Pulp and paper processes frequently present nonlinear behavior, which means that process dynam-ics change with the operating points. These nonlinearities can challenge process control. PID controllers are the most popular controllers because they are simple and robust. However, a fixed set of PID tuning parameters is gen-erally not sufficient to optimize control of the process. Problems related to nonlinearities such as sluggish or oscilla-tory response can arise in different operating regions. Gain scheduling is a potential solution. In processes with mul-tiple control objectives, the control strategy must further evaluate loop interactions to decide on the pairing of manipulated and controlled variables that minimize the effect of such interactions and hence, optimize controller’s performance and stability. Using the CADSIM Plus™ commercial simulation software, we developed a Jacobian sim-ulation module that enables automatic bumps on the manipulated variables to calculate process gains at different operating points. These gains can be used in controller tuning. The module also enables the control system designer to evaluate loop interactions in a multivariable control system by calculating the Relative Gain Array (RGA) matrix, of which the Jacobian is an essential part.

Tip clearance has a great effect on the flow and pressure fluctuation characteristics in a multiphase pump, especially at multiple operating points. The phase distribution and pressure fluctuation in tip clearance in a multiphase pump are revealed using the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) technology and high-speed photography methods. In this paper, the phase distribution, the gas-liquid two-phase velocity slip, and the pressure fluctuation intensity are comprehensively analyzed. Results show with the increase of the tip clearance, the multiphase pump pressurization performance is obviously deteriorated. In the meantime, the gas accumulation mainly occurs at the hub, the blade suction side (SS), and the tip clearance, and the maximum gas-liquid two-phase velocity difference is near the impeller streamwise of 0.4. In addition, the tip clearance improves the gas-liquid two-phase distribution in the pump, that is, the larger the tip clearance is, the more uniform the gas-liquid distribution becomes. Furthermore, the gas leads to the maximum pressure fluctuation intensity in the tip clearance which is closer to the tip leakage flow (TLF) outlet, and has a greater effect on the degree of flow separation in the tip clearance.

In this paper, a rotordynamic experiment on a compressor rotor system is presented and the feasibility of gas foil bearings with inhomogeneous bump foils is verified. A push–pull device is designed to obtain the stiffness curve and the nominal clearance of foil bearings. Operating points and dynamic coefficients of the rotor system at each rotating speed are predicted. In rotordynamic analysis, an alternative model of the impeller is proposed and the critical speed is predicted by employing the finite element method, in which the dynamic coefficients of inhomogeneous foil bearings are taken into account. Compared with the experimental result, the accuracy of the prediction for the critical speed is verified to be about 14% error. Two sets of foil bearings with 22 and 41 μm nominal clearance are manufactured and tested. Test results indicate that the vibration amplitude can be greatly reduced by diminishing the bearing clearance. When foil bearings with 22 μm clearance are used, the high-order harmonic frequencies of rotor vibration are significantly inhibited, and the amplitude of the rotating frequency is obviously restricted. Thus, the foil bearing with inhomogeneous bump foils tested in this paper can meet the speed requirement of the compressor when the nominal clearance is set at 22 μm.
