Abstract Information about the ecotoxicological impacts of surface waters that receive discharges from legacy mines is valuable to infer the ecological impacts on natural environment for managing mine discharges. In this study, we investigated behavioural and reproductive responses of two cladoceran species Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia magna to water samples collected from metal-contaminated and reference rivers near legacy mines in Japan. The toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) of water samples that caused D. magna immobility was conducted to evaluate the key metals causing acute toxicity. The results of our water quality assessment performed using two cladoceran species demonstrated modest to significant adverse effects on their behaviour and reproduction, suggesting the potential for ecotoxicological impacts on natural populations and communities at several contaminated sites that received mine drainage. The results of TIE of water samples that caused D. magna immobility indicated likely contributions of Zn and Cu. These results imply that effect-based water quality assessments such as ours can provide direct and unique evidence of the ecotoxicological impacts of metals in river waters, which will be useful for better understanding and predicting the ecological effects of these metals in the natural environment.

The parameters such as temperature, PH, TSS, TDS, ammonia, phenol, cyanide, sulfide, oil and grease, chloride, DO, COD and BOD were taken to assess the water quality of Sirsiya river, central southern Nepal. Water samples were collected from upstream to downstream from the point receiving industrial effluent to Sirsiya river. It receives wastewater burden of more than 250 industries along Bara/Parsa industrial corridor. All the parameters except oil and grease were found within the generic standard. The study revealed that the physic-chemical characteristic of the river water was changing as a result of the discharge of untreated effluents from different industries. This may impact on water quality of Sirsiya river and also pose human health problems. Thirty six dug well water samples from different houses along three transects and four Buriganga river water samples from four different Ghats (boat terminals) of the Old Dhaka of Bangladesh were collected during dry and wet periods for water quality assessment. The depth of these dug wells varies from 3.4 to 16 m with an average depth of 10 m with diurnal variations. The hydrochemical classification shows that the dug well and Buriganga river water samples are Ca-HC03 type. More than 50% dug well water samples were contaminated as concentration levels of Ca, K and Fe in both periods were high whereas over 25% Buriganga river water samples were tainted as concentration levels of Ca, Mg, Fe and Mn in dry season exceeded the drinking water quality standard limits of World Health Organization (WHO), Department of Environment (DOE) and United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). If the dug well water is protected from contamination, the shallow groundwater in this part of Dhaka city should be an alternative perennial source of water especially during the dry season when water scarcity looms large Asiat. The quality assessment of the aquatic environment from some freshwater resources situated in Bucharest and Ilfov County - Romania has been performed in an extended study and data obtained will be presented in several papers. This first paper presents a case study on water quality assessment of the Mogosoaia, Herastrau and Pantelimon Lakes, lakes built on the Colentina River. Two water and sediment sampling campaigns were conducted in the summer and autumn 2016, 29 specific parameters were determined for water samples and heavy metals content for sediment samples. The obtained results for water samples allowed the classification of lakes water in quality classes and the heavy metals values for sediments were compared to the standards of chemical quality, according to the national legislation M.O. 161/2006. Furthermore, for an overview of water quality, the Water Quality Index (WQI) method was used, where the indicators were grouped into two categories: the first category took into account 18 quality parameters (WQI-1) and the second considered heavy metals content (WQI-2).

The water quality assessment of Arges River and its tributary Dambovita River is presented in this paper as second part of an extended study on the evaluation of some freshwater resources quality located in Bucharest and surrounding areas [1]. This case study was carried out mainly for the water in the confluence area of Arges and Dambovita rivers, where a water and sediment sampling campaign was organized in June 2018. 21 quality parameters were determined for water samples and for the sediment samples the heavy metals content was evaluated. The results of the water samples analysis allowed the framing in quality classes, and for sediment samples the values obtained were compared with the chemical quality standards for sediments, according to the current national regulations. Following the assessment, it was established that the freshwaters in both Arge� River and Dambovita River, downstream the confluence with the Dambovita River are loaded with different pollutants, such as organic substances and nutrients leading to a lower water quality classification.

Based on water sampling of the upper reaches of the Syr River and its tributaries from the parts of Aral Sea Basin in Kyrgyzstan, the chemical compositions of river waters were systematically analyzed for revealing the hydrochemical characteristics and evaluating the water quality. Research indicates that there are some differences in ion concentration between the low-flow season (LFS) and high-flow season (HFS), but the hydrochemical classification reflected that all water samples fall in the calcium bicarbonate category, except that only three samples fall in the not dominant category during the LFS. The water quality classification shows that the water samples fall in the excellent to good categories for irrigation use. The analysis shows that the main ions of river waters come from the weathering of rocks, and the dissolution of carbonates is higher than that of silicates. Human activities have had an impact on the waterbody, especially inferred from the indicators of NH4-N and fecal coliform (FC). FC groups were detected in some rivers, in which the detection rate at the high-water level increased. The contents of potentially toxic elements are lower than international drinking water standards, but there are clustering differences between the LFS and HFS. There may be anthropogenic intrusions of Cu, Pb, and Zn during the LFS period and of Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd during the HFS period. The results fill the gaps in the study of the hydrochemical composition and water quality assessment in the Aral Sea Basin and will also provide a basis for water resource management and for the study of water quality evolution in the future.
