In order to develop a new ceramic tool material with self-repairing capability, Al2O3/TiC/TiB2 ceramic tool material was prepared by vacuum hot-pressure sintering method. The toughening and strengthening mechanism of TiB2 on Al2O3/TiC substrate was analyzed. The results show that the ceramic tool material has good comprehensive mechanical properties when the TiB2 content is 10 vol.%. Its flexural strength was 701.32 MPa, hardness was 18.3 GPa, and fracture toughness was 6.2 MPa·m1/2, which were improved by 11.6%, 2.2% and 16.1% respectively, compared with the Al2O3/TiC tool material. Fracture surfaces of the Al2O3/TiC/TiB2 ceramic tool material were characterized by SEM, EDS and XRD. The results showed that the fracture mode was a mixture of transgranular fracture and intergranular fracture. The growth of Al2O3 and TiC grains can be effectively inhibited by adding appropriate amount of TiB2, and the internal grains of the material can be refined. The TiB2 has a uniform distribution in the matrix and acts as a diffusion toughening agent. The cutting performance of Al2O3/TiC/10 vol.%TiB2 tool material was further investigated. Experiments conducted on tools made of Al2O3/TiC and Al2O3/TiC/TiB2 materials showed that the main forms of wear for both tools were abrasive wear and bonded wear. The friction coefficient of Al2O3/TiC/TiB2 tools was reduced by 10.77% compared to Al2O3/TiC tools.

A new nanomicro composite self-lubricating ceramic tool material was prepared with vacuum hot pressing technique. The effect of nanoAl2O3 powders on the microstructure and mechanical properties of nanomicro composite self-lubricating ceramic tool material was investigated. With the increase of nanoAl2O3 content, the hardness and fracture toughness first up then down. When the nanoAl2O3 content is 4 vol.%, the flexural strength, hardness and fracture toughness reaches 562 MPa, 8.46 MPa·m1/2 and 18.95 GPa, respectively. The microstructure and mechanical property of nanomicro composite self-lubricating ceramic tool material can be improved by the grain refinement strengthening of nanoAl2O3.

Based on the microstructure results of Monte Carlo simulation, a three-dimensional grid model is built up, and imported into the finite element software with C++ language to analyze the mechanical properties of ceramic tool material. The stress field and residual stress of single-phase and multiphase ceramics have been analyzed by the computer simulation technology.

Ti(C, N) based ceramic tool materials in the Ti (C0.7N0.3)-(Ni-Co)-Cr3C2-VC system have been made by hot-pressing technology, their mechanical properties and fracture morphologies have been studied under three different fabrication conditions. The results show that the mechanical properties are significantly influenced by fabrication conditions, and the main fracture mode is intergranular fracture.

The new thought for designing the multi-phase and multi-scale nanocomposites was proposed to improve the comprehensive mechanical properties. Multi-phase and multi-scale particles are added to the matrix, and one of the additives is nano-scale particle, thus the comprehensive mechanical properties can be improved by the synergic effects of micro-scale toughening, nano-scale strengthening and mutual benefit between multi-phases. The ideal microstructure of multi-phase and multi-scale nanocomposites was designed. With this microstructure, the trans/intergranular fracture modes can be formed, which will consume more fracture energy during the crack propagation, therefore, both the flexural strength and fracture toughness can be improved. An advanced ceramic tool material has been fabricated based on this new thought.
