This report summarises Australian passive surveillance data for adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) for 2017 reported to the Therapeutic Goods Administration and describes reporting trends over the 18-year period 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2017. There were 3,878 AEFI records for vaccines administered in 2017; an annual AEFI reporting rate of 15.8 per 100,000 population. There was a 12% increase in the overall AEFI reporting rate in 2017 compared with 2016. This increase in reported adverse events in 2017 compared to the previous year was likely due to the introduction of the zoster vaccine (Zostavax®) provided free for people aged 70–79 years under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and also the state- and territory-based meningococcal ACWY conjugate vaccination programs. AEFI reporting rates for most other individual vaccines in 2017 were similar to 2016. The most commonly reported reactions were injection site reaction (34%), pyrexia (17%), rash (15%), vomiting (8%) and pain (7%). The majority of AEFI reports (88%) described non-serious events. Two deaths were reported that were determined to have a causal relationship with vaccination; they occurred in immunocompromised people contraindicated to receive the vaccines.

Abstract This paper evaluates the effect on crime of creating a fundamental modern-day institution: centralized professional police forces tasked with preventing crime. We study the 1829 formation of the London Metropolitan Police – the first professional force worldwide. Using newly digitized and geocoded crime and police data together with difference-in-differences and pre-post designs, we find evidence of a significant reduction in violent crimes (despite the possibility of off-setting increases in clearance and reporting rates). In contrast, a reduction in property crime is not visible

Objective: The Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University (OGHFU) in Shanghai is the largest academic women's hospital in China. Between 2009 and 2014, the use of liquid-based cytology (LBC) significantly increased while gradually adopting the Bethesda System (TBS), and in 2012 local regulations mandated that pathologists replace technicians to sign out Pap tests. Design: A retrospective OGHFU database search documented all Pap test reports between 2009 and 2014 by specimen type, either LBC or conventional Pap smears (CPS), and final reporting category. A total of 1,224,785 Pap reports were analyzed to document variations in Pap test reporting during a period of major change in cervical screening in China. Results: LBC gradually replaced CPS, which declined from over 65% of Pap tests in 2010 to 6.4% in 2014. Of 514,811 Pap reports using the traditional class system, class I (negative) reports accounted for 98.3% of results. With the introduction of TBS reporting, pathologist reviews and substantial replacement of CPS by LBC, the laboratory abnormal Pap test rate increased significantly to almost 5%. Conclusions: Changes in cervical cytology reporting between 2009 and 2014 in China's largest academic women's hospital reflected both increased use of LBC and the introduction of pathologist TBS reporting. Abnormality rates increased significantly and fell within CAP benchmark ranges.

Using Mintzberg's managerial role model, this study examined the managerial role profiles of 63 intercollegiate athletic conference commissioners. Results showed that the subjects rated the disseminator role as most important, followed by the liaison, disturbance handler, monitor, leader, entrepreneur, spokesperson, figurehead, negotiator, and resource allocator role behaviors. Membership in NCAA divisions did not significantly affect these ratings.

BACKGROUND Few studies have investigated how to best measure adherence to smoking cessation medications, but continuous usage measures are recommended. OBJECTIVE In this first study of its kind, we compared methods for measuring adherence to nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), investigating the completeness and validity of data collected from daily assessments using a smartphone app versus data collected from retrospective questionnaires. METHODS Women aged ≥16, who were daily smokers <25 weeks pregnant, were offered cessation counselling and encouraged to use NRT. Women set quit dates (QD) and, for 28 days afterwards, were asked to report NRT use daily to a smartphone app and to questionnaires administered in-person or remotely at 7 and 28 days. For both data collection methods, we provided up to £25 in compensation for time taken providing research data. Data completeness and NRT use reported to app and questionnaires were compared. For each method, we also correlated mean daily nicotine doses reported within 7 days of QD with Day 7 saliva cotinine concentrations. RESULTS Of 438 women assessed for eligibility, 40 participated and 35 accepted NRT. More participants (31/35) submitted NRT usage data to the app by Day 28 (median days submitted=25 [IQR 11]) than completed the Day 28 questionnaire (24/35). Data submitted to the app showed a lower reported duration of NRT use compared to the questionnaire (median days NRT for app=24 [IQR 10.25]; questionnaire=28 [4.75], P=.007), and there appeared to be specific cases of overreporting to the questionnaire. Mean daily nicotine doses (mg) between QD and Day 7 were lower when calculated using app data (median mg for app=40 [52.1]; questionnaire=40 [63.1], P=.001), and some large outliers were evident for the questionnaire. Mean daily nicotine doses, adjusted for cigarettes smoked, were not associated with cotinine concentrations for either method (app r=0.184, P=.55; questionnaire r=0.031, P=.92). CONCLUSIONS Daily assessment of NRT use via a smartphone app facilitated more complete data (a higher response rate) than questionnaires, and reporting rates over 28 days were encouraging among pregnant women. Although data from neither method was significantly associated with cotinine concentrations, app data had better face validity; retrospective questionnaires appeared to overestimate NRT use for some.
