Based on the geological and hydrogeological conditions of the Jurong Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Station (JPSHP), a 3D groundwater flow model was developed in the power station area, which took into account the heterogeneity and anisotropy of fractured rocks. A control inversion method for fractured rock structural planes was proposed, where larger-scale fractures were used as water-conducting media and the relatively intact rock matrix was used as water-storage media. A statistical method was used to obtain the geometric parameter values of the structural planes, so as to obtain the hydraulic conductivity tensor of the fractured rocks. Combining the impermeable drainage systems of the upper storage reservoir, underground powerhouse and lower storage reservoir, the 3D groundwater seepage field in the study area was predicted using the calibrated model. The leakage amounts of the upper storage reservoir, powerhouse and lower storage reservoir were 710.48 m3/d, 969.95 m3/d and 1657.55 m3/d, respectively. The leakage changes of the upper storage reservoir, powerhouse and lower storage reservoir were discussed under the partial and full failure of the anti-seepage system. The research results provide a scientific basis for the seepage control of the power station, and it is recommended to strengthen the seepage control of the upper and lower storage reservoirs and the underground powerhouse to avoid excessive leakage and affect the efficiency of the reservoir operation.

The rockburst disaster in the hard rock caused by excavation and unloading of deep underground caverns threatens the safety of engineering construction. In recent years, the microseismic monitoring technology, which can dynamically monitor the whole process of progressive failure of rock mass in real time, has been widely used in rockburst monitoring and early warning of underground engineering. In view of the slight rockburst in local surrounding rock during the excavation of underground powerhouse of Huanggou Pumped Storage Power Station, a rockburst microseismic monitoring system is constructed. And through the analysis of the temporal and spatial activity of microseisms during the monitoring period, the potential risk areas of rockbursts are identified and delineated. The monitoring results show that the microseismic system can effectively capture the blasting and microseismic signals during construction. The microseismic activity is closely related to the intensity of field blasting disturbance. The potential risk areas of rockburst are the upstream side arch shoulder and the intersection between lower drainage corridor and workshop installation room. The research results can provide technical support for later excavation and support of underground powerhouse caverns of Huanggou Hydropower Station.

To recommend the excavation procedures and design parameters for underground powerhouses, excavation procedures of fifty-one underground powerhouses in China were summarized and analyzed based on in situ stress conditions. Firstly, the complex stress environment in China was introduced and fifty-one underground powerhouses with their engineering scale, size, lithology, rock classification and in situ stress level were listed in detail. Subsequently, to evaluate the influence of in situ stress levels on excavation procedure design, the correlation between excavation procedures and in situ stress level in three main excavation zones were analyzed accordingly. Moreover, to provide the excavation design recommendations, the strength–stress ratio (SSR) was promoted to analyze and recommend the design parameters, and the blasting excavation design based on the stress transient unloading control was also supplemented. The results show that excavation procedures have different priorities under different in situ stress levels, and the design parameters show an obvious relationship with in situ stress levels. Moreover, the excavation procedure parameters are suggested to adjust accordingly under different SSR. The discussion of influencing factors and specification ensures its rationality and accuracy. It is believed that the summary and recommendations can provide a good reference for excavation procedure optimization of underground powerhouse under high in situ stress.

In the process of underground cavern excavation, the existence of the interlayer shear zones or large faults often makes the surrounding rock tend to be unstable or even deformed. Under the influence of interlayer shear zone C2, different degrees of deformation and failure occurred in many parts during the excavation of the Baihetan left bank underground powerhouse. Based on field monitoring and numerical calculation, this paper studies the deformation and failure characteristics of the rock mass with C2 in the whole excavation process and the failure mechanisms are analyzed. The results show that C2 has poor mechanical properties. In the process of excavation, it mainly induces two failure modes: rock collapse and shear deformation, which specifically leads to rock collapses, large deformation and shotcrete cracking in the main powerhouse, and shear deformation in the omnibus bar caves. In addition, the similarities and differences between this study and other studies on the deformation and failure of surrounding rock of underground powerhouse in recent years are discussed, and the relevant treatment measures for C2 are given. The above research results can be a reference for other related studies.
