Media hora jugando a los dados was written by Agustín Espinosa as a contribution to the life, sign and work of the painter José Jorge Oramas (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1911-1935), from the Luján Pérez School. It is one of the avant-garde texts in the Spanish language par excellence, in which the scope and significance of the work of the painter from Gran Canaria is celebrated.

During the Baroque period, Luis De GÓngora y Argote (1561–1627) wrote the first Spanish-language closeted literature. Some three hundred years later, the challenging originality of his closet verse, openly studied and appreciated by a cultured, intellectual elite, played a pivotal role in the development of homosexual literature in the early-twentieth-century avant-garde movements of Spain and Latin America. This essay will briefly explore how twentieth-century Mexican avant-garde writers expressed the closet using baroque models. The thesis is that the rhetorical strategies of obscuritas provided Góngora an ideal instrument for representing the closet, which in literature is defined as a symbolic space that allows writers to represent and readers to recognize homosexuality in a heterosexual context. The pertinent OED definition of closet as an adjective reads, “secret, covert, used esp. with reference to homosexuality” (“Closet”). This recognized use of obscuritas is validated further in the observations of the Peruvian colonial writer Espinosa Medrano, one of Góngora's seventeenth-century commentators, who epitomizes the consolidation of baroque aesthetics in Hispanic America by the criollo elite. The final chapter in this tour of the baroque closet will examine how the Mexican avant-garde became aware of obscuritas through Federico García Lorca's Gongorine lectures and poetry.

In memory of my friend Diane Dietchman Tong (1943–1998), an independent scholar who wrote her MA on the Judeo-Spanish language commonly called Ladino. There is a rumour in my family that when I was born in 1940 my parents thought about sending out a card that would read, 'Now we present our son Dick, one part kike, some parts spic'. Politically correct before everyone else, so avant-garde were they, my parents decided instead to print a more conventional announcement of my arrival.

Con atención preferente a escritos autobiográficos y a su expediente académico, el presente artículo propone una mirada sobre la elección vocacional, formativa y, al cabo, profesional que lleva a Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920), en primer término, desde su Gran Canaria natal hasta el Madrid de las postrimerías isabelinas, en 1862, y, muy poco después, desde las aulas de la facultad de Derecho de la Universidad Central hasta el desempeño laboral en diversas redacciones periodísticas y, más todavía, hasta la cúspide de la narrativa decimonónica en lengua española. This article takes a look at the vocational, formative and professional choice that led Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920) first from his native Gran Canaria to the Madrid of the last Isabelline years, in 1862; shortly after this, he went from the classrooms of the Faculty of Law of the Central University to work in various newsrooms, and even reaching a the cusp of the nineteenth-century narrative in the Spanish language. The methodology pays preferential attention to the autobiographical writings and his academic record.

The measurement of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children has witnessed significant international growth over the past decade in an effort to improve pediatric health and well-being, and to determine the value of health-care services. In order to compare international HRQOL research findings across language groups, it is important to demonstrate factorial invariance, i.e., that the items have an equivalent meaning across the language groups studied. This study examined the factorial invariance of child self-reported HRQOL across English- and Spanish-language groups in a Hispanic population of 2,899 children ages 8–18 utilizing the 23-item PedsQL™ 4.0 Generic Core Scales. Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed specifying a five-factor model across language groups. The findings support an equivalent 5-factor structure across English- and Spanish-language groups. Based on these data, it can be concluded that children across the two languages studied interpreted the instrument in a similar manner. The multigroup CFA statistical methods utilized in the present study have important implications for cross-cultural assessment research in children in which different language groups are compared.
