Abstract CARPENTER STAINLESS TYPE 440F is a high-carbon chromium steel designed to provide stainless properties with maximum hardness. It is free-machining, easy to grind and polish, and has certain nongalling and noseizing properties in metal-to-metal contact. After austenitizing and quenching in oil, it shows a hardness of about Rockwell C 60. Carpenter Stainless Type 440F is used for machined parts which require higher hardness than possible with other free-machining grades of stainless steel. Type 440F usually is not recommended for vessels containing gases or liquids under high pressures. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, and joining. Filing Code: SS-449. Producer or source: Carpenter.

Abstract AISI Types 303 and 303 Se austenitic chromium nickel stainless steels to which elements have been added to improve machining and non-seizing characteristics. They are the most readily machinable of all the austenitic chromium nickel grades and are suitable for use in automatic screw machines. They are widely used to minimize seizing and galling. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness, creep, and fatigue. It also includes information on high temperature performance and corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, and joining. Filing Code: SS-126. Producer or source: Stainless steel mills.

Abstract AISI 5117 is a low-carbon, low-chromium steel for carburizing and other uses. It is recommended for carburizing applications where it is sufficient to have a low-hardenability core of medium strength and toughness combined with a hard, wear-resistant carburized case. It is used without carburizing in the as-rolled, annealed, normalized or quenched-and-tempered condition. It is suitable for use in the automotive, farm-machinery and many other industries. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, joining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: SA-376. Producer or source: Alloy steel mills and foundries.
