Building maintenance is closely related to the performance and sustainability of buildings. However, existing approaches to maintenance are limited in terms of estimating required repairs. Therefore, this study proposes a case-based reasoning (CBR)-based model for estimating the time when the first repair will be needed after the completion of construction, even in phases where maintenance-related information is scarce. CBR and fuzzy-analytic hierarchy process (AHP) were employed as research methodologies. A database was established by collecting 257 cases related to maintenance of apartment buildings, and attributes were extracted through literature reviews and expert interviews. Then, attributes were weighted by fuzzy-AHP and case similarities were computed by measuring the Euclidean distance. Similar cases were retrieved based on similarity scores. The model was validated via a comparison of 20 randomly selected test cases with the output of retrieved cases. The results showed that the average case similarities of 3-, 5-, 7-, and 10-nearest neighbors (NN) were 98.05%, 97.86%, 97.73%, and 97.59%, respectively, and mean absolute percentage errors for 3-, 5-, 7-, and 10-NN were mostly lower than 20%, confirming the applicability of the proposed model. The proposed method will help in the preliminary estimation of the repair time of building components.

Cost estimating of highway projects with high accuracy at the early stage of project development is crucial for planning and feasibility studies. Various research have been attempted to develop cost prediction models in the early stage of a construction life cycle. This study uses the hybrid estimating tool to provide an effective cost data management for highway projects and accordingly develops a realistic cost estimating system. This study focused on the development of a more accurate estimate technique for highway projects in South Korea at the early stage using hybrid analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and case-based reasoning (CBR). Real case studies are used to demonstrate and validate the benefits of the proposed approach. It is expected that the developed CBR system is to provide decision-makers with accurate cost information to asses and compare multiple alternatives for obtaining the optimal solution and controlling cost.

Abstract For complex and difficult geology, it is difficult to design right cutters for TBM in the conventional ways. So the successful experiences and data accumulated are very useful in TBM disc cutters design. CBR is a reasoning methodology that exploits similar experienced solutions, in the form of past cases, to solve new problems. This paper proposes an AHP-Based CBR model that overcomes the difficulty of measuring experience for determining the relative weight of attributes by the analytic hierarchy process. By comparing, the model using the analytic hierarchy process was more accurate, reliable, and explanatory for solving new problems using experience from previous cases.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a model not only for determining the key factors in selecting optimal international express suppliers, but also for extracting the priority strategic suggestions of management for international express suppliers. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed model comprises two parts. The first part identifies suitable criteria for evaluating international express supplier by reviewing studies from 1989 to 2009, after which the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied to determine the relative weights of the criteria. The second part adopts grey relational analysis to extract five priority managing strategies from which 16 strategies are developed based on three concern factors derived from the first part. Findings – The results show customers’ top three concerns when selecting international express companies. In addition, the results show the five priority strategic suggestions to international express suppliers. Research limitations/implications – The research has two major limitations. First, this study was conducted using a sample of companies operating in Taiwan. Thus, other countries such as Japan and South Korea should be examined in future research. Second, this study focuses on the application of fuzzy AHP techniques to identify key selection criteria and service strategies of international express suppliers. Other important aspects, such as performance evaluation and performance prediction in the selection of international express suppliers, were not involved in this study because of the limited research scope. Originality/value – The proposed model helps international express suppliers enhance their competitiveness and raise their customers’ satisfaction.

Selection of service providers in the global supply chains of today has been recognized as having a very important effect on the competitiveness of the entire supply chain. It results in achieving high quality end results (products and/or services), at reasonable cost coupled with high customer satisfaction. This article discusses the use of Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) to effectively manage the qualitative and quantitative decision factors which are involved in the selection of providers of 3PL services under Lead Logistics Provider (LLP) environments of today. Lead logistics providers (LLP) are increasingly being banked upon to integrate the best of 3PL service providers and allow for synchronized and optimized operations. In the asset free environments of today, many a times, the LLP uses the services of the 3PL and hence the issue of reliably choosing them assumes increasingly greater significance. The fuzzy-AHP has been adequately demonstrated in literature to be an effective tool which can be used to factor-in the fuzziness of data. Triangular Fuzzy Numbers (TFN) have been deployed to make over the linguistic comparisons of criteria, sub-criteria and the alternatives. The FAHP based model formulated in this chapter is applied to a case study in the Indian context using data from three leading LSPs with significant operating leverages in the province of Uttrakhand (India). The proposed model can provide the guidelines and directions for the decision makers to effectively select their global service providers in the present day competitive logistics markets.

The conceptual design of products is an important stage in the design process. However, how to reuse the existing and successful parts is always the key factor to the success of products in the process. To match the case parts rapidly and accurately, this paper puts forward the case-based reasoning (CBR) technology based on functional mode, which expresses accurately the functional structure through the generalized positioning of parts in products. Also, the scheme of variable-length hierarchical coding of functional mode is proposed, and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is adopted to determine matching function. Then, based on the hierarchy retrieval mode, the accurate matching of case parts is realized. The application of instance shows that the matching mode is feasible.

There are still many parents who do not have sufficient understanding in terms of toddler disease. One way to provide education is the availability of a system that can be used for consultation based on the symptoms of illness experienced by toddlers and the actions needed to overcome them. The system that will be built is an expert system that can relatively provide suggestions for solutions to children's health problems using the Case Based Reasoning (CBR) method. namely an expert system that uses case-based reasoning methods, namely looking for similarities of a disease compared to a disease that has existed before. In this study, the CBR method was combined with a weighting process using the pairwise comparison method which was within the scope of the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) method. In comparing consultations with old diseases that already exist in the system, and looking for similarities from the comparison results, the Sorensen similarity algorithm is used. This study resulted in weights with 3 symptom categories, namely mild symptoms with a weight of 0.09, moderate symptoms with a weight of 0.24 and severe symptoms with a weight of 0.67 and will recommend several diseases with a similarity above 0.5 and diseases with a similarity below 0.5 will be entered into the revise table to find a solution.
