In recent years, a large amount of emulsified oily wastewaters were produced from petroleum and food industries, resulting in severe environmental problems. In this study, a series of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were prepared via one-step solvothermal method by introducing various amounts or types of PVP. The synthesized MNPs were characterized by multiple techniques, and their demulsification performances were evaluated in petrochemical and vegetable oil wastewaters, respectively. Results showed that the introduction of PVP in solvothermal process could significantly enhance the demulsification efficiency of MNPs, although excessive addition of PVP could not further increase its efficiency. Moreover, the effects of pH, surfactant concentration of wastewater, and the recycle number of MNPs on the demulsification performance were investigated in detail. It was found that the demulsification efficiency decreased with the increase of pH and surfactant concentration, and the synthetic MNPs were still effective after being reused for 5 cycles under acidic and neutral conditions. It is expected that the development of the PVP-coated MNPs can provide a simple and powerful route for the oily wastewater treatment.

Fe3O4 hollow microspheres with good dispersibility and high saturation magnetization were synthesized through a facile one-step solvothermal method. The formation mechanism of the hollow structure was studied by taking time-dependent experiments. Porous [Formula: see text]-FeOOH and [Formula: see text]-Fe2O3 nanosheets were firstly fabricated. Fe3O4 solid spheres aggregated by small particles were obtained from the transition of [Formula: see text]-FeOOH and [Formula: see text]-Fe2O3. Finally, the solid sphere is transferred to hollow sphere through Ostwald ripening. The maximum saturation magnetization of the hollow spheres is [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]emu/g, which is higher than some results reported in references. The Fe3O4 hollow spheres show potential applications in microwave absorption and photocatalysis.

Hyperbranched polyglycerol-coated magnetic nanoparticles (SHPG-MNPs) were functionalized with succinate groups to form a draw solute for use in a forward osmosis (FO). After the one-step synthesis of hyperbranched polyglycerol-coated magnetic nanoparticles (HPG-MNPs), the polyglycerol groups on the surfaces of the HPG-MNPs were functionalized with succinic anhydride moieties. The resulting SHPG-MNPs showed no change of size and magnetic property compared with HPGMNPs and displayed excellent dispersibility in water up to the concentration of 400 g/L. SHPG-MNPs solution showed higher osmotic pressure than that of HPG-MNPs solution due to the presence of surface carboxyl groups in SHPG-MNPs and could draw water from a feed solution across an FO membrane without any reverse draw solute leakage during FO process. Moreover, the water flux remained nearly constant over several SHPG-MNP darw solute regeneration cycles applied to the ultrafiltration (UF) process. The SHPG-MNPs demonstrate strong potential for use as a draw solute in FO processes.
