Observations of crack damage in the tooth structure from in vivo studies and in vitro experimental thermal cycling studies were combined with numerical analysis techniques to identify and isolate the influence of thermal stresses an the creation and propagation of cracks in teeth. The factors considered in this study included: (a) variations in tooth type or geometry (molar, bicuspid, etc.), (b) tooth age, (c) material properties of the tooth, (d) the magnitude of the change in the temperature of the environment surrounding the tooth, and (e) the thermal resistance between the tooth and the medium surrounding the tooth.

Abstract We describe a system, both hardware and software, that provides quantitative analysis and data reduction of two-dimensional electrophoresis gels. Image-analysis techniques are used to determine spot intensities and to match spot patterns among many gels. A pattern-recognition program is used to extract the useful information contained in the spot lists. The application of this technology to a study of supernates from bacterial cultures is described.

Pipelines and rigid risers are susceptible to corrosion. This is also a concern for pipes onshore and on process plants of floating platforms. Once detected the corrosion defect on pipes under cyclic loads, the analysis carried out to decide on keeping the pipe in operation or repair/replace should consider that the defect may experience cyclic plasticity caused by stress concentrations and thickness reductions. In this condition, ratcheting can cause rapid failure. This paper presents a study combining experiments and different analysis techniques to evaluate the occurrence of ratcheting in pipes subjected to cyclic bending and internal pressure. Experiments with different defect geometries were carried out. Numerical analysis using incremental plasticity and shakedown procedures are presented and compared with the experiments.

Many applications of aircraft require using dedicated elements of equipment attached to the fuselage or wings. These elements change aerodynamic properties of the aircraft. They modify spatial mass distribution and local stiffness in the attachment place. Structural dynamics of the modified airframe is usually investigated with use of the numerical analysis techniques. Verification of results of such the analysis is carried out experimentally. The basic method of testing is the experimental modal analysis. In the paper, there is presented an exemplary application of the experimental modal analysis to testing of a modified airplane structure with a search-light covered by its fairing attached under a wing. The described experiments consisted of the ground as well as the in-flight tests. The paper reports description and results of the experiments.
