Organometallic dendrimers and its applications have been introduced. Bis((4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl)ethynyl)bis-(tributylphosphine)platinum(II) with dendritic acetonide end groups have been synthesised by the divergent method. 1,3,5-benzyl(4-ethynyl(phenylethynyl))-trans-[Ru(dppe)2]ethynyl-3,5-phenyl{4-ethynyl(phenylethynyl)-trans-[Ru(4-(phenylethynyl))(dppe)2]}2)3 with nine dialkynylruthenium centers have been synthesised by convergent method. Optical power limiting measurements performed at 532 nm show that the OPL properties improve with increasing size of the dendritic substituent. Z-scan measurements carried out at different pulse-repetition frequencies show that the two-photon absorption cross-section is 10 GM. Significant increase in NLO properties seen on generation increase is maintained when the coefficients are scaled by the number of metal atoms, the dendrimer molecular weights, or hyperpolarizability (π-delocalizable electrons) in the dendritic structures. Nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are required for various applications, including the processing of optical signals, optical data storage, nanophotonics, and biophotonics.

A novel multibranched nonlinear dye,4, 4´, 4´´-tris(9-carbazyl-trans-styryl) triphenylamine (TCSTPA),has been designed and synthesized aimed at two-photon absorption applications. Two-photon absorption cross section of the multibranched dye was obtained as high as 2.35×10-47cm4s photon-1molecule-1pumped with femtosecond laser beam at 800 nm. One-photon and two-photon absorption optical properties were demonstrated in solutions. Three-dimensional (3D) optical data storage experiments were carried out by two-photon photobleaching in the multibranched-dye doped polymethylmethacryate (PMMA) with a 3D data storage density of approximate 14 Gbits/cm3. Research on the two-photon photobleaching ability shows the novel two-photon absorption dye with multibranched molecular motif has higher photosensitivity than traditional linear two-photon absorption dyes do.

AbstractOptical data storage is being investigated for use in enterprise archival data storage due to its stability, low energy consumption and low total cost of ownership. Here we present results on a method for manufacturing optical discs with dozens of writable layers using polymer coextrusion. This can greatly increase the capacity with low fabrication cost. Data are written by modulating the fluorescence of an organic dye, and exhibits a threshold dependence on the laser power, allowing the bits to be welllocalized in the intended layers. This is a result of the heat generated from the absorbed laser power, and is realizable with a continuouswave laser. We also discuss the lifetime and photostability of the dyes. These combined results promise a media that is lower in cost and higher in capacity than current commercial options.
