The freshwater shrimp species Caridina cucphuongensis (family Atyidae) was poorly described by Dang (1980). Moreover, the taxonomic status of this species is hard to verify as the types have been lost. This study provides a redescription of the species and designation of a neotype specimen. The Caridina cucphuongensis Dang, 1980 is characterized by short rostrum with large teeth on the dorsal margin, long stylocerite, subrectangular endopod of male first pleopod, and short appendix interna of the male second pleopod.

Abstract A new species of Eusiridae, Eusirus liui sp. nov. is described from a hydrothermal vent on Okinawa Trough, North-West Pacific. The new species differs from the other 30 congeneric species mainly by the following combination of characters: the acute rostrum reaching to 1/3 the length of peduncular article 1 of antenna 1; the absence of eyes; pleonite 3 without acute protrusion on dorsal margin, and the posterior margin of epimeron 3 with 18 serrations. A key to all known Eusirus species is provided herein. This is the fourth species within the Eusiridae that has been found from vent fields.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) improves the quality of life for patients with brain-gut disorders, however, the underlying mechanisms of CBT remain to be explored. Previously we showed that environmental enrichment (EE), an experimental paradigm that mirrors positive behavioral intervention, ameliorates chronic stress-induced visceral hypersensitivity in a rodent model via mechanisms involving altered activity in the central nucleus of amygdala (CeA). In the present study, we investigated whether microglia-mediated synaptic plasticity in the CeA is a potential mechanism underlying the protective effects of EE against stress-induced visceral hypersensitivity. We sterotaxically implanted corticosterone (CORT) micropellets onto the dorsal margin of the CeA shown previously to induce colonic hypersensitivity. Animals were housed in EE cages or standard cages for 14 days following CORT implantation. Visceral sensitivity was assessed via visceromotor behavioral response to colorectal distension. Microglial morphology, microglia-mediated synaptic engulfment and the expression of synaptic pruning-related signals C1q, C3 and C3R were measured using immunofluorescence and RNAscope assay. We found that housing CORT implanted rats in EE cages for 14 days attenuated visceral hypersensitivity in both male and female rats as compared to control rats maintained in standard housing. EE reduced CORT-induced microglial remodeling and microglia-mediated synaptic pruning with reduced C1q and CR3, but not C3, expression. Our data suggest that exposure to EE is sufficient to ameliorate stress-induced visceral pain via reducing amygdala microglia-modulated neuronal plasticity.

Abstract The fossil record of Early Triassic diapsids is very important to understand how the end-Permian mass extinction affected ecosystems and the patterns and processes involved in the subsequent biotic recovery. Vertebrate fossil assemblages of continental deposits in current-day South Africa, China, and Russia are the best source of information of this clade during the aftermath of the extinction event. Although considerably less sampled, the Induan continental rocks of the Panchet Formation of the Damodar Basin (eastern India) have also yielded a relatively diverse vertebrate assemblage composed of fishes, temnospondyls, synapsids, and a single proterosuchid taxon. Here, we report on a small isolated diapsid partial ilium (ISIR 1132) from the upper Panchet Formation. This specimen has a distinct morphology compared to other tetrapods that we know, including a shallow emargination on the dorsal margin of the anterior portion of the iliac blade, and ratio between height of iliac blade versus maximum height of iliac acetabulum at level of the dorsalmost extension of supraacetabular crest ≤0.45. Comparisons and a quantitative phylogenetic analysis found ISIR 1132 as a non-archosauromorph neodiapsid. This new specimen expands the reptile diversity in the Panchet Formation as well as for the rest of Gondwana, where Early Triassic non-archosauromorph neodiapsid species are extremely scarce.

Abstract Introduction/Objective Glomus bodies reside in the stratum reticularis of the dermis as well as in visceral organs. Their functions involve temperature and blood pressure regulation. The incidence of glomus tumors is approximately 1.5%, occur more frequently in women, and generally manifest during the third to fifth decade of life. A majority of glomus tumors are diagnosed by biopsy and excision. At least 19 case reports exist in the literature where glomus tumors are diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration (FNA). We add to this growing literature by discussing a case report involving the cytologic findings of an FNA-diagnosed glomus tumor. Methods/Case Report A 66-year-old female presented with left second toe pain for 41 years but worsening in the past several months. Physical exam revealed 5/5 muscle strength in her toes without loss of sensation. There was no edema, erythema, nor ecchymosis. Pain was notably out of proportion when palpating her second nailbed. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with contrast was performed revealing a 1.1 x 1.0 x 0.9 cm circumscribed, ovoid mass involving the dorsal aspect of the second toe distal phalanx along its dorsal margin (Figure 1). The patient underwent fine needle aspiration and biopsy. Cytologic findings included clusters of uniform cells with round to oval nuclei and scant cytoplasm. There was spindling of cells noted in some of the clusters. Cells were surrounded by thick wisps of magenta colored myxoid material reminiscent of a pleomorphic adenoma (Figure 2). Biopsy showed uniform cells surrounding capillaries. Immunohistochemistry performed on the biopsy showed that lesional cells were positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin (SMA). A diagnosis of glomus tumor was made. Amputation was performed with clear margins. Results (if a Case Study enter NA) NA Conclusion Glomus tumor is a rare tumor that is usually diagnosed on biopsy; however, it has distinct cytologic features that can aid in its diagnosis on fine needle aspirations.

A new Old World genus in the tribe Trogaspidiini Bischoff, 1920, Arkaditillagen. nov., is described based on male morphology. Six species are recognized in this genus: A. bagrada (Cameron, 1902), comb. nov. (Indonesia, Malaysia), A. depressicornis (Mickel, 1935), comb. nov. (Malaysia), A. frimsp. nov. (Malaysia), A. gibbasp. nov. (Indonesia), A. lelejisp. nov. (Indonesia), and A. nallinia (Zavattari, 1914), comb. nov. (Indonesia). The species of this new genus were formerly placed in the genus Krombeinidia Lelej, 1996, but they are differentiated from it and other genera by having a unique set of morphological character states, such as the mandible inner margin expanded, forming subbasal tooth; the paramere antero-ventrally serrate; and the digitus dorsal margin lamellate. A key to species of Arkaditilla is provided.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the distribution and severity of bone and soft tissue lesions in the proximal metacarpal region of warmblood horses in lame and control groups. Correlation between lesions and ability to return to work was evaluated in the lame group.Methods: This restrospective analysis evaluated 62 horses with MRI examination of the proximal metacarpal region between Sept 2015 and Feb 2021. There were 36 lame limbs and 26 control limbs. The control group included seven contralateral limbs.Results: Proximal suspensory ligament (PSL) size was not different between the lame and control groups. Hyperintensity seen on T1W/T2*W GRE images within the dorsal collagenous part of the PSL and hyperintense Short-TI Inversion Recovery (STIR) signal within the dorsal collagenous part of the PSL or within the McIII were only present within the lame group. Palmar cortical McIII resorption and dorsal margin irregularity of the PSL and McIII sclerosis were more severe within the lame limbs, but mild gradations were also seen in control limbs. Intermediate gradings for a subset of lesions were commonly seen in the non-lame contralateral to lame limbs. Return to work in the lame group is not statistically different for any measured observation(s), and 19/33 of the lame horses returned to work at similar or higher levels.Conclusion and clinical importance: Fifty-eight percent in this group of warmblood horses returned to work within a variable time frame. The majority (81%) of lame limbs showed bone and soft tissue abnormalities, but no enlargement of the PSL was noted in lame horses, and no correlation was seen between the severity or type of lesions and the ability to return to work. The presence of STIR hyperintensity within the proximal McIII or dorsal collagenous part of the PSL and hyperintensity within the dorsal collagenous part of the PSL on T1W GRE and T2*W GRE images, as well as significant palmar cortical McIII resorption are considered clinically relevant lesions. Contralateral limbs may not truly represent the normal condition, showing nonclinical variations and adaptive remodeling.

The genus Habetia Kirby, 1906 previously known from only four species or subspecies is revised based on unidentified specimens found in museum collections. H. multispinulosa Griffini, 1908 is given full species status, while H. pictifrons Karny, 1911 is removed from Habetia based on male and female characters and becomes the type species of the new genus Parahabetia gen. nov. Sixteen new species are described in Habetia, and one new species and two new subspecies in Parahabetia. The most significant characters for the differentiation of species of Habetia are male tenth abdominal tergite, cerci, subgenital plate, and male internal genitalia with the titillators that basically form a pair of roughly U-shaped sclerites that vary between species from simple, curved sclerites to modified structures with additional sclerotized branches and the sclerites can be connected with septa to form complex shapes. In contrast, males of Parahabetia have elongate titillators provided at end with a crest. In the larger species of Habetia the stridulatory file on the underside of the male left tegmen has a step in pre-apical area that is missing in the smaller species; one species with a weak step is intermediate between both groups. Unique modifications of single species in Habetia are an apical dorsal extension of the male subgenital plate in H. imitatrix Karny, 1912 and a hardened phallus sheath between phallus and subgenital plate in H. tuta sp. nov. Females of Habetia have straight ovipositors that vary in length and in the shape of the dorsal margin between species. Females can also be differentiated by species specific modifications of the subgenital plate. In Parahabetia the ovipositor is rather short and curved similar to the condition in the genus Philmontis Willemse, 1966 but has the apical area slightly recurved. Keys to the species of both genera are provided. Habetia species have been found throughout New Guinea except so far for Papua Barat; although they were mainly found in the North and the East. Parahabetia species are currently only known from the East of New Guinea. The following species and subspecies are described as new: Habetia bivittata sp. nov., H. curvata sp. nov., H. dentata sp. nov., H. elevata sp. nov., H. kondiu sp. nov., H. lalibu sp. nov., H. nigricauda sp. nov., H. pallida sp. nov., H. pedala sp. nov., H. pilleata sp. nov., H. pinnigera sp. nov., H. quatrispina sp. nov., H. simbai sp. nov., H. sororcula sp. nov., H. tuta sp. nov., H. wau sp. nov., Parahabetia bispinosa sp. nov., P. pictifrons obtusa ssp. nov., P. pictifrons acuta ssp. nov.

A new burnetiamorph therapsid, Isengops luangwensis, gen. et sp. nov., is described on the basis of a partial skull from the upper Madumabisa Mudstone Formation of the Luangwa Basin of northeastern Zambia. Isengops is diagnosed by reduced palatal dentition, a ridge-like palatine-pterygoid boss, a palatal exposure of the jugal that extends far anteriorly, a tall trigonal pyramid-shaped supraorbital boss, and a recess along the dorsal margin of the lateral temporal fenestra. The upper Madumabisa Mudstone Formation was deposited in a rift basin with lithofacies characterized by unchannelized flow, periods of subaerial desiccation and non-deposition, and pedogenesis, and can be biostratigraphically tied to the upper Cistecephalus Assemblage Zone of South Africa, suggesting a Wuchiapingian age. Isengops is the second burnetiamorph recognized from Zambia and is part of a tetrapod assemblage remarkably similar to others across southern Pangea during the Wuchiapingian. A revised cladistic analysis of Biarmosuchia yielded over 500 most parsimonious trees that generally reaffirm the results of previous analyses for burnetiamorphs: Lemurosaurus is basal, Lobalopex and Isengops are proximate burnetiid outgroups, and Bullacephalus, Burnetia, Mobaceras, Niuksenitia, and Pachydectes are burnetiines. Furthermore, Russian biarmosuchians are scattered throughout the tree and do not form sister taxon relationships with each other. Burnetiamorphs display a wide disparity of cranial adornments and are relatively speciose (13 species), especially when compared to the number of specimens discovered to date (∼16 specimens). As has been suggested in some other tetrapod clades (e.g., ceratopsian dinosaurs), the burnetiamorph fossil record supports an inferred macroevolutionary relationship between cranial adornment and increased speciation rate.

During a survey of freshwater diatoms from Mojiang River, Chebaling Nature Preserve in Shaoguan City, Shixing County, Guangdong Province, China, a new Encyonema species, Encyonema chebalingense sp. nov., was discovered. Based on observations with light and scanning electron microscopy, a detailed morphological description of E. chebalingense is here presented. The main features of E. chebalingense include: conspicuously asymmetrical and dorsiventral, semielliptical to semielliptical–lanceolate valves, with a filiform raphe; dorsal margin clearly arched and ventral margin nearly straight or slightly concave; central area on the ventral side formed by 1–2 shorter central striae; and short tectullae projecting within the striae. The new species was compared with some similar species, all of which show similarities to E. chebalingense but differ in features such as dimensions, internal valve structure, stria density and valve shape. This genus is common and abundant in relatively clean waters, and other new species most likely will be recorded in the future from China.
