This paper explores a case study of implementing blended learning in a third-year engineering course. In “Mechanical and Thermal Energy Conversion Processes”, blended learning was implemented by flipping the classroom (i.e. reversing the roles of lectures and homework) for selected units of the course. While flipping an entire course can be a significant undertaking, it can be much easier to take a blended approach and only flip lectures on selected topics. Many studies on flipped classroom learning have focused on the production of online lectures and active learning methods; often these case studies have overlooked the mechanisms to bring homework into the classroom. In this case study, homework was adapted into a variety of in-class activities, composed of hands-on learning, problem solving, and classroom discussions. In addition, a variety of classroom space types were used to conduct these activities. In this paper, the successes, challenges, and lessons learned for each type of activity and classroom space are discussed. Strategies for student engagement and acceptance of blended learning are also discussed.

This case study examines the use of the flipped classroom model in the polytechnic environment. This research gathered data through four student surveys and student grades and supported by overall instructor reflections. Overall this research indicates that using the flipped model in an engineering polytechnic education environment can be successful in extending in-class hands-on learning time while maintaining high levels of student satisfaction and grades

Faculty development programs are critical to the implementation and support of curriculum innovation. In this case study, the authors present lessons learned from ten years of experience in faculty development programs created to support innovation in technology enhanced learning. Stages of curriculum innovation are matched to stages of faculty development, and important lessons for success as well as current challenges are delineated and discussed.

This chapter presents some creative pedagogical strategies used during the distance or remote learning period due to the COVID-19 pandemic from March to May 2020. The chapter explores the use of coding in a transdisciplinary way. Strategies for online tools and their specific use both in remote and in face-to-face learning are presented. The role of hands-on learning as a process of learning-by-doing and how to involve pupils using the methods of a flipped classroom are also presented. The chapter concludes with the importance of games to keep the class group united and cohesive in order to develop a healthy sense of competitiveness and collaboration among the pupils.

Sophie drapes a six-foot-long boa constrictor over her shoulders and smiles widely, pleased with her new purchase from Jimmy, the shopkeeper at the toy store. Zoë helps Joseph count out a nickel and three pennies to buy a coveted Santa Bear, and Morgan is excited about the slightly worn plaid tie he bought for his dad. These images of children engaged in hands-on learning come to mind when I think about the kindergarten mini-mall: an interactive, real-world application of many skills and concepts. Students work cooperatively to create storefronts, collect and classify items to sell at their stores, and use money as both customers and shopkeepers to make purchases. My team member, Lou Toscano, and I look forward to the start of this exciting project each spring.

This chapter provides a case study of current practices and lessons learned in the provision of distance learning (DL)-based instruction in the field of information security. The primary objective of this case study was to identify implementations of distance learning techniques and technologies that were successful in supporting the unique requirements of an information security program that could be generalized to other programs and institutions. Thus the focus of this study was to provide an exemplar for institutions considering the implementation of distance learning technology to support information security education. The study found that the use of lecture recording technologies currently available can easily be used to record in-class lectures which can then be posted for student use. VPN technologies can also be used to support hands-on laboratory exercises. Limitations of this study focus on the lack of empirical evidence collected to substantiate the anecdotal findings.

This case study looks at implications of transitioning live to recorded lectures, a subject that has acquired an acute importance given COVID19 and the unexpected need to move lectures online. Over a period of six years, from 2015 to 2020, a questionnaire was handed out at the end of a ‘unit’ on environmental geoscience; a ‘unit’ at Australian universities represents a ‘course’ in the European and American tertiary system. This is a 2nd semester, 3rd year core unit of an Applied Geology course meaning that (most of) the polled students were about to acquire a bachelor of science finishing their undergraduate studies. The students were asked multiple questions related to iLectures and their attitude towards this asynchronous content delivery approach as integral part of a flipped classroom. Provided that such a STEM unit with 40-120 students can be deemed representative of the wider student community, the findings indicate that students in general have come to terms with online lectures, way before COVID19 gave them no other choice. Acceptance rates for iLectures were over 50 % across all years, except for 2020, a clear indication that COVID19 marred the online experience, probably due to oversaturation and isolation. The majority of the students saw benefits in this asynchronous lecturing approach, irrespective of whether the rationale behind it had been explained in detail. Despite seeing benefits of the flipped classroom and recorded lectures, one out of three students preferred live lectures. This number has increased after COVID19 to 40 %, yet another sign of the negative impact of the pandemic on online lecturing. This inference is unrelated to the quality of the recordings which was deemed high. Other than the conspicuous pandemic effect, the data show enough scatter to rule out any sustained trend of student attitudes across the years. This demonstrates the heterogeneous demographics of the students taking this unit. Finally, the importance of meaningful extended lecture notes to complement the recordings is highlighted.

This study analyzes flipped mode of instruction in Corporate Finance. In the current environment, with many students in quarantine and greater emphasis on self-study, it is even more relevant to understand how students understand and retain concepts derived from online environment. In this study, performance of students in flipped mode is compared with the performance in traditional lecture-style. In flipped class, students watched a brief video-lecture, took an online assessment quiz prior to attending an interactive discussion-based class session, unlike the traditional lecture style. The results of this study suggest that with flipped mode, most students take greater responsibility of their learning, prefer hands-on learning, achieve more and feel more satisfied with their performance. However, there is no statistical difference in the test scores of students in the flipped classroom as compared to the traditional classroom.
