The purpose of this paper is to study the benefits of building information modelling (BIM) and determine the barriers to achieving these benefits. The use of BIM is not yet at a level where known benefits can be realised. This study consists of a literature review of the benefits of BIM and an empirical review, where focus group interviews were used to discover barriers. The major benefits of BIM include cost savings, better information flow, shorter project timelines and better quality. The greatest barrier is the lack of practical guidelines for BIM implementation in projects. Successful BIM implementation requires technology, people and processes to be in proper shape. Earlier studies identify the theoretical requirements of BIM implementation, but practical solutions are still not at an adequate level.

Purpose This paper aims to develop a framework for optimising building performance through the integration between risk management (RM) and building information modelling (BIM) during the design process. Design/methodology/approach To achieve this aim, a research strategy consisting of literature review, case studies and survey questionnaire is designed to accomplish four objectives. First, to examine the concepts of design process, building performance, RM and BIM; second, to present three case studies to explain the role of using RM and BIM capabilities towards optimising building performance; third, to investigate the perception and application of architectural design firms in Egypt towards the role of RM and BIM for enhancing building performance during the design process; and finally, to develop a framework integrating RM and BIM during the design process as an approach for optimising building performance. Findings Through literature review, the research identified 18 risks that hamper optimising building performance during the design process. In addition, 11 building performance values and 20 BIM technologies were defined. Results of data analysis showed that “Design budget overrun”, “Lack of considering life cycle cost” and “Inefficient use of the design time” were ranked the highest risks that affect the optimisation of building performance. Respondents ranked “Risk avoid” or “Risk transfer” as the most risk responses adopted in the Egyptian context. In addition, “BIM As Built” was ranked the highest BIM technology used for overcoming risks during the design process. These findings necessitated taking action towards developing a framework to optimising building performance. Originality/value The research identified the risks that affect optimising building performance during the design process. It focuses on improving the design process through using the capabilities of BIM technologies towards overcoming these risks during the design process. The proposed framework which integrates RM and BIM represents a synthesis that is novel and creative in thought and adds value to the knowledge in a manner that has not previously occurred.

With more than 80% of all construction projects overrunning their budget, there is a need for more efficient management of the estimated 10% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that is expended annually on construction across the world. It has been proposed that better information and data management through Building Information Modelling (BIM) will lead to cost savings and greater predictability. Notwithstanding the role of quantity surveyors (QS) in modelling and managing construction cost, they remain among the least capable of assimilating BIM into their existing traditional processes. Despite the increasing need for BIM capability assessments for projects, there remains, no tool specifically developed for assessing QS firm’s BIM utilisation capacity or performance. As a result, it is unclear the attributes that indicate BIM capability of QS firms as well as QS practices on projects. This study sought to address this through a review of BIM capability assessment frameworks in order to ascertain their suitability for QS practices. An expert focus group discussion was then used to identify peculiar attributes suitable for QS BIM capability assessment as a precursor to the development of a comprehensive model of QS BIM capability maturity. Findings reveal that most QS BIM capability attributes relate to processes including criteria for effective information definition and data management such that they are consistent with QS measurement standards. The BIM competence of staff also emerged as one of the key attributes highlighting the need for QSs to improve their knowledge, skills and experience in the application of BIM amidst current low levels of adoption. The proposed attributes would assist the development of performance and maturity indicators that would help QS firms better understand their own capability as well as the requirements for delivering costing services through BIM on projects.

Focus groups are becoming increasingly popular in research, especially in parent and child research. Focus group interviews allow participants to tell their own stories, express their opinions, and even draw pictures without having to adhere to a strict sequence of questions. This method is very suitable for collecting data from children, youths, and parents. However, focus group interviews must be carefully planned and conducted. The literature on focus group interviews with adult participants is extensive, but there are no current summaries of the most important issues to consider when conducting focus group interviews with children, youths, or parents. This article outlines the use of focus groups in child, youth, and parent research and the important factors to be considered when planning, conducting, and analyzing focus groups with children, youths, or parents.

This study begins with a broad literature review to understand the Building Information Modelling (BIM) concept. Quantity Surveyors star as an influential role as qualified, trained, and proficient in dealing with glitches relating to construction expenditure, supervision, and consultation in the construction industry. When the task is getting crucial, an assistant from technology may help faster and smoother the process and task. This study aims to investigate an understanding of the application of BIM among Quantity Surveyor in Malaysia. According to the Board of Quantity Surveyors, Malaysia's official website, 101 registered Quantity Surveying Consultant firms were in 2018. This study targeted 1000 persons from different firms and expected to respond from at least 278 persons due to time constraints. The other criteria of the respondents include years of experience in the industry. Quantity Surveying Consultant firms would be the most suitable people to answer a questionnaire survey for this study. The registered Quantity Surveying Consultant firms are very well proficient in the quantity surveying practice and services. Therefore, by choosing Quantity Surveying Consultant firms to be the respondent may help in getting the most consistent answer and higher accuracy of the exploration of Quantity Surveyors productivity by adopting the Building Information Modelling (BIM) concept in Quantity Surveyor, which will further enhance the awareness of benefits of BIM to the Quantity Surveyor profession itself.

Rehabilitation exercise is effective for improving the health of persons with physical disabilities. However, there are limited studies on their perception of exercise equipment use. The purpose of this study was to investigate the subjectivity to understand the types of perceptions of individuals with physical disabilities regarding the use of exercise equipment in South Korea. This study used Q-methodology. A literature review and focus group interviews with individuals with physical disabilities were conducted to construct Q-Population. Q-statements were selected from the Q-population, after which Q-sorting was executed by P-sample. The results indicated 4 perception types: (1) “Independent user,” (2) “Practical user,” (3) “Motivational user,” and (4) “Convenience user.” Recommendations were provided for developing exercise equipment for use by individuals with physical disabilities. This study revealed 4 perception categories and the findings have strong potential to contribute to the development of proper services and the effective utilization of exercise equipment for individuals with physical disabilities.

Abstract Background: This study is aimed at developing a framework for the evaluation of healthcare data’s value, so as to provide a tool for data managers in making decisions on data openness.Methods: In this study, the Delphi method was adopted. Firstly, a rudimentary framework was constructed following a literature review and focus group interviews, and an inquiry letter was designed. After handing out the inquiry letters to experts in related areas, the framework was modified according to the feedbacks. This process was repeated until a consensus was reached.Results: For this inquiry 15 experts were invited; whose levels of activeness and authority were relatively high. This research produced a framework for the evaluation of healthcare data with 2 primary criteria, 7 secondary criteria and 21 tertiary criteria, after two rounds in Delphi method.Conclusion: The framework established in this research lays a solid foundation for the identifying and evaluation of healthcare data’s value, and is expected to drive the process of opening of valuable healthcare data.

Over the past decade, the fields of civil engineering, i.e., structural engineering, have increasingly used the building information modelling (BIM) approach in both professional practice and as the focus of research. However, the field of structural engineering, which can be seen as a sub-discipline of civil engineering, misses, as far as the authors are aware, a real state-of-the-art on the use of BIM in this regard. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to start bridging that gap. In particular, the authors have conducted a traditional literature review on the utilisation of BIM in structural engineering, enabling them to perform a detailed content analysis of publications. The qualitative investigation of the literature that the authors have conducted has highlighted six main BIM uses in structural engineering: (1) structural analyses; (2) production of shop drawings; (3) optimized structural design, early identification of constructability issues, and a comparison of different structural solutions; (4) seismic risk assessments; (5) existing-condition modelling and retrofitting of structures; and (6) structural health monitoring. Each of these is discussed in relation to their reference workflows; use of information models; information exchanges; and main limitations. In the conclusions, the authors identify current gaps in knowledge, as well as likely developments and improvements in the utilization of BIM in structural engineering. The authors also outline the possible significance of this work more broadly.
