This chapter studies a wiki project that electronically links English students learning Business Chinese in the UK and Chinese students learning Business English in China. The focus is placed upon enhancing English/Chinese language skills and intercultural communication competence. Students’ messages on the wiki illustrate that cultural values and cultural competence are important parts of business communication. The results of a questionnaire survey and a focus group interview indicate that the interaction between language learners and native speakers not only helped students improve each other’s language, but also allowed them to understand the business norms and behaviours in another culture. The chapter concludes with a proposal that wikis can be a platform for enhancing language output and intercultural communication competence, if well designed and monitored.

The Relationship

This article discusses about the relationship between linguistic competence and intercultural communication competence, and then about the functions of English language teaching in improving students’ intercultural communication competence. Finally, it explores how to develop English language learners’ intercultural communication competence in English language teaching and gives some useful suggestions, so as to really realize the final objective of English language teaching.

This paper conceptually discusses why it is essential to foster intercultural responsiveness through learning a language other than English (LOTE) and developing intercultural communication competence at Australian universities. Learning a LOTE is meaningful and helps second language learners develop social skills and cognitive competence, understand the linguistic system of the LOTEs, and sense differences between their home language/culture and target language/culture, and then pave the way to developing intercultural communication competence. However, a LOTE as a compulsory unit has little presence in Australian university curricula. No Australian universities require that students need to learn a LOTE to meet the course requirements. Learning a LOTE is conducive to both bilingual/multilingual and intercultural communication competence development. Furthermore, most current work studies intercultural verbal communication competence more than intercultural nonverbal communication competence. While intercultural verbal communication is audio-oriented, voiced, and externalized with open messages, intercultural nonverbal communication is visually oriented, silent, and internalized with hidden cues. Only when both components are considered can people achieve effective intercultural communication. The implications for learning a LOTE and developing intercultural communication competence are discussed.

Abstract. The study mainly explores the main characteristics, existing problems and corresponding solutions of Sino-foreign cooperative education in cultivating intercultural communication talents. It adopts exploratory analysis and case studies through data collected principally from QMUL Engineering School, NPU and Glasgow College, UESTC. It is found that students in Sino-foreign cooperative education have strong intercultural communication competence since they have: 1) a good master of foreign language; 2) more opportunities to communicate and exchange with foreigners; 3) strong acceptance towards multi-cultures; 4) strong initiative and practical-ness to work or study abroad. However, problems and challenges exist, such as poor language output, superficial intercultural communication and unstable intercultural communicative approach. It is suggested to adopt diversified assessment modes, create an intercultural communicative environment and build an intercultural assistant mechanism to comprehensively promote the cultivation of intercultural communication talents in Sino-foreign cooperative education.
