Are there natural followers in human communication, speakers who consistently converge more than others? Similarly, are there natural leaders, speakers with whom others converge more? Are such tendencies consistent across different linguistic characteristics? We use the Switchboard Corpus, a large collection of telephone conversations, to perform a large-scale study of convergence of speakers in multiple conversations with different interlocutors, across six linguistic characteristics. Having data from each speaker in several conversations makes it possible to investigate whether there are individual differences in likelihood to converge, among speakers (more or less likely to converge), and among interlocutors (more or less likely to elicit convergence). We only find evidence for individual differences by interlocutor, not by speaker; this shows that there are natural leaders, who elicit greater degrees of convergence than others, across different characteristics and different conversations. The absence of a similar finding for natural followers, speakers who converge more than others, suggests that the role of social aspects in mediating convergence is stronger than that of putative individual differences in propensity to converge, or that such propensities are characteristic-specific.

Preceptorship is a period in which newly qualified staff nurses receive support from an experienced nurse to smooth their transition into the service. District nurses (DNs) from the authors’ trust informally expressed the need for a better transition between the completion of district nursing education and entry into the workforce. Hence, a structured preceptorship programme was developed and delivered. This article describes this service initiative and its evaluation by preceptors (n=14) and preceptees (newly qualified DNs; n=13). Both groups valued having a structured preceptorship programme. Preceptees agreed that having a named preceptor was very important, and preceptors felt that the role which they played was rewarding. Both groups felt that the role of the DN was a specialist role and that the preceptorship programme helped to support newly qualified staff make the transition into qualified DNs, clinical team leaders and, ultimately, caseload holders. A large-scale study of DN practice is required to develop a national consensus on the structure and content of preceptorship programmes for district nursing.

The article analyzes the history of the Chinese translation development from Ancient China to the present. Translation is the key to communication between two or more peoples, the key to connect the cultural, historical, political and social aspects of two or more countries. The interpreters recognized in China as an ancient profession, and later a translation science arose, which spread in many areas of the social sphere. The texts of the Buddhist sutras were the very first large-scale translations into Chinese, while Chinese interpreters, in the process, developed criteria and principles for translation from different points of view.

One of the key components of the susceptibility to cognitive biases is the ability to monitor for conflict that may arise between intuitively cued “heuristic” answers and logical principles. While there is evidence that people differ in their ability to detect such conflicts, it is not clear which individual factors are driving these differences. In the present large-scale study (N = 399) we explored the role of cognitive ability, thinking dispositions, numeracy, cognitive reflection, and mindware instantiation (i.e. knowledge of logical principles) as potential predictors of individual differences in conflict detection ability and overall accuracy on a battery of reasoning problems. Results showed that mindware instantiation was the single best predictor of both conflict detection efficiency and reasoning accuracy. Cognitive reflection, thinking dispositions, numeracy, and cognitive ability played a significant but smaller role. The full regression model accounted for 40% of the variance in overall reasoning accuracy, but only 7% of the variance in conflict detection efficiency. We discuss the implications of these findings for popular process models of bias susceptibility.
