The temperature and magnetic field dependences of electron spin resonance was investigated for a graphite / polystyrene composite. The obtained value for the g-factor does not depend on temperature and is equal to 2.003, which is close to the value for a free electron for carbon (g = 2.0022-2.0035). This behavior of the g-factor excludes the possibility of an internal magnetic field in the composite.

Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) has been used to investigate the electrochemical and photolytic behaviour of particulate C.I. Pigment Red 122. Heterogeneous electrochemical reduction and oxidation of the pigment resulted in different reversible ESR signals with the radical cation giving a signal of ΔHpp = 2.3 G and g-factor of 2.0033 and the radical anion giving ΔHpp = 3.2 G and g-factor 2.0039. On exposure to light the inherent ESR signal, which was determined to be a two-component signal, increased in intensity by a factor of 2.4 but did not change in linewidth or g-factor. This light-induced signal was reversible and decayed to initial levels in the dark. The mechanism of these reactions is discussed. Keywords: ESR, pigment, electrochemistry, photo effects.

Several ferrocenylalkyl- and aryl ketyls were generated and their e.s.r. spectra were recorded. Pentadeuterio-benzoylferrocene and benzoyl perdeuterioferrocene were synthesized. Analysis of the e.s.r. spectra of their corresponding ketyls enabled the determination of the hyperfine splitting constants of benzoylferrocene ketyl, and allowed an assignment of the electron densities at various positions in the molecule.A comparison of the magnitudes of the g-values for the ketyls derived from benzophenone (2.0034), benzoylferrocene (2.0062), and 2,2-dimethylpropanoylferrocene (2.0126), combined with the proton hyperfine splittings, gave some insight into the nature of the interaction of the free electron with the ferrocene system.
