expanding interaction design by engaging in processes intended to bring awareness to the value systems involved in the local production of “interaction” and “things that interact” offers an opportunity to treat these values, and likewise the designers (be it engineers or choreographers or composers), as objects themselves in the design process. In the traditions of feminist, new materialist, and process philosophy we weave a narrative of appropriated perspectives in order to dismantle hegemonic accounts of correlationism and representationalism in interaction design, while investigating the concepts of boundary objects, diffraction, and critical appropriation as potential approaches to intra-active design.

Traditional courseware is lack of humanity. Proposes to use Agent technology achieve the humanized design in courseware. Microsoft Agent with its lively and clear human features has had a significant influence upon traditional human-computer interaction. This paper introduces the related technologies of Microsoft Agent, and discussed the realization of the principles and the design process of the Microsoft Agent in authorware . The paper gives the Agent script design structure, the human feedback of humanized courseware and the notes in the process. Microsoft Agent enhanced the expression and presentation effect of courseware by lively images of anthropomorphic expression, speech and action.

AbstractNovel shape-changing interfaces promise to provide a rich haptic experience for human-computer interaction. As a specific instance of shape-changing interfaces, Elastic Displays provide large interaction surfaces that can be temporally deformed using force-touch. The unique property of these displays is that they automatically return to their initial flat state. Recently, several review and position papers have stimulated a discussion towards consolidating the knowledge about shape-changing interfaces. The knowledge about Elastic Displays is similarly scattered across multiple publications from recent years. This paper contributes a task taxonomy based on productive uses of Elastic Displays found in literature, on the web, and in our interaction lab. This taxonomy emphasizes tasks, but also encompasses general aspects regarding content types, visualization technology, and interaction styles. All aspects of the taxonomy are illustrated using case studies from literature.

This symposium addresses the challenge of translating user data to specifications suitable for interface development. Four methodologies will be presented: Decision requirements tables, ecological interface design, object-view and interaction design and procedural networks. These four methodologies will be contrasted relative to three dimensions: (1) type of data used in analysis, (2) point in the design process at which each methodology focuses its impact and (3) the formalisms each uses for translating psychological data into engineering data suitable for specification development. Our introductory remarks will elaborate on these three dimensions, and present an example design problem. The four session participants then will present their respective methodologies, how each addresses the three dimensions and how each can be used to address the example design problem.

ZusammenfassungDieser Beitrag beschreibt die modellbasierte Gestaltung der Mensch-Computer-Interaktion an militärischen Arbeitsplätzen zur Luftlagebewertung. Die Interaktion wird zunächst allgemein anhand eines erweiterten Semiotischen Modells auf vier Ebenen (pragmatisch, semantisch, syntaktisch und physikalisch) charakterisiert. Daraus werden die entsprechenden Ges-taltungsbereiche abgeleitet und kurz beschrieben. Als exemplarische Umsetzung wird dann anhand eines Prototyps die Gestaltung einer Benutzungsschnittstelle für die Luftlagebewertung dargestellt.
