A collection of chewing lice was studied from the Natural History Museum of the Universidade Católica de Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Twenty three samples from 16 bird species were examined. Included therein was a new species of the genus Plegadiphilus Bedford, 1939 which is described, illustrated and compared to P. cayennensis Emerson & Price, 1969. An updated list of chewing lice species recorded from birds of that state is presented.

The lice of the Oxylipeurus-complex parasitising the turkey, Meleagris gallopavo, belong to a previously undescribed genus. In this paper, we describe this genus as Valimia new genus, redescribe two of its species: Lipeurus polytrapezius Burmeister, 1838 and Oxylipeurus corpulentus Clay, 1938, and describe the new species Valimia necopinata, discovered during our examination of samples of the two known species. This occurrence represents the first record of three congeneric species of chewing lice parasitising the same host individual.

Amyrsidea Ewing, 1927 is a genus of chewing lice comprising 52 species, divided into five subgenera: Amyrsidea sensu stricto, Argimenopon Eichler, 1947, Cracimenopon Carriker, 1954, Desumenopon Carriker, 1954 and Numidimenopon Scharf & Price, 1977 (see Price et al. 2003: 86), which parasitise a wide range of hosts belonging to the avian order Galliformes (see Price et al. 2003: 321). Species of Amyrsidea can be distinguished from species of Menacanthus Neumann, 1912—the other menoponid genus with species parasitic on the same hosts—by lacking ventral spinous processes in the head (Scharf & Price 1977: 815). Revisions of all subgenera and species of Amyrsidea, including keys for their identification, were published by Scharf & Price (1977, 1983) and Scharf & Emerson (1983, 1984).

The following three species of parrots: Enicognathus leptorhynchus (King) (Choroy = Slender-billed Parakeet), E. ferrugineus (-Müller) (Cachaña = Austral Parakeet) and Cyanoliseus patagonus (Vieillot) (Tricahue or Barranquero Parrot = Burrowing Parrot) from Southern Chile and Argentina were examined for chewing lice. Four louse species were found: Psittacobrossus patagoni Price and Beer and Heteromenopon macrurum (Eichler) ex the Austral Parakeet, Paragoniocotes meridionalis Guimarães, H. macrurum and P. patagoni ex the Burrowing Parrot, and H. macrurum and a new species of Paragoniocotes Cummings ex the Slender-billed Parakeet and the Austral Parakeet. P. meriodionalis is a new record for Chilean fauna, and E. leptorhynchus is a new host for H. macrurum. Paragoniocotes enicognathidis n. sp. is described and illustrated, discussing the morphological affinities with its close relatives.

AbstractSeven species of chewing lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) were found on six species of passerine birds (Passeriformes) in northern Vietnam. A description and illustrations of Brueelia alophoixi sp. nov. ex Alophoixus pallidus (Pycnonotidae) are given. New host records are: Abroscopus superciliaris (Sylviidae) for Myrsidea sp.; and Orthotomus sutorius (Sylviidae) and Lonchura striata (Estrildidae) for Brueelia spp.

The chewing lice of the genus Philopterus parasitic on drongos (Dicruridae) are reviewed. Both sexes of the two species previously known from dicrurid hosts—P. trabecula (Piaget, 1880) and P. kalkalichi Ansari, 1955—are redescribed and illustrated. A new species, Philopterus petrescuae Adam is described from Dicrurus hottentottus from Indonesia. A lectotype for P. trabecula is designated. A record of Philopterus crassipes (Burmeister, 1838) from Dicrurus remifer (Temminck) is discussed and considered to be the result of straggling or contamination.

The purpose of this study was to record the species of chewing lice parasitising Gyps bengalensis (Gmelin, 1788), the white-rumped vulture, in Pithauli, Nawalparasi District, Nepal, from February to June 2017. Three louse species were identified: Cuculiphilus (Aegypiphilus) gypsis (Eichler, 1944), Colpocephalum sp., and the new species Aegypoecus bengalensis, described herein.
