A typical 1200 mm (48 in.) wide × 200 mm (8 in.) deep prestressed concrete hollow-core unit is analyzed and designed in order to make a comparison between Eurocode 2 and ACI 318-08. This includes calculations for serviceability limit state of stress and moment of resistance, ultimate moment of resistance, ultimate shear capacities, flexural stiffness (that is, for deflection), and cover to pretensioning tendons for conditions of environmental exposure and fire resistance. Concrete cylinder strength is 40 MPa (5.8 ksi), and concrete cube strength is 50 MPa (7.3 ksi). The hollow-core unit is pretensioned using seven-wire helical strands. Worked examples are presented in parallel formation according to Eurocode 2 and ACI 318. For uniformly distributed loads, the design criterion between the service moment to service moment of resistance (Ms/Msr for EC2 and Ms/Msn for ACI 318) and the ultimate design bending moment to ultimate moment of resistance (MEd/MRd for EC2 and Mu/φMn for ACI 318) is well balanced for this example. Usually the service moment is critical unless the amount of prestress is small. For EC2-1-1, flexurally uncracked shear capacity VRd,c is only limiting when the span-to-depth ratio in this example is less than about 35. For ACI 318, flexurally cracked shear capacity φVci is limiting when span-to-depth ratio is 42, showing that shear cracked in flexure will often be the governing criterion.

Zusammenfassung Neben gestiegenen Verkehrslasten führen strengere normative Regeln zu höheren Anforderungen an Spannbetonbrücken. Viele ältere Spannbetonbrücken im Bestand weisen daher rechnerische Defizite bei der Querkrafttragfähigkeit auf. Durch experimentelle und theoretische Untersuchungen konnten im Zuge eines Forschungsprojekts für die Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen (BASt) verfeinerte Berechnungsansätze für Querkraft erarbeitet werden. In diesem Beitrag werden am Institut für Massivbau der RWTH Aachen (IMB) durchgeführte Großversuche an Spannbetondurchlaufträgern vorgestellt. Die Träger mit Rechteck- oder I-Profil wiesen geringe Querkraftbewehrungsgrade auf und wurden durch Gleichstreckenlasten beansprucht. Auf Basis der Forschungsergebnisse wurde ein verfeinertes Bemessungsmodell entwickelt, das aus einem modifizierten Fachwerkmodell mit additivem Betontraganteil besteht und gegenüber dem Ansatz nach aktueller Nachrechnungsrichtlinie weitere Querkrafttragreserven berücksichtigt.

The special dry joints for precast prestressed concrete segments are invented in this study toovercome the limitation of conventional dry joints. Eight specimens of special dry joints were madeand subjected to direct shear test. Test parameters comprise concrete compressive strength (normaland high strength concrete) and steel fiber volume added in the special dry joint (0%, 0.5%, and1.0%). Test results revealed that the inclusion of steel fibers remarkably enhanced the shear capacityand ductility index. Failure mode of specimens was changed from shearing off to concrete crackingaround shear key corners, defined as ductile shearing-off failure. Furthermore, the existing equationsfor predicting shear capacity of keyed joints were validated by the experimental results. Amongavailable equations from literatures, the Turmo’s equation yields better prediction of the shearcapacity for the special dry joint made with normal strength concrete.

The proper distribution of prestressing force (PF) is the basis for the design of prestressed concrete (PSC) structures. However, the PF distribution obtained by predictive equations of prestress losses has not been sufficiently validated by comparison with measured data due to the poor reliability and durability of conventional sensing technologies. Therefore, the Smart Strand with embedded fiber optic sensors was developed and applied to PSC structures to investigate the long-term characteristics of PF distribution as affected by concrete creep and shrinkage. The data measured in a 20 m-long full-scale specimen and a 60 m-long PSC girder bridge were analyzed by comparing them with the theoretical estimation obtained from several design equations. Although the long-term decreasing trend of the PF distribution was similar in the measurement and theory, the equation of Eurocode 2 for estimating the long-term prestress losses showed better agreement with the measurement than ACI 209R and ACI 423.10R did. This can be attributed to the more refined form of the predictive equation of Eurocode 2 in dealing with the time-dependency of the PF. The study results also confirmed the need to compensate for the temperature variation in the long-term monitoring to derive the actual mechanical strain related to the PF. We expect our developed Smart Strand to be applied practically in PF measurement for the reasonable safety assessment and maintenance of PSC structures by improving several of the existing drawbacks of conventional sensors.
