Enhanced oil recovery in mature fields can be implemented using chemical flooding with the addition of surfactants using surfactant-polymer (SP) or alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding. Chemical flooding design is implemented taking into account reservoir conditions and composition of reservoir fluids. The surfactant in the oil-displacing formulation allows changing the rock wettability, reducing the interfacial tension, increasing the capillary number, and forming an oil emulsion, which provides a significant increase in the efficiency of oil displacement. The article is devoted with a comprehensive study of the formed emulsion phase as a stage of laboratory selection of surfactant for SP or ASP composition. In this work, the influence of aqueous phase salinity level and the surfactant concentration in the displacing solution on the characteristics of the resulting emulsion was studied. It was shown that, according to the characteristics of the emulsion, it is possible to determine the area of optimal salinity and the range of surfactant concentrations that provide increased oil displacement. The data received show the possibility of predicting the area of effectiveness of ASP and SP formulations based on the characteristics of the resulting emulsion.

AbstractTwo field-collected strains of Culex quinquefasciatus Say, collected 50 km apart in Havana City, Cuba, were both resistant to malathion and propoxur, while one population also showed low level resistance to temephos. Laboratory selection of the latter population with malathion for 22 generations increased the malathion resistance 1050-fold, temephos resistance 24-fold and propoxur resistance 453-fold compared to the standard laboratory susceptible strain. Synergist studies and biochemical tests indicated that two mechanisms, an elevated esterase and an insensitive acetylcholinesterase, were operative in these strains. The esterase mechanism conferred resistance to malathion, but not to temephos or propoxur. The acetylcholinesterase mechanism increased the level of malathion resistance and extended the cross-resistance spectrum to temephos and propoxur.

AbstractGastrointestinal nematode infections, including Haemonchus contortus, are one of the main causes of economic losses to ovine farmers worldwide. In order to contribute to the control of nematode infections and avoid parasite spreading we generated divergent resistant and susceptible sheep breeds and evaluated the adaptive immunity of these animals developed upon experimental infection against H. contortus. The selection of resistant or susceptible animals from the Corriedale Breed has been based on Expected Progeny Differences for faecal egg counts per gram. Furthermore, animals from the resistant Corriedale line were inseminated with imported semen from Australian Rylington Merino rams. Thus, the objective of this work was to analyze the adaptive immune response in both susceptible and resistant obtained lambs. Our results indicate that there is a potent parasite-specific local and systemic immune response in resistant animals and that although susceptible lambs can produce high levels of IgA antibodies during the infection, their antibody response is delayed which, together with an impaired specific-Th2 response, does not contribute to initial parasite elimination. Our results shed light into the immune mechanisms that mediate resistance to H. contortus and could constitute important assets to sheep farmers, not only as a means to detect resistance, but also to enhance the efficiency of selection in stud flocks.
