Lithium-ion batteries have found various modern applications due to their high energy density, long cycle life, and low self-discharge. However, increased use of these batteries has been accompanied by an increase in safety concerns, such as spontaneous fires or explosions due to impact or indentation. Mechanical damage to a battery cell is often enough reason to discard it. However, if an Electric Vehicle is involved in a crash, there is no means to visually inspect all the cells inside a pack, sometimes consisting of thousands of cells. Furthermore, there is no documented report on how mechanical damage may change the electrical response of a cell, which in turn can be used to detect damaged cells by the battery management system (BMS). In this research, we investigated the effects of mechanical deformation on electrical responses of Lithium-ion cells to understand what parameters in electrical response can be used to detect damage where cells cannot be visually inspected. We used charge-discharge cycling data, capacity fade measurement, and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) in combination with advanced modeling techniques. Our results indicate that many cell parameters may remain unchanged under moderate indentation, which makes detection of a damaged cell a challenging task for the battery pack and BMS designers.

Nowadays, Lithium-ion batteries are as the most preferable technology for consumer electronics. They found their way also to electric vehicles or even satellites, mainly due to their high energy density and long life. In the applications, the batteries require a battery management system for safe and optimal operation. Often, state estimation functionalities (as state-of-charge or state-of-health) require a running battery model. Therefore, an electrical circuit model (ECM) that accurately captures a battery behavior in suitable complexity is needed. This paper presents a three steps parametrization technique of ECM for Lithium-ion batteries based on laboratory experiments. Furthermore, an analysis of SOC and temperature dependence of battery parameters has been conducted. The developed ECM is validated, and its accuracy is evaluated by Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Maximal Absolute Error (MaE).

The electrical Vehicle (EV) is already on the roadmap of each necessary automaker and is seen because the answer to a a lot of property transport system, contributive to a discount of the gas Emissions. the utilization of inexperienced energy is turning into {increasingly progressively more and a lot of} more necessary in today’s world. Therefore, electrical vehicles are presently the most effective alternative for the setting in terms of public and private transportation. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in electric vehicles, bec ause of their high energy density. Sadly, lithium-ion batteries are unsafe unless they are run in the Safety Operation space (SOA). Therefore, A battery management system (BMS) should be employed in each metal particle battery, particularly for those employed in electrical vehicles. Thus, it plays a very important role in coming up with the safer electrical Vehicles.

As electric vehicle market growing fast, lithium ion batteries demand is increasing rapidly. Sufficient battery materials supplies including cathode, anode, electrolyte, additives, et al. are required accordingly. Although layered cathode is welcome in high energy density batteries, it is challenging to balance the high energy density and safety beside cost. As consequence, olivine phosphate cathode is coming to the stage center again along with battery technology development. It is important and necessary to revisit the olivine phosphate cathode to understand and support the development of electric vehicles utilized lithium ion batteries. In addition, blend cathode is a good strategy to tailor and balance cathode property and performance. In this chapter, blend cathode using olivine phosphate cathode will be discussed as well as olivine phosphate cathode.
