A new species, Encyonopsis indonesica, is described from the ancient lake Matano, Sulawesi island, Indonesia. The morphology of this species was studied by means of light and scanning electron microscopy. E. indonesica has a remarkable valve ultrastructure. The valve surface is ornamented with numerous longitudinal siliceous ribs and siliceous verrucae. Valve face delineated from the mantle by a thickened marginal ridge. Raised sterna border the raphe branches. Raphe is distinctly undulate with distal ends hooked strongly to the ventral side. The only similar species to E. indonesica is Amphora dissimilis described from New Caledonia. Comparison of both taxa is given and A. dissimilis is transferred to Encyonopsis. The taxonomic placement of both taxa is evaluated, and the phenomenon of external siliceous ornamentation is discussed.

During a survey of the diatom flora of the Adegoy River (Krasnodar Territory, Russia), an unknown Fragilaria species (Bacillariophyta) was found that could not be identified using the currently available literature and here we describe it as a new species. The morphology of Fragilaria irregularis sp. nov. was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy and compared to similar species including Fragilaria deformis, F. rinoi, F. septentrionalis and Fragilariforma bicapitata. It differed from these taxa in several characters. Most observed valves showed an irregular striation pattern, a feature not observed in other species. Other important differences include valve outline (linear with parallel margins) and stria density (7–14 in 10 µm, lower compared to all other species). The new taxon has a linear valve outline with parallel to weakly convex margins, subcapitate apices and a very irregular, coarse striation pattern.

Halamphora yundangensis sp. nov. is described as a new species epiphytic on the green seaweed Ulva lactuca, from Yundang Lake, Fujian Province, China. Morphological details of the new species with respect to shape, size and valve ultrastructure are presented, with observations based on light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The main features of Halamphora yundangensis are dorsiventral, semi-lanceolate valves with convex dorsal margin and straight ventral margin, as well as valve ends distinctly protracted and capitate. Externally, a prominent marginal ridge forming the image of a broad hyaline area is present. Internally, dorsal striae are regularly biseriate, and a row of areolae lies along raphe. The new species is compared with similar species in both Amphora and Halamphora.

A new species, Gomphosinica selincuoensis sp. nov., is described from Lake Selincuo, North Tibet, China. This taxon is clearly different from the other species in genus Gomphosinica, with a distinctly protracted, rostrate headpole, relatively higher striae density, and distinctive areolae arrangement within the striae. Striae have areolae mostly in 3 rows, but there are places near the central portion of the valve and at footpole where there are only 2 rows of areolae per stria. Characteristics of this taxon, as observed in light and scanning electron microscopy, support its systematic placement in the genus Gomphosinica. This new species is compared with similar species in Gomphosinica from China and North America, and the biogeographic distribution of the genus is discussed.

A new species of Scissurella d’Orbigny, 1824 from the Azores is described and compared to similar species from the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean areas: Sinezona cingulata (O.G. Costa, 1861), Scissurella costata d’Orbigny, 1824, Sin. semicostata Burnay & Rolán, 1990, Sci. lobini (Burnay & Rolán, 1990) as well as two representatives from the Caribbean, Sin. confusa Rolán & Luque, 1994 and Sci. redferni (Rolán, 1996). The description and comparisons are based on shell and radula morphology examined by scanning electron microscopy. The species that are considered here are described by features including: shell shape, shell sculpture, shape of teleoconch I, which begins after the protoconch and ends at the onset of the selenizone and teleoconch II which extends from the selenizone to the aperture, presence or absence of a slit or foramen, details of the umbilical region and protoconch sculpture and width. Scissurella azorensis n. sp. is characterized by the protoconch sculpture, which contains axial cords on the outer margins only, having a open umbilicus region, teleoconch I being greater then one whorl and the amount of strong axial cords over the entire shell. The distributional range for Sin. semicostata is extended to the Salvage Islands. Sinezona fayalensis (Dautzenberg, 1889), Sin. depressa (Watson, 1897) and Sin. crossei (Folin, 1869) are compared to Sin. cingulata to show synonymy.

A new small-celled species of the genus Euastrum is described from Piyavochnoe Mire (Vologda Region, European Russia). The species was studied by light and scanning electron microscopy. This species refers to the group of Cosmarium-like species of Euastrum. This taxon is also compared to the other morphologically similar species.

AbstractA new species of parasitic nematode, Ascarophis (Similascarophis) richeri sp. nov. (Cystidicolidae), is described from the stomach of the marine scorpaeniform fish Hoplichthys citrinus Gilbert (Hoplichthyidae) (prevalence 19%, intensity 1–8 nematodes per fish) collected in the region of the Chesterfield Islands (Coral Sea, west of New Caledonia) in October 2005. The new species, studied using both light and scanning electron microscopy, is characterized mainly by the structure of the mouth (highly reduced pseudolabia, high pseudolabial terminal projections, no submedian labia, well-developed, bilobed sublabia), bifurcate deirids, the length of the spicules (663–729 μm and 105–108 μm) and the presence of filaments on both egg poles (2–5 on each). Similascarophis Muñoz, González et George-Nascimento, 2004 is considered a subgenus of Ascarophis van Beneden, 1871 to accommodate the species characterized by highly reduced pseudolabia. Presence of the new species in fish from Seamount Nova (Lord Howe Rise) but not from the Chesterfield plateau suggests that it is endemic to this seamount, a case already encountered for many benthic invertebrates.

A new species of Cribraria, described herein as C. bicolor, appeared in moist chamber cultures on samples of the bark of Eucalyptus sp. collected at two localities in Australia. The morphology of representative specimens was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy, and micrographs of relevant morphological details of sporocarps and spores are provided. The species has a number of distinct and unique morphological features, including a glossy bright-violet globose sporotheca and a two-colored long stalk which is bright-red over the lower one-third and light yellow or lemon-yellow over the upper two-thirds. The combination of these characteristics as well as a shallow calyculus which is dark-violet when viewed under a dissecting microscope and bright red in transmitted light when mounted in lactophenol makes C. bicolor a well-defined morphospecies when compared to all other species of Cribraria. The stability of the taxonomic characters of the species was confirmed by an examination of a number of specimens.

A new species, Encyonema oblonga Liu & Xie, is collected during a survey of the freshwater diatom flora of Manghe River, Shanxi, China. The valves of this new species are oblong with rounded apices and have the features typical of Encyonema, including complex areolae. We compare the new species with the most similar taxa, E. leei, E. leei var. sinensis and E. appalachianum and consider that  E. leei var. sinensis is the valid name.  The morphology of E. oblonga is documented with light and scanning electron microscopy.

Lowland intermittent ponds, although biologically important, are poorly studied water habitats. During the analyses of the material taken from lowland pond in Pelagonia Valley, and Vitachevo, Republic of North Macedonia, the diatom Sellaphora pelagonica sp. nov. was recorded and described based on light and scanning electron microscopy. The species is characterized by a strictly linear valve outline with parallel to slightly concave margins and broadly rounded ends, 15.0–40.0 µm long and 5.0–7.0 µm wide. These features, together with raphe structure and areolar shape are compared with several similar taxa currently ascribed to Sellaphora.
