The proposed work aims to acquire the maximum number of non-linear assemblies with closer assembly tolerance specifications by mating the different bins’ components. Before that, the components are classified based on the range of tolerance values and grouped into different bins. Further, the manufacturing process of the components is selected from the given and known alternative processes. It is incredibly tedious to obtain the best combinations of bins and the best process together. Hence, a novel approach using the combination of the univariate search method and the harmony search algorithm is proposed in this work. Overrunning clutch assembly is taken as an example. The components of overrunning clutch assembly are manufactured with a wide tolerance value using the best process selected from the given alternatives by the univariate search method. Further, the manufactured components are grouped into three to nine bins. A combination of the best bins is obtained for the various assembly specifications by implementing the harmony search algorithm. The efficacy of the proposed method is demonstrated by showing 24.9% of cost-savings while making overrunning clutch assembly compared with the existing method. The efficacy of the proposed method is demonstrated by showing 24.9% of cost-savings while making overrunning clutch assembly compared with the existing method. The results show that the contribution of the proposed novel methodology is legitimate in solving selective assembly problems.

Harmony search (HS) algorithm is a new population based algorithm, which imitates the phenomenon of musical improvisation process. Its own potential and shortage, one shortage is that it easily trapped into local optima. In this paper, a hybrid harmony search algorithm (HHS) is proposed based on the conception of swarm intelligence. HHS employed a local search method to replace the pitch adjusting operation, and designed an elitist preservation strategy to modify the selection operation. Experiment results demonstrated that the proposed method performs much better than the HS and its improved algorithms (IHS, GHS and NGHS).

The interest of those involved in hydroelectricity has been attracted by mini-hydro projects due to their minimal environmental impact and low installation cost. Besides, mini hydros can cooperate with an impressively wide extent of water-related infrastructure, offering a broad potential for investment. In the present chapter, the integrated solution of hydro implementation in water supply systems is presented. Thus, the benefits of a water-supply installation (with constant Q) are extended to energy production. However, defining the optimum operation of such a project is a complicated task, which may involve environmental, hydraulic, technical, and economical parameters. In the present chapter a novel approach is presented, the optimum management of mini hydros in a water supply system with the use of an optimization algorithm (i.e. Harmony Search Algorithm [HAS]). This approach is applied at a site in Northern Greece and is used as a case study of the present chapter.

This paper presents the development of a wrist rehabilitation system with a novel approach for structural design, based on the modeling of an optimization problem solved by a metaheuristic algorithm, Improved Harmony Search (ImHS). It is part of a project for developing low-cost rehabilitation systems expressly designed for the population of Latin American countries. A mixed optimization problem is modeled for the design, where the material type is associated with an integer variable and the dimensions of the components are continuous parameters. The novelty is that each element is calculated individually, but considering the combined effect over the structure. The optimization works simultaneously on both the material selection and the meeting of the associated constraints, to guarantee that the system will not fail because of any load, neither it will be unsafe for the patients, since the operation will always be within the limits considered in the modeling. ImHS is a variant of the Harmony Search algorithm, modified to enhance the exploration and exploitation processes. It is a simple yet powerful metaheuristic, implemented in this development with additional modifications to handle constraints and mixed variables. The proposed approach produced quality results, indicating that ImHS can be applied to solve complex engineering problems, facilitating the manufacture and control processes.
