Abstract Background Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a relatively rare mesenchymal tumor that mainly affects adults. Its prognosis is good after curative resection, but distant recurrences after 10 years or longer have been reported. Recurrent SFT usually arises as a local lesion; distant metastasis is rarely reported. Here, we report lung metastases that recurred a decade after excising a retroperitoneal primary SFT. Case presentation A 44-year-old woman had an SFT resected from her right retroperitoneum at our hospital. Ten years later, at age 54, she underwent a lung resection after CT showed three suspected metastases in her left lung. All three were histologically diagnosed as lung metastases from the retroperitoneal SFT. However, whereas the primary SFT had 1–2 mitotic cells/10 high power fields (HPF), the metastatic lesion increased malignancy, at 50/10 HPF. Conclusion Patients who have had resected SFTs should be carefully followed up, as malignancy may change in distant metastasis, as in this case.

A medullary carcinoma of the thyroid in a dog first became evident because of a distant metastasis. The histologic characteristics of the tumor differ from those previously reported in dogs in that this tumor was highly malignant; anaplasia and mitotic figures were common. The diagnosis was substantiated by radioimmunoassay for calcitonin. Serotonin and 5-hydroxytryptophan also were elevated in the neoplastic tissue. The relation of the biochemical alterations to the clinical course was not clear.

A case is presented of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of the gluteal region with metastasis to the lung appearing 7 years after wide excision of the primary lesion. The world literature is reviewed. The clinical and pathologic features of dermatofibrosarcoma are reviewed and treatment is discussed, with the aim of emphasizing the need for long-term follow-up examination of lymph nodes and for metastases following wide excision of these lesions.

Background. A case report of a nonhealing ulcer of the tongue histologically proven to be adenocarcinoma.Method. A 92-year-old man underwent clinical, immunochemistry, and imaging investigation.Results. Tests confirmed a distant metastasis of a primary colorectal carcinoma.Conclusion. Metastasis from colorectal carcinoma to the oral cavity is primarily to bone, but non-healing ulcers of the oral cavity should be considered in differential diagnoses.
