Surface well deformation and failure in a mining area are a key issue challenging the surface well gas extraction technique. To provide information for the design of gas extraction surface wells in mining areas, the deformation and failure of surface wells with different materials under the influence of mining-induced rock movement were analyzed based on a three-dimensional physical similarity simulation and key strata theory. The research findings reveal that the fractures in the overlying strata had an elliptic-parabolic shape. The stope center was the highest point in the fracture zone. Horizontal shear deformation was most likely to occur in the thick strata (horizontal shear deformation could be larger if they were key strata) with large strength and stiffness near the intersection between the fracture surface of the overlying strata and the surface well. Due to the shear force and bending moment of the key strata, the surface well deformed into an S-shape. In addition, the surface well was vulnerable to shear deformation in the key strata. The surface well deformation did not weaken from bottom to top due to rock movement. Instead, it was subject to the influence of the rupture strength of the key strata. The surface well above the key strata was prone to tensile strain-compressive strain transition. In contrast, an abrupt change in the compressive strain occurred in the surface well below the key strata where tensile failure may occur. Moreover, a mechanical model of the surface well during the movement of the key strata was established according to the characteristics of the surface well deformation. The test results provide important information on the design optimization of surface wells and high-risk area protection in mining areas.

In the process of underground cavern excavation, the existence of the interlayer shear zones or large faults often makes the surrounding rock tend to be unstable or even deformed. Under the influence of interlayer shear zone C2, different degrees of deformation and failure occurred in many parts during the excavation of the Baihetan left bank underground powerhouse. Based on field monitoring and numerical calculation, this paper studies the deformation and failure characteristics of the rock mass with C2 in the whole excavation process and the failure mechanisms are analyzed. The results show that C2 has poor mechanical properties. In the process of excavation, it mainly induces two failure modes: rock collapse and shear deformation, which specifically leads to rock collapses, large deformation and shotcrete cracking in the main powerhouse, and shear deformation in the omnibus bar caves. In addition, the similarities and differences between this study and other studies on the deformation and failure of surrounding rock of underground powerhouse in recent years are discussed, and the relevant treatment measures for C2 are given. The above research results can be a reference for other related studies.

Rapid identification of structural damage positions is essential to the post-disaster rehabilitation of structures and infrastructures. Large shear deformation, e.g., shear failure of bridge piers, shear-slip of slopes, and shear cracking of structural walls, is often the cause of structural instability. Distributed optical fibre sensing (DOFS) techniques have an advantage over point-based sensors in terms of spatial continuous structural condition monitoring. This paper presents the development of new measurement theory and algorithm to evaluate the structural shear deflection based on the large beam deflection and optical bend loss theories. The proposed technique adopted a photon-counting Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (ν-OTDR) with polymer optical fibres (POFs) which has a large deformation measurement range and high spatial resolution. In the experiment, shear deformation events can be successfully detected and evaluated from the proposed technique. When the normalised shear deformation is larger than 0.2, both the event locations and the magnitudes can be accurately determined. When normalised shear deformation is lesser than 0.2, the error in the magnitude evaluation increased, but the event location can be found with an absolute error <0.5 m. Multiple shear events can be treated as independent events when they are separated by more than 5 m. Various configurations of POFs attached to concrete beam specimens for rupture failure monitoring were also studied. The configuration that could maximise the POF curvature at the beam failure produced the largest ν-OTDR signals. In other configurations in which the POFs were only stretched at failure, the signals were less strong and were influenced by the POF-structure bonding strength.
