Com o processo de autonomização das esferas de ação, que caracteriza os processos de modernização, o pensamento social católico, antes englobante dos discursos das demais esferas de valores, tem procurado um lugar a partir do qual possa continuar interferindo nos destinos que movem a “cidade dos homens”. A consolidação da ideia de “autonomia das esferas terrestres”, a formulação de proposições políticas, econômicas, ecológicas, éticas e jurídicas, bem como a disposição dialógica para aprimorá-las no debate público com “os homens de boa vontade” têm caracterizado o que conhecemos como Doutrina Social da Igreja, o corpus programático com o qual a instituição participa da moderna esfera pública. Neste artigo faremos uma análise da Encíclica Caritas in Veritate, do Papa Bento XVI, na qual o Sumo Pontífice analisa o cenário econômico mundial e propõe estratégias para um “desenvolvimento integral”. Destacaremos dois elementos que trazem profundas tensões ao texto papal, o conceito de subsidiariedade e a categoria de “autoridade política mundial”.

In recent years the economy has become globalized. Globalization is the increased flow of goods, services, capital, people, and culture facilitated by innovations in transportation and communication technologies. This chapter examines the phenomenon of globalization and its impact on Catholic social teaching. It looks, in particular, at Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical Caritas in Veritate. Pope Benedict criticizes how the current global economy exploits and excludes vulnerable populations around the world. Caritas in Veritate further develops the communio framework initiated by John Paul II and proposes that the communion of the three Persons of the Trinity provides a model for the shape globalization should take, recognizing unity in the midst of diversity. The chapter also looks at how Catholic social thought itself is globalizing, examining in particular the work of Mary Mee-Yin Yuen from Hong Kong and Stan Chu Ilo from Nigeria.

En el mes de julio de 2009 se publicó la primera encíclica social del Papa Benedicto XVI: Caritas in Veritate. Con este motivo, el habitual texto editorial de la Revista Fomento Social ha sido sustituido en este número por un grupo de reflexiones de carácter interdisciplinar realizadas por algunos de los miembros de su consejo de redacción. Así, éstos han abordado los temas en los que habitualmente trabajan, pero “reinterpretándolos” a la luz de la lectura del texto papal. Benedict XVI, the present pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, published Caritas in Veritate in June 2009. This third papal encyclical of his is distinguished from his others that dealt with the area of theology commonly known as “constructive” or “systematic.” In this most recent publication, Benedict XVI moves his writing into a rich historical arena known as Roman Catholic social teaching. Building upon a solid tradition of popes tackling political, social, and economic issues, Benedict XVI tackles acute contemporary concerns. The key areas Benedict XVI addresses in this encyclical are globalization, the economy, technology, and the environment. Germane to this text, this chapter will seek to explain how globalization is described and critiqued by Benedict XVI in this pivotal letter of his pontificate. While globalization will be the primary focus, because of the interrelationship between the aforementioned topics, attention obviously will also to be given to the other primary areas.
