In the northeastern Black Sea the search was performed for living eukaryotic organisms (micro- and meiobenthos) in hypoxic and anoxic conditions as well as measurement of O2 in the bottom water layer and in the upper layer of sediments. The results have shown the presence of a deep maximum abundance of zoobenthos in a depth range of 215–244 m. This aggregation of benthic fauna occupies a layer of 30 m along the vertical. In general, the proportion of active meiobenthos was no greater than 1.5% of the total number of organisms recorded from the sample. The presence of aerobic benthos near the upper boundary of the H2S zone can be explained by: sliding down of sediments from a higher depth; quasi-periodic O2 supply due to fluctuations in the position of the isopycna and/or sinking of waters downslope in the bottom Ekman layer. Also, in the case of physical entry of oxygen into the bottom layer, it can remain for a relatively long time in the upper part of the H2S zone due to the lack of deep Mn+2 flux and reaction with it.

The trace element composition of the vertical section of the Black Sea bottom sediments was studied. Based on the calculated enrichment factors relative to the average composition of the earth’s crust, it was shown that a lithogenic source is predominant for most trace elements. Significant enrichment was obtained for Ca and Sr (due to bioaccumulation) and for S, As and Mo (as a result of hydrogen sulfide contamination processes and the influence of mud volcanoes). A specific conditions of sedimentation were estimated based on the elements’ ratios which indicate: a presence of exhalation components in the deposits (Fe+Mn/Ti), a range of transport of terrigenous material (Ti/Zr) were estimated; paleoreconstruction of salinity (Corg/S), as well as redox conditions in the bottom water layer (Mn/Fe, Mo/Mn, V/(V+Ni), V/Mn).

In May and October 2017, expeditionary research was carried out in the area of Gelendzhik in the Black Sea at the R/V «Ashamba». The main tasks were the mapping of the seabed and the search for small-sized objects at the bottom of the water area using a WASSP WMB-3250 multibeam echo sounder. Surveys included areal surveying and drawing up bathymetric maps of test sites in Gelendzhik Bay and in the transition zone from the shelf to the continental slope. In addition, the echo sounder was used to search and determine the exact coordinates of the bottom seismograph installed at the seabed near the Divnomorskoye village in May 2016. The article presents the results of the work carried out.

The purpose of the article is to define the concept of the frontier and its components in the historical geography of Ukraine. The concept of FJ Turner's frontier was substantiated in the researches of Ukrainian historians M. Hrushevskyі, S. Rudnytsky, and J. Dashkevych. The source base of the study consists of scientific and cartographic works of historians and geographers. Several aspects of the spatial representation of the frontier are considered – directly in the name "Ukraine", which was identified with the peripheral land and as an integral part of the Ukrainian lands – the Black Sea, the Wild Field, Sloboda Ukraine. It is established that the concept of the frontier as a border or border strip can be considered in the context of the problems of historical geography, and the Ukrainian lands are at the intersection of different border contact zones. The frontier plays a significant role in shaping the ethnic composition of the population, as the contact zone of different ethnic groups is usually formed in such frontline or border areas. A peculiar phenomenon in the context of this concept is part of the Southern Ukrainian territory – Budjak. The opinion is substantiated that the majority of the Ukrainian territory is considered to be a zone of continuous historicalgeographical and chronological frontier.

Purpose. Assessing changes in the oxygen regime of the deep-water part of the Black Sea under the influence of climatic and anthropogenic factors over the past 40 years is the goal of the work. Methods and Results. For the analysis, the expedition data (2015–2019) and those from the Databank of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, (1980–2013) were used. The data for the deep-water part of the Black Sea (the depths exceeding 200 m) were selected from the array. The data on hydrophysical and hydrochemical parameters were subjected to expert assessment, and those including random errors in the values were excluded from the array. Then the average profiles of temperature, salinity, oxygen concentration, oxygen saturation, and nitrates concentration were plotted in the density scale (σt). Averaging was carried out by the inverse distance method followed by additional smoothing by the low-frequency filtering method. Conclusions. Against the background of the tendency of temperature increase in the upper layers of the water column and decrease of winter convective mixing intensity, the oxygen supply diminishes in all the layers of the Black Sea aerobic zone. Having been analyzed, the data for the 1980–2019 period showed that at the present stage, a “regime shift” resulting from the joint effect of climate changes and anthropogenic load took place in the ecosystem of the deep-water part of the Black Sea. Decrease in the oxygen saturation of water throughout the entire thickness of the aerobic zone shows that the process of the Black Sea basin eutrophication constitutes a significant factor affecting oxygen dynamics in the Black Sea waters.
