OPNET is a network simulation tool which can simulate various elements in a network. It is able to analyze traffics and even can simulate security events recently. System designers can identify vulnerabilities or find an efficient algorithm/protocol that could reduce costs if simulations are performed prior to actual implementation/construction of a large-scale system. Thus, this chapter includes the method of simulating a PLC-system, designing a PLC-based vertical fish farm and an expandable simulation test bed with which students or researchers will be able simulate their implementation methods. With these methods, it will be possible to perform large-scale simulations.

Gamma-ray shielding parameter for some concretes and dosimeters having large scale applications in radiological protection are presented using MCNPX (version 2.4.0) at different energies. The MCNPX results are compared with experimental, MCNP and XCOM data, and good agreement is being noted. Present study indicates that MCNPX simulation method is suitable and reliable simulation tool to be used as an alternative method for the investigation of gamma-ray interaction. The present geometry can be used as standard geometry for MCNPX simulation for low- as well as high-Z materials.

Background: The evolution of distributed web-based applications and cloud computing has brought about the demand to store a large amount of big data in distributed databases. Such efficient systems offer excessive availability and scalability to users. The new type of database resolves many new challenges especially in large-scale and high concurrency applications which are not present in the relational database. NoSQL refers to non-relational databases that are different from the Relational Database Management System. Objective: NoSQL has many features over traditional databases such as high scalability, distributed computing, lower cost, schema flexibility, semi or un-semi structural data and no complex relationship. Method: NoSQL databases are “BASE” Systems. The BASE (Basically Available, Soft state, Eventual consistency), formulates the CAP theorem the properties of which are used by BASE System. The distributed computer system cannot guarantee all of the following three properties at the same time that is consistency, availability and partition tolerance. Results: As progressively sharp big data is saved in NoSQL databases, it is essential to preserve higher security measures to ensure safe and trusted communication across the network. In this patent, we describe the security of NoSQL database against intruders which is growing rapidly. Conclusion: This patent also defines probably the most prominent NoSQL databases and describes their security aspects and problems.

Since the traditional four-step model is so simple that it cannot solve complex modern transportation problems, microsimulation is gradually applied for transportation planning and some researches indicate that it is more compatible and realistic. In this paper, a framework of agent-based simulation of travel behavior is proposed, which is realized by MATSim, a simulation tool developed for large-scale agent-based simulation. MATSim is currently developed and some of its models are under training, so a detailed introduction of simulation structure and preparation of input data will be presented. In practice, the preparation process differs from one to another in different simulation projects because the available data for simulation is various. Thus, a simulation of travel behavior under a condition of limited available survey data will be studied based on MATSim; furthermore, a medium-sized city in China will be taken as an example to check whether agent-based simulation of travel behavior can be successfully applied in China.

A simulation tool is developed to make a comprehensive techno-economic and environmental assessment of a case study under different scenarios. Different capacity of solar and storage technologies are considered. The model calculates the levelized cost of electricity, the autonomy level and the CO2 emissions. We demonstrate that the economic profitability of solar and battery system is in very good agreement with HOMER and the autonomy level is validated by using a simulation tool created by SI-REN. We show that combining solar PVwith battery system doesn't bring additional autonomy to the model for Geneva considering the present market prices for batteries and seasonal changes in solar energy potential. The validated tool is then extended to include the thermal demand and generation by adding heat pumps and solar thermal. The availability of thermal storage at a large scale and the generation over a neighbourhood are shown to increase the autonomy of the neighbourhood. Finally, multiple scenarios are also run by changing the input parameters to perform a sensitivity analysis of these parameters on the performance of the model. Under the assumptions of the model, to foster investments in solar PV and battery installations, falling investments costs seem necessary for the future.
