The use of plants that resist insects has been suggested as a potential means of reducing aflatoxin contamination in some crops. Dent corn, Zea mays L., germplasm possessing the characteristic of a relatively tight, complete husk cover and germplasm possessing the characteristic of a relatively loose, incomplete husk cover on the ear were evaluated for 3 years at Tifton, GA, for aflatoxin contamination. In two of the three test years, corn ears with tight, complete husk cover sustained significantly lower mean amounts of aflatoxin than ears with loose, incomplete husk cover following artificial inoculation with Aspergillus flavus Link spores. Ears hand-infested with maize weevils, Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky), sustained significantly higher amounts of aflatoxin (329 ng·g−1) than ears infested with fall armyworms, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), (80 ng·g−1), European corn borers, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), (71 ng·g−1), or corn earworms Heliothis zea (Boddie) (60 ng·g−1). Overall, ears in the check (inoculated with A. flavus only) sustained significantly lower aflatoxin (37 ng·g−1) amounts than ears from plots supplemented with insects. Although insects were not applied in the check plots, some damage was observed on the ears.

The cultivation of alternative crops has an important role in world agriculture. Their market share is continuously growing in the food industry sector. In the present study, we show the cultivation and breeding perspectives of ornamental and blue corn. There exists possibility to cultivate ornamental corn in Hungary. There are many cultivars of ornamental corn, with various kernel colors, husks, stalks and leave colors. Blue corn is unique among other corns. Blue corn higher in protein, iron and zinc than commercial dent corn. Pests affective ornamental and blue corn are the same as those of other commercial corns. Ornamental and blue corns need to be grown a minimum of 500 m away from commercial yellow dent corn to minimize any cross pollination which may result in off-color kernel. Our aim in the presentation of this review was to broaden Hungarian literature.

Pericarp tissue was excised from mature dent corn (Zea mays L.) kernels harvested at physiological maturity, 30% moisture, and safe storage moisture, 15% moisture. There were significant differences in pericarp thickness among hybrids. Differences in thickness were significant at two individual measurement positions, but not on the overall mean thickness values. Thus, it appears that dent corn can be harvested at either 30% or 15% moisture with essentially similar pericarp thickness values, from excised pericarp strips.

Penelitian tentang pengaruh pemberian produktivitas pupuk organik terhadap hasil Tanaman Jagung (Zea mays L) di tanah mineral penelitian ini di laksanakan pada bulan Februari sampai Mei, yang bertempat di Sungai Salak Kecsmstsn Tempuling Kabupaten Indragiri Hilir Provinsi Riau. Penelitian ini menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) yang disusun secara faktorial yang terdiri dari 2 faktor dan 3 ulangan. Faktor B adalah bokashi pupuk kandang yang terdiri dari 4 taraf yaitu B0 (tanpa pemberianpupuk kandang), B1 (5 ton/ha) dan B2 (10 tom/ ha), serta B3 (15 ton/ha) Parameter yang di amati adalah tinggi tanaman, panjang daun ke tujuh, berat brangkasan basah, berat berangkasan kering, berat tongkol pertanaman sampel, diameter tongkol , produksi per plot, dan berat 100 biji. Selanjutnya data yang di peroleh di olah secara statistik, apabila F hitung lebih besar dari F tabel di lanjutkan dengan uji lanjut Tukey HSD pada taraf 5%. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa interaksi bokashi pupuk kandang dan varietas berpengaruh nyata terhadap berat tongkol dan produksi dan produksi per plot, akan tetapi tidak berpengaruh nyata terhadap tinggi tanaman, panjang daun ke tujuh, berat brangkasan basah, berat brangkasan kering , diameter tongkol dan berat 1000 biji. Untuk perlakuan bokashi pupuk kandang secara tunggal berpengaruh nyata terhadap terhadap diameter tongkol , akan tetapi tidak berpengaruh nyata terhadap tinggi tanaman, panjang daun ke tujuh, berat brangkasan basah, berat brangkasan kering, berat tongkol, produksi per plot, dan berat 1000 biji, perlakuan bokashi terbaik terdapat pada pemberian 15 ton/ha. Sedangkan perlakuan varietas secara tunggal berpengaruh nyata terhadap berat brangkasan basah, berat tongkol, dan produksi per plot seta berat 1000 biji, akan tetapi tidak berbeda nyata dengan tinggi tanaman, panjang daun ke tujuh, berat brangkasan kering, dan diameter tongkol. Varietass terbaik adalah NT 10

Objetivo: Caracterizar muestras representativas de razas mexicanas de maíz con marcadores moleculares ISSR, que ayuden a inferir relaciones genéticas vinculadas a su origen, morfología, aspectos ecogeográficos, distribución y usos. Diseño/metodología/aproximación: Se emplearon 54 muestras representativas de razas mexicanas de maíz caracterizadas con diez marcadores moleculares ISSR. Las distancias genéticas se calcularon con el coeficiente Dice y se generó un dendrograma con el método de agrupamiento jerárquico de varianza mínima de Ward. Para visualizar las muestras en dos dimensiones se efectúo un Análisis de Coordenadas Principales con el método de varianza mínima estandarizada. Resultados: En 76 loci detectados, el análisis de agrupamiento con una R2 semiparcial de 0.04 formó cinco grupos que compartieron características filogenéticas, ecogeográficas, morfoagronómicas, de distribución y usos especiales. El análisis de coordenadas principales mostró 21.2 % de la variación total para las dos primeras coordenadas. La primera coordenada principal explicó el 12.43 % de la variación total y separó las muestras por ubicación geográfica y usos especiales; la segunda coordenada principal explicó el 8.77 % de la variación total y separó las muestras por rangos altitudinales y ciclo biológico. Limitaciones del estudio/implicaciones: Se empleó únicamente una muestra representativa por cada raza de maíz, considerando la variabilidad genética de este cultivo se deben incluir más muestras de la misma raza. Hallazgos/conclusiones: Las relaciones genéticas entre las muestras de razas de maíz obedecen a patrones altitudinales y geográficos; aunque algunos agrupamientos compartieron aspectos filogenéticos, morfoagronómicos, de distribución y usos.
