The primary goal of a speech-language pathologist in a laryngectomee is to restore the clients’ functional speech ability, facilitate comfortable swallowing, and, thus, improve the quality of life. The client, a 65-year-old female, came to the department of speech-language pathology for evaluation. She was diagnosed with carcinoma in the glottic and supraglottic region and had undergone. Total laryngectomy with hemithyroidectomy with primary tracheoesophageal puncture and voice prosthesis inserted. The client had lost her voice completely and had swallowing difficulty and presented with the complaint of food getting stuck in the throat and increased duration of swallowing.

This paper presents a successful behavioral case study in treatment of chronic refractory cough in a 60-year-old adult female. The efficacy for speech-language pathology treating chronic cough is discussed along with description of treatment regime. Discussion focuses on therapy approaches used and the patient's report of changes in quality of life and frequency, duration, and severity reduction of her cough after treatment.

Purpose The aim of this study was to identify the factors that are related to the quality of life and sleep of Brazilian speech-language pathology students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method This study adopted a cross-sectional, descriptive observational design. A total of 161 undergraduate speech-language pathology students participated in this study. The relationship between quality of life and sleep, socioeconomic characteristics, and health problems was examined using correlational analysis. Participant data were collected using an online form, which included questions that assessed their socioeconomic and health characteristics during the pandemic; the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index; and the first two questions of the World Health Organization Quality of Life–Brief Version. Results There were relationships between sleep dysfunction, a reduction in household income during the pandemic, membership to a risk group, living with at-risk individuals, time spent on the Internet (hours), and the purpose underlying Internet use. Satisfaction with health was related to membership to a risk group. Perceptions of the negative impact of the pandemic on mental health were related to sleep dysfunction and quality of life during the pandemic. Conclusion The present findings underscore the need for policies that promote health, prevent diseases, and address mental health problems during times of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract The assessment and treatment of swallowing disorders have become central to the practice of the medical speech-language pathologist. The outcomes associated with swallowing and swallowing disorders are severe with aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition and dehydration, and reduced quality of life among the most concerning. Clinicians practicing in this area possess unequal skills, training, and experience, and there is considerable variation in practice in the field. This article focuses on variation and error in swallowing assessment with attention to reliability and accuracy of the videofluoroscopic swallowing assessment. In this self-critical overview of the practice, recommendations are made for developing a standardized assessment protocol, shared lexicon, and specialty recognition in the area of swallowing and swallowing disorders.

This chapter discusses a clinical case from the interdisciplinary practice of dysphagia and the collaboration between speech-language pathology clinicians and dietetics professionals from the perspective of the speech-language pathologist. The discussion begins with an introduction to the normal swallowing process to better understand disordered swallowing and the role of therapeutic and compensatory interventions. Changes in swallowing that occur with normal aging and their impact are identified and reviewed. Common interventions and considerations in the clinical management of dysphagia from the perspective of the speech-language pathologist are included with rationale based on the current literature. Swallowing motor functions and factors in dysphagia decision making are discussed in relationship to clinical problem solving with a sample case and nutritional interventions. The chapter closes with general recommendations and conclusions to assist in learning and understanding of the concepts discussed.

“While there is life, we must provide quality of life.” Paul Raia Swallowing and cognition have always been considered two major contributors to quality of life. It's interesting to note, for example, when someone asks for directions, instructions are often provided by using favorite restaurants as landmarks. It is customary for many people spend significant amounts of time and effort accessing executive functions to plan, organize, and cook daily meals as well as to prepare for special occasions and holidays. The enjoyment experienced by sharing a meal with friends and family members is positively anticipated. The evaluation of functional and quality of life outcomes continues to emerge as a vital component of state-of-the-art health care. Specific to the field of medical speech-language pathology, any discussions pertaining to dementia and/or dysphagia bring quality of life issues to the forefront. Dysphagia as a sequelae of dementia is understood to have significant negative impacts on quality of life due to the challenges associated with its management in persons with progressive, degenerative neuropathology and resulting cognitive, sensory, and motor decline.

Speech-language pathology services in Greece continue to expand, and it is an exciting time to be a speech-language pathologist within the existing structure. The role of speech-language pathologists in Greece has changed over the years from therapist, to include educator, advocate, and politician. The many tasks facing speech-language pathologists in Greece have been difficult ones. It has taken patience and persistence to educate the general public about communication disorders and the role of speech-language pathologists in treating these problems. It has also been arduous to convince the government to recognize our profession and its value within the community. We believe that by the establishment of a speech-language department at a Greek university, our profession will be fortified and renewed. The development of a university-based training program will aid in the creation of posts in educational and hospital settings, as well as bridge the gap that exists between the current number of speech-language pathologists and the number of people requiring treatment. Furthermore, the creation of a university department will allow for much needed research within the Greek community. In particular, it may aid in the gathering of normative data and the standardization of tests for the Greek population. The path in establishing speech-language pathology education and services in Greece is a long one, but through our commitment and our energetic and earnest approach, we hope to reach our goals.

Purpose The purpose of this article is to situate the recent language disorder label debate within a school's perspective. As described in two recent The ASHA Leader articles, there is international momentum to change specific language impairment to developmental language disorder . Proponents of this change cite increased public awareness and research funding as part of the rationale. However, it is unclear whether this label debate is worthwhile or even practical for the school-based speech-language pathologist (SLP). A discussion of the benefits and challenges to a shift in language disorder labels is provided. Conclusions Although there are important arguments for consistency in labeling childhood language disorder, the reality of a label change in U.S. schools is hard to imagine. School-based services are driven by eligibility through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, which has its own set of labels. There are myriad reasons why advocating for the developmental language disorder label may not be the best use of SLPs' time, perhaps the most important of which is that school SLPs have other urgent priorities.

Abstract In recent years, colleges and universities across the country have been called upon to increase the quality of education provided and to improve student retention rates. In response to this challenge, many faculty are exploring alternatives to the traditional “lecture-centered” approach of higher education in an attempt to increase student learning and satisfaction. Collaborative learning is one method of teaching, which has been demonstrated to improve student learning outcomes.
