Globally, the governance and management of land and sea resources by Indigenous peoples and local communities has existed for tens of thousands of years and continues to exert influence over a quarter of the worlds’ surface today (Garnett et al 2018). Yet the primacy of Western science still overshadows the bio-cultural knowledges of Indigenous peoples and local communities. To move beyond exclusions and disenfranchised worldviews, science theory and practice must begin to embrace, engage, respect and support Indigenous peoples and local communities’ bio-cultural knowledges. We draw on the marine research sector, specifically fisheries, to demonstrate where knowledges are providing useful expertise and call for multidisciplinary approaches to co-productions of science.

(Prepared for Nature Communications review).

The main directions of journalistic activity of the Major General, Minister of Military Affairs of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR), and the Ukrainian People's Republic in exile Volodymyr Salskyi, which became an integral part of his social and political activity, are considered. Passion for journalism was typical of many prominent personalities of the early 20th century. V. Salskyi considered opinion journalism an essential element of educational activities, and under the war conditions – an effective method of ideological influence on the people, the formation of its national consciousness and patriotism. The military-political figure's first attempts in opinion journalism occurred in 1920, stimulated by his own experience of participation in World War I and the Ukrainian National Revolution, difficult domestic and foreign policy circumstances in Ukraine, and the struggle against Bolshevik Russia. The top of his journalistic career was the emigration period, especially in the second half of the 1920s. The publications with which V. Salskyi collaborated were considered, in particular, «Tabor», «Hurtuimosia», «Tryzub», «Za Derzhavnist». The minister's articles were united around national-state issues, the propaganda of patriotism, sincere faith in the Ukrainian cause's success, and, finally, the building of an independent united Ukraine. The central leitmotif of almost all publications is the army, the history of its formation, heroism in the national liberation struggle of 1917–1921, as well as the role in the further struggle for the realization of the national idea. V. Salskyi's articles are analyzed. His articles demonstrated the author's remarkable writing talent; his publications on military-political and military-historical topics showed in-depth knowledge of political science, theory and practice of military affairs, and international politics. V. Salskyi's opinion journalism played a significant role in popularizing the Ukrainian national idea and the development of cultural, educational, and national life of Ukrainians in exile. Keywords: Volodymyr Salskyi, Minister of War, journalism, «Tryzub», national idea.

The article addresses the problem of developing scientifically sound approaches and quantitative criteria for assessing reliability of expert evidence that take into account the contextual information contained in case materials and are based on likelihood ratios. The evolution of the system of views on this problem in forensic science theory in Russia and abroad is considered, and the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes Guideline for Evaluative Reporting in Forensic Science is analyzed. The Guideline was published in 2015. This manual is a practical tool for experts assessing the evidentiary value of their conclusions resulting from specific types of forensic examination. It also sets out recommendations on how to present the results of such an assessment in the format of the so-called “evaluative report”. The starting point of the comparative analysis is the problem of how the legal system and its subjects interpret the results reported by an expert witness, as well as any other forensic evidence expressed in probabilistic terms. At present the probabilistic way of describing uncertainties, originating in the natural sciences, is firmly established in criminalistics and forensic science. A clear position that has formed in the context of the Russian legislation, theory and practice of forensic expertise is to interpret probability as synonymous with assumption. In the foreign forensic science community the fate of probabilities was different. The authors emphasize the practical value of further improving the tools for assessing the reliability of examination results in the forensic sciences and related areas.
