A simple general synthesis of 1-aryl-6-azaisocytosine-5-carbonitriles 4 is described. This method is based on coupling diazonium salts with cyanoacetylcyanamide 2 and then cyclization of the formed 2-arylhydrazono-2-cyanoacetylcyanamides 3. The 6-azaisocytosines 4 were studied with respect to tautomeric equilibrium and the transformation of functional groups, and used in the synthesis of the condensed heterocyclic compounds: Purine isosteric imidazo[2,1-c]-[1,2,4]triazine 8 and the 1,2,4-triazino[2,3-a]quinazolines 9–12.

A new chemoselective method for the synthesis of 2-aryl-1,3-oxazoles by deoxygenation of the corresponding N-oxides has been developed. As the deoxygenation reagent, a previously unknown complex of collidine with phosphorus trichloride in a 2:1 ratio has been used. The developed method enabled the preparation of a wide range of 2-aryl-1,3-oxazoles comprising various functional groups in good yields. The advantage of this reagent is its tolerance to nitro, methyl, hydroxyl, formyl, and acetyl groups, and double bonds. Due to chemoselectivity and availability of reagents, the method may be used for deoxygenation of N-oxides of other heterocyclic compounds (thiazole, pyridine, quinoline, etc.).

A new class of heterocyclic compounds, namely the benzoazepinoindolones, has been synthesised through a base-catalysed cyclisation reaction of 1,4-bis(2-aminophenyl)-2-phenylbutane-1,4-dione derivatives and features the prominent seven-membered azepine ring moiety. This synthesis has considerable scope for the rapid generation of more complex structures and is inexpensive and generally applicable.

In general, heterocyclic compounds have evoked interest and concern because of their fundamental role in biological profiles and biological actions in nature. Now, most of the lead molecules in medicinal chemistry are based on hetero-atoms. In medicinal chemistry- to bring two hetero-atoms to the drug molecule, isoxazoles are interesting functional groups. Isoxazole as a key building block has been widely used and is an important heterocyclic unit.
