The global community is experiencing widespread and rapid changes to labour-force participation with increasing expectations of flexible and highly adaptable skill sets. Workers can expect demands to acquire new, and augment existing, competencies as an integral part of the labour contract. Continuing education, professional development, augmentation of competencies and lifelong learning are the occupational mantras of the millennium. If these are the expectations of those already in the workforce, what then do support professionals expect for their clients, such as rehabilitation counsellors who have considerable skills in facilitating the re-entry of clients to the work-force? This paper examines several questions of continuing skilling and provides a set of recommendations with relevance to contemporary professional practice.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a Continuing Education and Professional Development (CE&PD) ‘intraprise’ by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa (GuOE) that involves the active collaboration and contributions of the University’s Professional Development Institute (PDI) as well as other internal and external partners. The ultimate goal of this endeavour is to gradually incorporate CE&PD as an integral component of GuOE’s mission. GuOE has identified five (5) criteria for its CE&PD initiatives: 1. Responding to clear and validated CE&PD needs; 2. Leveraging GuOE’s expertise and resources; 3. Involving and empowering GuOE ‘champions’; 4. Developing ‘win-win’ partnerships with internal (PDI and others) and external organizations and; 5. Generating net revenue for GuOE. In order to generate the required internal ‘buy in’ and commitment, a number of CE&PD pilot projects are being undertaken. The pilot projects allow for experimenting with various forms of CE&PD offerings and intended for different categories of learners.

This article examines the educational issues in ongoing professional education for spiritual care practitioners. A meta-evaluation of registration and evaluation data over four years (between 2013 and 2016) of one such monthly program conducted by Spiritual Health Victoria (Australia) will be examined. Recommendations are made to support healthcare managers and spiritual care educators in designing and developing continuing education programs for spiritual care practitioners in a variety of other professional health and care contexts.

This paper addresses education, particularly professional, scientific and technological education, in the context of local development, from the prism of productive local arrangements – PLAS. It highlights the effect of globalization on society´s transformations, the restructuring of the sectorial, institutional and organizational dynamics related to educational aspects, the territorial features of the said arrangements, and the actors that are part of them.  We understand that this is a priority in the social construction and an incentive to the scientific education professional development, with regard to the ethical-political nature of individuals.   We point out the need to foster interaction amongst educational institutions in order to   mobilize territorial resources, aiming at local development. We conclude with a few pertinent discussions about the value of education, both in its integral feature and in its adherence to parallel harmonies.
