Active and inactive phorbol esters were applied to guinea pig ventricular myocytes to study the responses of L-type Ca2+ (ICa,L) and L-type Na+ (INa,L) currents. Phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) (10-100 rM) never stimulated ICa,L or INa,L and frequently depressed them by 5-30% in a voltage-independent manner. However, the phorbol ester consistently activated delayed-rectifying K+ (IK) and Cl- currents. The inhibition of ICa,L occurred approximately 3 times faster than comonitored stimulation of IK, and ICa,L and INa,L were unaffected by two interventions that suppressed IK stimulation [pretreatment with 50 microM 1-(5-isoquinolinesulfonyl)-2-methylpiperazine (H-7) and dialysis with pCa 11 versus standard pCa 9 solution]. Inactive phorbol esters 4 alpha-phorbol 12,13-didecanoate (alpha-PDD) and 4 alpha-phorbol had little effect on IK, but alpha-PDD had a PMA-like inhibitory effect on Ca2+ channel currents. We conclude that, unlike the stimulation of IK by PMA, inhibition of Ca2+ channel current by phorbol esters is a protein kinase C-independent action.

Greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the response of common lambsquarters to POST applications of halosulfuron–methyl plus 2,4-D admixtures and to investigate the effects of 2,4-D on the absorption, translocation, and metabolism of halosulfuron. In the greenhouse, halosulfuron at 0, 4.5, 9, 18, and 36 g ai/ha was applied alone and mixed with 2,4-D at 0, 17, 35, and 70 g ai/ha POST to 7.5- to 9-cm seedlings, and plant fresh weights were determined 4 wk after treatment (WAT). Halosulfuron alone did not control this weed, while fresh weights of common lambsquarters treated with 2,4-D declined hyperbolically as rates increased. A synergistic response for mixtures of these herbicides occurred, as observed fresh weights for all combinations were less than expected based on independent action and the calibrated marginal responses. In the laboratory, 7.5- to 9-cm seedlings were treated POST with commercially formulated halosulfuron at 9 and 18 g/ha and 2,4-D at 0, 70, and 140 g/ha, respectively, followed by foliar-applied14C-halosulfuron. Absorption of14C-halosulfuron increased with time, and absorption and translocation were not influenced by the addition of 2,4-D. Results from these studies inferred that halosulfuron and 2,4-D were generally synergistic on common lambsquarters and that mechanisms other than absorption, translocation, and metabolism may explain this response.

For the merits of high-order statistics and Riemannian geometry, covariance matrix has become a generic feature representation for action recognition. An independent action can be represented by an empirical statistics over all of its pose samples. Two major problems of covariance include the following: (1) it is prone to be singular so that actions fail to be represented properly, and (2) it is short of global action/pose-aware information so that expressive and discriminative power is limited. In this article, we propose a novel Bayesian covariance representation by a prior regularization method to solve the preceding problems. Specifically, covariance is viewed as a parametric maximum likelihood estimate of Gaussian distribution over local poses from an independent action. Then, a Global Informative Prior (GIP) is generated over global poses with sufficient statistics to regularize covariance. In this way, (1) singularity is greatly relieved due to sufficient statistics, (2) global pose information of GIP makes Bayesian covariance theoretically equivalent to a saliency weighting covariance over global action poses so that discriminative characteristics of actions can be represented more clearly. Experimental results show that our Bayesian covariance with GIP efficiently improves the performance of action recognition. In some databases, it outperforms the state-of-the-art variant methods that are based on kernels, temporal-order structures, and saliency weighting attentions, among others.

Perception of possibilities for behavior reflects the task-specific fit between action capabilities and environmental properties. We investigated whether this is so for a behavior that requires spontaneously and temporarily coordinating anatomical components and inert objects into a person-plus-object action system—stepping over an expanse with crutches. We found that perception of this affordance (a) scaled to an anthropometric property of primary relevance to performing this behavior (leg length), (b) reflected the ability to perform this behavior, and that (c) variability in perception decreased with practice perceiving this affordance. The results are consistent with the proposal that perceiving affordances for a given behavior requires assembling a task-specific perceptual instrument.

The main results of research on the impact of soil and insurance herbicides on weediness of crops for cultivation of soybean under different farming systems (industrial and no-till) are presented. It was established that the greatest efficiency of soil and insurance herbicides and the lowest level of contamination was marked in the application of tank mixes before sprouting and during the growing season and crops, which influences the crop soybeans. Pre-sowing weed synusia is effectively destroyed by total herbicides continuous action system of no-till.
