Two Japanese species, Ceratrimeria takaoensis (Kinoshita, 1916) and C. yasumatsui (Uchida, 1940), were redescribed based on fresh material, including that from the type localities and using modern morphological criteria. The main diagnostic characters of the genus Ceratrimeria are also discussed. In addition, nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and 16S ribosomal RNA genes of specimens obtained from the type localities of both congeners are analyzed allowing for their species statuses to be confirmed. Barcoded specimens are deposited in the National Museum of Nature and Science, Tsukuba, Japan and the DNA sequence data are available in the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases.

The genus Servaea Simon 1887 is revised and redefined. Descriptions and identification keys are provided to the following sixspecies, of which three are described as new: Servaea incana (Karsch 1878), Servaea narraweena n. sp., Servaea melaina n.sp., Servaea spinibarbis Simon 1909, Servaea villosa (Keyserling 1881) and Servaea zabkai n. sp. The type species of thegenus, Servaea vestita (L. Koch 1879), is proposed here to be a junior synonym of Servaea incana. In addition to the diagnosesand descriptions, distributional and nucleotide sequence information are provided. DNA sequence data for the segment of COIused in other salticid studies was obtained for the five species for which suitable material was available. Intraspecific variationin S. villosa and S. incana were studied in more detail. Within-species divergence was S. melaina and S spinibarbis, had adjacent predicted distributions, one coastal on sandy soils and one inland on other soil types.

ABSTRACT The aeolid species Facelina bostoniensis (Couthouy, 1838) was originally described from Massachusetts and was later reported from the Eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. So far, no molecular systematic study of its amphiatlantic status has been carried out. Phylogenetic analyses (maximum likelihood and Bayesian) of DNA sequence data for the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 16S rRNA genes confirm the amphiatlantic status of F. bostoniensis. My findings show that this species is restricted to the Atlantic realm and that the species recorded from the Mediterranean is not F. bostoniensis but F. vicina (Bergh, 1882). It is hypothesized that previous records of F. bostoniensis from the Mediterranean Sea were actually misidentifications of F. vicina.

Sequences were obtained from the nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA genes for representatives of four ophiostomatoid genera (Ceratocystis, Gondwanamyces, Cornuvesica, and Sphaeronaemella) to resolve their phylogenetic position within the Ascomycota. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that these genera are monophyletic and share common ancestry with members of the Microascales. Based on sequence data, strains representing the mitotic species Gabarnaudia betae (Delacr.) Samson & W. Gams were shown clearly to be derived from Sphaeronaemella species. Sequences were also obtained from strains representing the syntype of Sphaeronaemella fragariae, the exholotype of Sphaeronaemella humicola, and the extype of Gabarnaudia tholispora. The results suggest that putative extype cultures for S. humicola and G. tholispora no longer represent the original material deposited. Our data also support the exclusion of S. fragariae from Sphaeronaemella. Key words: Cornuvesica, Gabarnaudia, Gondwanamyces, Sphaeronaemalla fragariae, ophiostomatoid fungi, ribosomal DNA.

A new species of natricid snake, Smithophis linearis sp. nov., is described on the basis of a single recently collected specimen from Yingjiang County, Yunnan Province, People’s Republic of China, and three historical specimens from Yunnan and from northeastern Myanmar. The new species is assigned to the genus Smithophis on the basis of its single internasal and single prefrontal shields, and on the basis of the results of phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequence data. The new species differs from its congeners in having the following combination of characters: temporal shields present, six or more circumorbital scales, and a distinctive colour pattern comprising regular, narrow, longitudinal dark and pale lines. Morphological and cytochrome b data are consistent with the recognition of Smithophis as distinct from the genus Opisthotropis. A revised key to the identification of the species of Smithophis is provided.

The taxonomy of cyclostome bryozoans is founded on characters of the skeleton, but molecular sequence data have increasingly shown that established higher taxa are not monophyletic. Here we describe the skeletal morphology of a new species from Guadeloupe (French West Indies) with erect ramose colonies consisting of long, curved zooids that are typical of the suborder Cerioporina among living cyclostomes. However, molecular evidence from nuclear ribosomal RNA genes 18S and 28S places the new taxon in the suborder Rectangulata, where this colony-form has not been previously recorded. It nests firmly within the genus Disporella Gray, 1848, in a strongly supported clade that also includes Plagioecia patina (Lamarck, 1816) (Tubuliporina) and the sister taxa Doliocoitis cyanea Gordon & Taylor, 2001 (Rectangulata) and Favosipora rosea Gordon & Taylor, 2001 (Cerioporina). The short and robust branches of the new Guadeloupe cyclostome, here named Disporella guada Harmelin, Taylor & Waeschenbach sp. nov., are well adapted to life in shallow rocky sites exposed to severe wave action, which appear to be its exclusive habitat.
