Semantic Location Modeling for Mobile Enterprises

A location model represents the inclusive objects and their relationships in a space, and helps engender the values of location based services (LBS). Nevertheless, LBS for enterprise decision support are rare due to the common use of static location models. This chapter presents for enterprises a framework of dynamic semantic location modeling that is novel at three-fold: (1) Profoundly bring into the enterprise business models the location models. (2) With a novel method of dynamic semantic location modeling, enterprises effectively recognize the needs of the clients and the partners scattering in different locations, advancing existing business relationships by exerting appropriate service strategies through their mobile workforces. (3) Through the Location Model Platform of information sharing, enterprises are empowered to discover the potential business partners and predict the values of their cooperation, gaining competitive advantages when appropriate partnership deals are made by enterprise mobile workforces. This proposed framework has been implemented with the J2EE technology and attained the positive evidences of its claimed values.

The enhanced capabilities of mobile handsets are starting to include activities previously associated with traditional desktop computing capabilities. This extends the mobile handset from being used for connectivity to a range of purposes in both consumer and intelligent networks. This chapter examines the development of mobile service applications from current consumer telecommunication applications including context based services (such as location based services) to mobile internet-based services and the forthcoming applications for intelligent networks. Developments of both consumer and industry services in sectors with complex operations are examined in terms of service interactions by reviewing the adoption factors and the provision of services in terms of service characteristics and business models. This chapter develops conceptual frameworks for better understanding mobile services and mobile use in the context of intelligent networks along with emerging consumer applications.

The emerging world of mobile commerce is characterized by a multiplicity of exciting new technologies, applications, and services. Among the most promising ones will be the ability to identify the exact geographical location of a mobile user at any time. This ability opens the door to a new world of innovative services, which are commonly referred to as Mobile Location Services (MLS). This chapter aims at exploring the fascinating world of MLS, identifying the most pertinent issues that will determine its future potential, and laying down the foundation of a new field of research and practice. The contribution of our analysis is encapsulated into a novel classification of mobile location services that can serve both as an analytical toolkit and an actionable framework that systemizes our understanding of MLS applications, underlying technologies, business models, and pricing schemes.

This research proposes a novel method of measuring the dynamics of semantic relatedness. Research on semantic relatedness has a long history in the fields of computational linguistics, psychology, computer science, as well as information systems. Computing semantic relatedness has played a critical role in various situations, such as data integration and keyword recommendation. Many researchers have tried to propose more sophisticated techniques to measure semantic relatedness. However, little research has considered the change of semantic relatedness with the flow of time and occurrence of events. The authors' proposed method is validated by actual corpus data collected from a particular context over a specific period of time. They test the feasibility of our proposed method by constructing semantic networks by using the corpus collected during a different period of time. The experiment results show that our method can detect and manage the changes in semantic relatedness between concepts. Based on the results, the authors discuss the need for a dynamic semantic relatedness paradigm.

With dynamic growth and acceptance of mobile devices, many innovative business applications are beginning to emerge. Tracking and tracing seems to be one of the popular applications which many organisations have initiated, often facilitated by location based services provided by mobile network operators. However, there are many issues associated with the provisioning of this application with current technologies and business models. Small and Medium-size Enterprises (SMEs) that make up a significant segment of businesses worldwide do not yet seem able to benefit widely from these services. In this chapter, we initially review current technologies/ applications and the issues associated with them, drawing from research and the experiences of a long term ongoing action research project with SMEs in the trade sector. Subsequently, we explore the opportunities offered by 3G services/business applications to SMEs, and provide a broad critical outlook on future opportunities for SMEs to benefit from 3G services.
