It was modelled on the UK’s Athena Swan Charter (Advance HE), a framework for improving gender equity and diversity in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM); specifically, within higher education and research.

As you read this column, feel free to get up and move around. Make access for yourself. We are in dialogue, and we should all be comfortable to nurture this conversation.As an early career science librarian, it can be challenging to incorporate the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education into my work. In the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine) students, faculty, and staff are pressed for time and are focused on skills, data, and gaining familiarity with specific resources. In this column, I reflect on the frame Scholarship as Conversation, and draw on it for inspiration and guidance in my practice. I highlight examples of this discussion with this frame and how it informs my instruction, collection development, and outreach efforts.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, abbreviated as STEM, is a promising field with increasing popularity due to its benefits in the modern world of globalization and modernization. Science and mathematics are the basics of the technological developments going on in the world. Thus, the children should be motivated to learn STEM from early school days. The minds of small kids are like a sponge, and they can grasp everything quickly. STEM education should be encouraged from childhood so that children like it and continue with it for higher education. This chapter discusses some of the challenges observed while encouraging children to learn STEM early and lists solutions.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine (STEMM) in Higher Education (HE) were beginning to tackle their lack of diversity. The COVID-19 pandemic has seen the HE sector (including universities, publishers and funding bodies) enter a period of upheaval that risks reversing such progress. This article demonstrates how the unequal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the professional and personal lives of groups currently under-represented in academic STEMM is likely to widen and reproduce systemic inequalities already present within these fields. Evidence emerging from the streamlined COVID-19 related funding call indicates a backward step in gender equity when compared to most recent UKRI figures. The lack of data on other protected characteristics makes understanding and mitigating the damage a significant challenge. We outline specific actions that must be taken to address this challenge, ultimately arguing that academic STEMM must use this time of change as an opportunity to embed policies and practices that place equality, diversity and inclusion at the forefront.

Kemampuan aritmetika sosial siswa pada mata pelajaran matematika yang masih rendah dibutuhkan tindakan dalam pembelajaran dikelas. Salah satunya dengan melakukan pembelajaran melalui pendekatan Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan peningkatan hasil belajar siswa pada materi aritmetika sosial melalui pendekatan Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM). Metode penelitian tindakan kelas yang dilaksanakan sebanyak 2 (dua) siklus digunakan dalam penelitian ini, dikarenakan untuk melihat peningkatan kemampuan aritmatika sosial siswa. Subjek dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 41 siswa kelas VII yang sedang mempelajari materi aritmatika sosial. Kegiatan pembelajaran dirancang melalui pendekatan STEM melalui tugas proyek yaitu membuat tape singkong dan keripik pisang/singkong. Pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini dilakukan melalui tes tertulis untuk penilaian pengetahuan, sedangkan untuk penilaian keterampilan dilihat dari persiapan sampai laporan akhir tugas proyek yang diberikan. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif kuantitatif untuk tes dan deskriptif kualitatif untuk observasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan STEM benar-benar membantu siswa dalam memahami materi aritmetika sosial yang dapat dilihat dari peningkatan hasil belajar yang diperoleh dari subjek penelitian.

Resumen La elección de carrera en estudiantes con alta capacidad (AC) no está exenta de dificultades. En STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) las mujeres con AC no eligen dichas áreas en la misma proporción que los hombres. Se buscó entender cómo los factores contextuales influyen en las decisiones académicas. Es un estudio cualitativo donde se realizaron ocho focus group de estudiantes con AC e intereses en STEM. Los resultados muestran a los padres como modelos; sin embargo, el mensaje paterno puede ser amenazante para las mujeres. Los profesores inspiran y entregan orientaciones claras basadas en las habilidades más que desde un desafío real. Las actividades escolares permiten una experiencia directa con la disciplina, pero producen poca vinculación con reales áreas de interés.

El acceso a la educación de calidad para las mujeres permite alejarlas de la pobreza e incrementa sus posibilidades de incorporarse al mercado laboral; además, coadyuva a la disminución de la brecha de género y aporta al crecimiento, desarrollo e innovación de los países. Sin embargo, su presencia en los campos STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)  es un reto, pues se enfrentan en ocasiones con ambientes académicos poco favorables. Por lo anterior, el objetivo de este artículo es estudiar las percepciones de las mujeres STEM de alto rendimiento académico (en educación superior) con relación a las motivaciones que las llevaron a elegir esas carreras, sus creencias sobre la mayor presencia masculina en esos campos y su sentir sobre los posibles actos de discriminación. Además, se propone indagar sus puntos de vista con relación a la actual enseñanza de las matemáticas que reciben las niñas. Lo anterior para conocer la realidad de las mujeres STEM, con el fin de identificar áreas de oportunidad y, de esa forma, proponer acciones que permitan contribuir al crecimiento de las jóvenes que actualmente estudian carreras STEM o están por elegir lo que estudiarán. Método: Se trata de un estudio cualitativo para el que se realizaron trece entrevistas semiestructuradas a universitarias. El análisis se llevó a cabo con el software ATLAS.ti. Resultados: Se encontró que ellas, desde edades tempranas, mostraron un gusto por las matemáticas; además, reciben el apoyo de su familia, pero se mantiene la preocupación sobre el futuro de las mujeres en esos campos. Igualmente se halló que ellas consideran que hay más varones en estos campos porque a las mujeres les dan miedo las áreas STEM por los conocimientos que se requieren, aunado a que se tiene la creencia de que las ingenierías son para los varones; asimismo han recibido actos discriminatorios. Discusión o Conclusión: Se concluye que las instituciones de educación superior todavía tienen el reto de trabajar para eliminar los ambientes hostiles que se producen hacia ellas. También es necesario incrementar el número de profesoras, realizar un estudio de egresadas para trazar su trayectoria laboral, trabajar sobre un programa de becas dirigido a estudiantes de estratos socioeconómicos bajos e impulsar las estancias en los sectores productivos para que conozcan los ambientes laborales relacionados con su carrera.

The real involvement presupposes first a connection at the level of understanding the phenomenon, an empathic relationship with the studied phenomena and processes, relationship that generate intuitions, leaps in understanding and knowledge, discoveries, revelations. The paper is based on the idea that information technology and communications today generate a global interaction based on a complex computer network, which forms a sphere that covers the planet, assimilated with a global intelligence, to which we can consciously adhere becoming a synapse. a global neural network.
