Waste Management in the Philippines

In response to the growing problems on waste management in the country, the Philippines' Republic Act 9003 (RA 9003), also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, was enacted in January 26, 2001. This chapter hopes to provide the brief background of the country particularly on the issues related to waste management such as population, economic situation, urbanization, and modernization, among others. It will also discuss the definition, classification, and generation of waste both in urban and rural areas. In addition, it will also review the existing policies and the current waste management practices, and the lessons learned based on case studies of both successful and failed experiences. Furthermore, this will also provide the latest updates on the compliance of the local government units to RA 9003, identify the challenges, opportunities, and the proposed recommendations on how the waste management in the country can possibly be improved and become more sustainable.

The study aims to determine the following: (1) solid waste management practices of the people in Boracay Island prior to the advent of the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) Program; (2) types of waste were generated in the island; (3) changes occurred after the MRF; (4) problems encountered in the implementation of the program and what measures have been done to solve the problem; (5)lessons learned by the local government units in the implementation of the program.

Indiscriminate disposal of solid waste pollutes the environment and poses a health risk to the public. This study therefore examined the attitude and pattern of solid waste management practices among the residents of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government area, Lagos State. The study employed a descriptive cross-sectional design. A Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 600 respondents for the study. A validated semi-structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics were conducted to give statistical responses to the research questions and hypotheses using SPSS version 23. The mean age of respondents was 38.28±12.48years. More than half (51%) of the respondents were male. Majority (91%) of the respondents had positive attitude towards solid waste management. More (61.8%) of the respondents’ reported that they had waste bins in their houses. Less than half 247(41.2%) of the respondents did not separate their wet and dry waste before they disposal. Few (15.8%) of the respondents’ burned their waste. There is a significant relationship between resident’s attitude (r =0.14, p=0.00) and their solid waste disposal practice. Most of the respondents had a positive attitude towards proper waste management and poor practice of solid waste management. It is recommended that the government through the federal and state ministries of Health and Environment should create awareness via seminars, radio, televisions, and social media to teach best practices in waste management.

Rapid urbanization and uncontrolled population growth in the city of Akure create a huge generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) and waste management authority has not been able to manage it properly. This has led to inefficient waste collection methods, insufficient coverage of the collection system and improper disposal of solid waste. This paper investigated municipal solid waste management practices in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. Simple random sampling was used in selecting 392 respondents within the eight districts in the study area. Information was collected on socio-economic characteristics of the respondents; nature and compositions of municipal solid waste and solid waste management practices in the study area. The study showed that female respondents (58.2%) were more than male (41.8%) in the study area. Also, a larger proportion of the respondents earned above N40,000 per month. More than one-third of the respondents (37.8%) created squander from vegetable and food remains, next to this were plastic (19.1%), paper (8.2%) and metal waste (6.6%). Further findings showed that the majority of the respondents (66%) do not segregate waste before disposal while the wastebasket was commonly preferred to collect waste due to its affordability. The study concluded that despite the establishment of waste management authority, most of the wastes collected was not sorted before disposal while the majority of the respondents preferred to burn their waste. The study recommended that government and non-governmental organizations should pay much attention to the issue of waste management in the area as waste was not properly managed.

The population growth, changing consumption patterns, and rapid urbanization contribute significantly to the growing volumes of solid waste that are generated in urban settings. As the rate of urbanization increases, demand on the services of solid waste management increases. The rapid urban growth in Langkawi Island, Malaysia, combined with the increasing rates of solid waste production has provided evidence that the traditional solid waste management practices, particularly the methods of waste collection and disposal, are inefficient and quite nonsustainable. Accordingly, municipal managers and planners in Langkawi need to look for and adopt a model for solid waste management that emphasizes an efficient and sustainable management of solid wastes in Langkawi Island. This study presents the current practices of solid waste management in Langkawi Island, describes the composition of the solid waste generated in that area, and presents views of local residents and tourist on issues related to solid waste management like the aesthetic value of the island environment. The most important issue of this paper is that it is the first time that integrated solid waste management is investigated in the Langkawi Island.
