Previous research has indicated that performing repetitions to failure at greater than 80% one repetition max (1 RM) one day per week using a non-­‐linear training program can maintain strength and power in many athletic populations. However, this finding has not been directly assessed in male university volleyball players. The purpose of this study was to determine if non-­‐linear training two days a week could maintain upper and lower body strength, and vertical jump power and height over the course of a competitive volleyball season, measured at three time points. Eleven trained Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) male athletes were a part of a single training group which completed a maintenance program consisting of non-­‐linear training for 17 weeks. At each testing time point, the participants completed a bench press, squat, squat jump, countermovement jump, and three step jump and reach. We predicted that non-­‐linear resistance training of mixed intensities twice a week would allow players to maintain strength, vertical jump power, and vertical jump height. Results indicated that upper body strength can be maintained over the course of a competition period with non-­‐linear resistance training (p = 0.043). Scores for lower body strength, vertical jump squat jump power, vertical jump countermovement jump power, and vertical jump height increased over the course of the season (p's < 0.001, 0.14, 0.181, and 0.006, respectively). Our results indicate that male volleyball players can benefit from non-­‐linear training to maintain or improve performance when training at > 80% 1 RM to failure once a week during a competition season.

Volleyball is a sport comprised of multiple explosive efforts and multidirectional change of direction speed (CODS) actions. Since strength underpins both of these abilities, it is important to explore the relationship between these variables in order to develop strength and conditioning programs to optimize performance. The purpose of this study is to determine if a relationship exists between absolute and relative strength and measures of power and CODS in collegiate volleyball players. Archived testing data from ten (n = 10, age: 19.1 ± 1.2 yrs, Ht: 173.1 ± 6.64 cm, Wt: 67 ± 7.04 kg) female DII collegiate volleyball players were analyzed. These data included: block vertical jump (Block VJ), approach vertical jump (Approach VJ), a repeat jump test (i.e., four consecutive VJs), modified T-test, 5-0-5 agility test, a single leg triple hop test, and a 1-3RM deadlift. Significant large correlations were observed between relative strength and the repeat jump test, modified T-test, and 5-0-5 agility test. Significant correlations were also observed between absolute strength and the modified T-test. These results indicate that strength and conditioning professionals should emphasize the development of both absolute and relative lower-body strength to improve measures of power and agility in collegiate volleyball players.

Abstract Background The effect of concurrent training on the development of maximal strength is unclear, especially in individuals with different training statuses. Objective The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis study was to compare the effect of concurrent resistance and endurance training with that of resistance training only on the development of maximal dynamic strength in untrained, moderately trained, and trained individuals. Methods On the basis of the predetermined criteria, 27 studies that compared effects between concurrent and resistance training only on lower-body 1-repetition maximum (1RM) strength were included. The effect size (ES), calculated as the standardised difference in mean, was extracted from each study, pooled, and analysed with a random-effects model. Results The 1RM for leg press and squat exercises was negatively affected by concurrent training in trained individuals (ES =  – 0.35, p < 0.01), but not in moderately trained ( – 0.20, p = 0.08) or untrained individuals (ES = 0.03, p = 0.87) as compared to resistance training only. A subgroup analysis revealed that the negative effect observed in trained individuals occurred only when resistance and endurance training were conducted within the same training session (ES same session =  – 0.66, p < 0.01 vs. ES different sessions =  – 0.10, p = 0.55). Conclusion This study demonstrated the novel and quantifiable effects of training status on lower-body strength development and shows that the addition of endurance training to a resistance training programme may have a negative impact on lower-body strength development in trained, but not in moderately trained or untrained individuals. This impairment seems to be more pronounced when training is performed within the same session than in different sessions. Trained individuals should therefore consider separating endurance from resistance training during periods where the development of dynamic maximal strength is prioritised.

Background: Recent research has compared explosive deadlift to kettlebell training observing their effects on strength. The kettlebell swing is a popular practical exercise as it shares share a hip hinge movement with the explosive deadlift, but the two have not been compared. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of kettlebell swing vs. explosive deadlift training on strength and power. Methods: Thirty-one recreationally resistance-trained men (age = 23.1 ± 2.3 years, height = 175.5 ± 6.6 cm, mass = 83.9 ± 13.8 kg, 1RM deadlift = 159.9 ± 31.7 kg) were randomly assigned to one of two groups [kettlebell swing group (KBG) n = 15, or explosive deadlift group (EDLG) n = 16]. Vertical jump height, isometric mid-thigh pull (MTP), and 1RM deadlift were measured pre and post training. Both groups trained twice per week for 4 weeks. Volume and load were increased after the first 2 weeks of training. Results: A 2 (time) x 2 (group) mixed factor ANOVA revealed a significant (P<0.05) increase in deadlift 1RM (pre: 159.9 ± 31.7 kg, post: 168.9 ± 31.8 kg) and vertical jump height (pre: 56.6 ± 9.9 cm, post: 57.9 ± 9.7 cm) for both groups, but were not significantly different between groups. There were no significant changes in MTP. Conclusions: Strength and conditioning professionals may use both kettlebell swings and explosive deadlifts to increase deadlift strength and vertical jump power.

The purpose of this service is to provide socialization and training at Gloria Muda Tambakrejo volleyball club, Bulurejo Village, Purwoharjo District, Banyuwangi Regency. The method used in this service is discussion and direct training (demonstration and practice) to the coaches and volleyball players of Gloria Muda Tambakrejo. The result of this activity was that the volleyball club coach Gloria Muda Tambakrejo gained new insights regarding the training program and how to train and was able to develop a training program that could be used to develop the technique and game of the Tambakrejo volleyball club. Young Gloria club players get training programmed according to the training program that suits their needs. Increased basic technical skills of passing, smash and vertical jump height of club players Gloria Muda Tambakrejo. Increased skills of passing and smash techniques and physical conditions (vertical jump) by 6.17%. For the basic technique of passing, there was an increase of 9, 53%. For the basic smash technique there is an increase of 3.20%. For the ability to vertical jump there is an increase of 3, 87%.
