We describe our experience of using anterior maxillary distraction for the correction of cleft related maxillary hypoplasia. Clear historical overview and meticulous description of the surgical technique are given. The technique is described step-by-step from the type of incision to the prosthetic rehabilitation. An advantage of anterior maxillary distraction over the other conventional techniques is reasoned. The paper is illustrated both the view of intra-oral tooth-borne screw appliance and four representative cases. This technique provides excellent well-predicted result and can be widely recommended in anterior maxillary distraction.

Cleft orthodontics generally poses a challenge and a missing premaxilla adds to the difficulty in managing them. The lack of bone support and anterior teeth in a case with missing premaxilla accounts not only for difficulty in rehabilitation but also in increasing the maxillary hypoplasia. This article presents a case report where planned orthodontic and surgical management using distraction has helped treat a severe maxillary hypoplasia in a patient with missing premaxilla. The treatment plan and method can be used to treat severe maxillary hypoplasia and yield reasonably acceptable results for such patients.

Education has long been an interest of foreign missionaries. Many criticisms have been raised over the promotion of imperialism in foreign missionary education. However, what is often overlooked is the positive mutual impact foreign educators have had on both their host and home societies. This article explores the influence of early educational missionaries in Korea and considers the “other truth” of the positive impact they had as advocates for Koreans during the Japanese colonial period. After a historical overview, the authors highlight missionary contributions to social justice and the restoration of Korean national spirit. They conclude with implications for today.
