The new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has impacted sports-related professionals. Brazilian fitness centers remained closed between March and July, resulting in a large number of professionals being dismissed. Although our country is still far from overcoming COVID-19, fitness centers are back in operation. In this study, we interviewed gym managers to understand the socioeconomic effects of the pandemic and identify strategies to reduce the chances of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. We considered 85 responses via a Google Forms questionnaire and identified that disinfection of the environment and availability of 70% alcohol were in consensus. There was also agreement on social distancing, mask use, and temperature assessment. Our main concern relates to social distancing, which seems unfeasible in environments focused on sports practice. We believe that these measures may difficult virus circulation, but may be insufficient to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection. Finally, the measures imposed by Brazilian state governors to restrict opening hours may worsen the implementation of social distancing in fitness centers.

The short note represents a travel “journal”, prepared between the end of October 2020 and the end of January 2021, in the Brazilian state of Ceará and in Rio de Janeiro. It includes brief descriptions of glimpses of everyday life, in the vague search for an anthropological gaze; reflections or rather attempts to develop an embryonic analysis; confused evocations of feelings and memories. The pandemic cannot be ignored, but the note shows how social distancing cannot occur in Brazilian society. Despite this, Brazil does not have a higher number of deaths than European countries, but lower.

Background: Any government needs to react quickly to a pandemic and make decisions on healthcare interventions locally and internationally with little information regarding the perceptions of people and the reactions they may receive during the implementation of restrictions. Methods: We report an anonymous online survey in Thailand conducted in May 2020 to assess public perceptions of three interventions in the Thai context: isolation, quarantine and social distancing. A total of 1,020 participants, of whom 52% were women, responded to the survey. Results: Loss of income was the main concern among respondents (>80% for all provinces in Thailand). Traditional media and social media were important channels for communication during the pandemic. A total of 92% of respondents reported that they changed their social behaviour even before the implementation of government policy with 94% reporting they performed social distancing, 97% reported using personal protective equipment such as masks and 95% reported using sanitizer products. Conclusions: This study showed a high level of compliance from individuals with government enforced or voluntarily controls such as quarantine, isolation and social distancing in Thailand. The findings from this study can be used to inform future government measures to control the pandemic and to shape communication strategies.

While safety is a high priority for our community during the Covid-19 pandemic, exercise is essential to improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle (ACSM, 2018). Fitness centers are reopening across the county with various safety precautions including masks and social distancing. Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2020) recommends all people to wear a mask (except for children younger than 2 years old, anyone who has trouble breathing, and anyone who is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the cloth face-covering without assistance), wearing a mask may not be possible in every situation. For example, during outdoor exercises, wearing a mask contributes to issues of potential breathing restrictions (lower the oxygen gas concentration levels in the recirculated air). This column concerns views on wearing masks while exercising, especially when doing it outdoors.
